Dan,

This stuff is great! I have a question for you: why not take this method to its logical extreme? You're limiting yourself to pitches in the dirt, but why not divide the area the catcher covers into a number of zones, calculate the average passed ball/wild pitch rate for each zone... and then compare each catcher's WP/passed ball for each zone to the norm. This would make the stat very much like an UZR for catchers.

Would this be too much work? Most of the math for this should already be in place.

Is the cbp available as a regular stat? I have been talking about this exact stat for a year and believe the info needs to be seen by the general baseball public. It's a very meaningful metric for both runs allowed and the fear pitchers have in throwing balls near the dirt when runners are on (especially 3rd).

Hi Dan,

I don't know if the hardcoded username/password near the top of the pitchfxparser.py file might be causing you problem?

If that's not it, drop me an email and I'll see if I can help some more.

Thanks for making these scripts public!

After setting up the pitchfx database, I run the python script and get a 1049 error: unknown database 'pitchfx'. When I launch mysql and do "show databases;", pitchfx is there along with all the necessary tables.

And if I create a different connection to a different database with the MySQLdb call, it works fine (so the problem is not a bad host name or environmental variable, it seems).

Any ideas on what's going on here?
