I remember "Stone" well. My first visit was in 1964 at a TO in training (TOiT) doing a qualifying course, Auto ND, and dealing with the then new 4000 type selector (GEC SE50 selector). I remember the communal facilities and the canteen with the cornflakes. Also the spray they used on the sandwiches for supper, that kept them 'fresh' for days, or was it weeks.

I attended again 10 years later as a visiting AEE as a lecturer for an end of course item on 2nd line maintenance work. This visit got me in the staff area with the en-suite rooms etc. They were, in looking back happy days and there was much fun to be had. Fortunately for me it was only one week each time. I do not know how the lecturers lasted for months and years up there. I think it must have had an effect on them. The place was dire really.

One final point is that the pliers were pointed wiring pliers and the correct GPO ratebook description was "Pliers Wiring No. 1". The name 81's came from the National Telephone days (pre GPO) where tools were on a list commencing at 1. The 81st item on the NT standard list of tools was those wiring pliers. For some reason the description 81's stuck from all those years ago, about 1910. Goodness know why, and I wonder what 80's and 82's were. Picking up on the Heinz bit, was a tin opener called a 57's ??
