On the music, I think having a gamelan troupe would be good BUT I don’t think that that has to mean compromising on the modern music…I mean this isn’t exactly sticking to the traditional approach so no harm kind of jazzing things up a bit if it isn’t too off the line. I too think that the song for the Sultan was a good piece of characterisation for THIS particular musical. Totally suited his frivolous, luxurious somewhat immature self.

I suppose Malaysians are over-excited cos they never got to see something like this in Asia before. Might be our obssession with all things bright and beautiful. Anyway, it might have been over rated but I think a BIT of the enthusiasm will work well for Asian theatre. It might just suprise what we can do one day (look at Singapore’s F1 attempt. spot on in my opinion)

Though, I have to agree that his emoting didn’t work out too well in Malay (though there were some commendable parts). But you know, he joined in less than 2 months before opening night which was not that smart a thing to do for a non-malay speaking actor.

I don’t know if what I have to say has much backing cos I’m just a fresh theatre graduate so I might be just spewing rubbish.
Nevertheless, I think all of the cast, including Stephen, deserve a pat on the back. It might not be world class and might be a long way to go but its a step. And it was good entertainment.
