An argument I once made myself when I use to go to church as a child. In fact that just made sense to me at the time but the Lord opened my eyes to new things and showed me too through His word more of true His character. I thank God for that and Lar I thank you because you articulate it much better than I;)

Agree Jason great reminder. I don't notice it until someone challenges me on it. And the danger it is it is one of those "little things" we can do and no one will ever call us on it since it is masked with such a wonderful truth. Thanks for the reminder.

Good reminder Lar. I was studying the life of William Carey, one of the pioneers in Protestant foreign missions, this week. While reading, I came across this quote from his sister about his early days as a reformed believer, and the prayers he would pray at the dinner table:

"Often have I felt my pride rise while he was engaged in prayer, at the mention of those words in Isaiah ’that all our righteousness was like filthy rags.’ I did not think he thought his so, but looked on me and the family as filthy, not himself and his party."

I was definitely challenged on the reading of this. I do not know what Carey's heart toward his family, who were more traditional Anglicans, truly was, but I know some of the places my flesh can take me while still espousing gospel.

I think the cure is clear - more gospel! :)

I agree we don't go to work to "convert people to Christ", God does all the converting but I would say in the whole design side I do think we are designed to be creatures that naturally boast. In my work place it is usually boasting in ourselves or in someone else weakness but when in Christ we are designed to boast in Him. If we are doing that the gospel will surely be shared at some point and thus the Lord uses His gospel to change hearts so in that way we do go to work to share all that the Lord has done. And in that I believe the Lord will be pleased. I know I need to boast more in my savior at my work place.

Larry,

Thanks for posting the Word. It accomplishes much in us through Christ!

Matt

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Larry,

If I had to name one truth God has taught me in the last few years that has had the greatest effect on my faith, it is this! It must all flow from the Gospel. We must each "preach nothing but Christ, and him crucified." Anything else we do may be helpful to someone or practical, but without the Gospel, it is no different than Oprah or Habitat for Humanity or the Knights of Columbus.

It is my hope that our church would point again and again to the Gospel, front the pulpit to the dining room table! "Redeeming love has been my theme and shall be till I die!"

Pastor Bob,

Okay, I'm breaking my self-made rule about not posting again. You have made a very good argument and, because I am concerned with obeying the whole counsel of God in this decision, I would like to see how you answer this question. I want to make an careful decision, and am not trying to win an argument.(Prov. 8:12) I honestly wish to consider your response to these questions:

Say I homeschool my daughter and, praise God, as a young teenager she repents, believes the Gospel, and is thus born again. Is there a certain age when this verse becomes applicable to her?

"And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”"

How am I, as a parent, to be sure that she is obeying the whole counsel of God? Where better for her to "make disciples" than with other teenagers than a public school? Why would Christ remind the disciples that "all authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me"? Why does he promise that "I am with you always"? Do you think the disciples were perhaps worried about personal safety or their own spiritual health? Should a parent, out of fear, prevent his child from fulfilling this command and claiming these promises? When the child has the Holy Spirit within her, is not God now her Father, protecting her as she fulfills her calling as a child of God?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

I withdrew from this conversation because early on, when it was perceived that I was favoring Christian education, there was an immediate implication that writing from such a position might be contributing to division in the Church. Not my intention then and not my intention now. I've raised four children and been involved in full-time Christian education related ministry for 26 years. Education is all about worldview building.

We should send our Christian children to an institution where we also send missionaries (i.e. campus ministries, young life, etc.) and expect them to be missionaries there too? If that's good logic, why not let the enemy train our soldiers before we send them to war against their teachers?

No Biblical mandate for believers educating their children according to God's commandments (which commandments are not taught in the government schools)? God's word is not to be added to other knowledge in worldview building. It should not be something we use at home to refute what children learn in school. It is to be the foundation for our worldview. That means Biblical Truth is the indispensable material that our worldview is built on. Without it, our Biblical worldview crumbles. Deut. 6, Matt. 7. Attempting to supplement what children learn in their schools with something else at home is like offering them two different foundations.
