Hitchens is obviously relying on debating tactics rather than moral consistency to define his position. He often resorts to generalizations that beg-the-question at hand as a way of bolstering his own weak spots or undermining his opponents positions. His style can only be described as 'slimy'. He quickly abandons digressions that shove him into a corner and aligns himself with the oppostion in attempts to reverse the significance of their own points against them. He lacks a moral core, which is evident from the overly deccadent verbage of his own self-righteousness. It seems that his reliance on morally-vacuous sophistry and elusive self-obfuscation has become his hallmark rather than sincere ethical integrity. Also, his attempts at sounding tough have become intensely comical ( ala W. F. Buckley ) when most of the time he sounds like an upper-class english snob that would like to slap you if only it didn't risk dirtying his gloves. To end on a positive note, you can learn alot about debating tactics from him that are useful when you find yourself defending a position that you don't believe in.

Freedom is a God-given right to every human being and you are correct, tyranny is its opposite. THat is why Jesus came, he is the only one who can free us from the tyrany of this world. Apart from him there is no freedom. Other may claim to offer freedom but, no matter what they call it, it sill falls short of true freedom. Do you know why?

I do refuse to be fooled by the propaganda of fundamental Islamic radicalism. Likewise, I am not fooled by the propaganda of the Western Democracies that label their cause as "Freedom." Neither side is in control of history, neither side is sovereign, and neither side is the carries of freedom and justice. Only God is, thus I will place my faith in the way of God, the way of God's kingdom, the way of the cross and resurrection, the way of true life -- not the way of two wannabe kingdoms fighting each other for the right to the illusion of the throne.

If you are saying that most of the American opposition to the war in Iraq has little to do with ethical concerns or compassionate concerns towards innocent by-standards in Iraq, I think I would have to agree with you. In my observation, it seems most of the opposition is because Americans see the war as a waste of tax payers money and a needless sacrifice of American military.

However, I maintain that Christians (pacifist or just-war) should be in opposition to this war on the grounds that there is no justification based on the general consensus of what constitutes a just-war in Christian ethics. I also maintain, that if the US government is REALLY concerned about global justice (rather than self) then when the war is done, our government will spend the same amount of time, money, and military man power in the 3rd world building adequate irrigation systems, productive farms, housing, providing free medical treatment, etc...

The question is, would Americans really approve such a plan? That might just show how compassionate Americans really are - or are not.

I sometimes get ribbed for not being descriptive enough when I Digg something or Tag it in Del.icio.us, so FYI, the special "The War Within" takes a look at British Muslims from extremist radicals to moderates. It also highlights the problem of young men being recruited by radicals.
