When my sister and I went for a weekend we included the Louve, cos you kinda have to, but we staked out the key things we wanted to see and did a bit of a running tour to see them....totally crazy! But Paris outside was waiting!

A weekend is definitely tough to squeeze it all in, but wandering down the Champs Élyséesis also a bit of a must, just to get the feel of that iconic area. Plus the view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe is amazing...which will let you include the Eiffel in your photos of the city. Too obvious??

Getting up to the beautiful Sacre-Coeur, and then walking back through Montmartre is also something I would recommend after the last time I was there...but again, tricky to fit it all in!

If it's to be a museum and you're strapped for time, I think it basically comes down to a choice between the Italian masters at the Louvre (Denon wing 1st floor) and the Impressionist Gallery at D'Orsay (top floor). There's obviously a whole lot more to see at both museums, but just those sections will take up to a couple of hours, and I think they're probably the most 'complete' so to speak from an art history point of view. The Louvre is also currently showing Leonardo's Virgin & St Mary newly restored, which was pretty good. It's a shame the weekend won't be starting on a Friday night actually, because the Louvre is open till late and you can avoid the crowds that way.

Either way, it's worth doing some research first OR buy a guidebook at the museum (which is what I did). I'd say avoid the audioguides because they tend to take you all over the place (why have museums still not come up with thematic tours???)

Oops, sorry Amy! I will correct your age in my post.

Don't let me talk you out of going to the Louvre but maybe take a look at its website or a guide and pick what you really want to see as the place is huge and it also has a lot of antiquities, not just art.

If you are interested in art, I'm sure you'll really enjoy London too. All the main museums in London are free. I really like the Tate Britain, which has beautiful Turner paintings and Blake engravings and the Waterhouse painting of Our Lady of Shallott.

One of my favourite things to do in London is go to the theatre. Perhaps you'd like to see a Shakespeare performed in the replica of the Globe Theatre? It's very cheap to be a "groundling" where you stand in front of the stage like people did in Elizabethan times.

Another great hotel tip! Thank you Antonella.

There is something to be said for skipping the museums, though one of the girls is coming all the way from Australia and may not be back for a while. The Louvre is an all-day affair but I think a couple of hours at the Musee d'Orsay would be nice.

Good tips! Nothing wrong with touristy, especially for a first trip.

Truth to say I haven't been up the Eiffel Tower either but I have a plan for next time I'm in Paris, thanks to Wendy. :-)
