Jared, the area element has the href attribute, which is what search engines are parsing for when looking at the source code of a page, so those URLs will be found and crawled without problem. However search engines tend to weight more the anchor text of the <A> elements and pass that relevancy to the linked documents. If the pages linked with the area element are indexed, you don't necessarily need to change. I would also decide based on the number of area tags used within that map. Few - should be ok, a lot - I would change the layout to plain text with plain <A> tags. I hope it helps.

I have a client that changes a large image on their home page every month or so and currently uses areas. Would it be better to implement a more advanced layout with individual images for links instead of areas or is Google counting them the same?
