There is no question that carbon emissions are all somehow related to energy and what takes the most energy is transportation. We need to head to an ecologiconomy model where carbon, plastic, water footprints are all mandatory components of “filing”, like finance.
It comes across as a major change of paradigm, but once we are there it will just feel normal. Lots of work ahead.

In reply to Jason Wicks. Thanks Jason for your comment. Water scarcity is a huge problem and efficiency, just like energy efficiency, is a huge part of the solution. Green finance is where the action will be as all these transformations will require money.

It answers perfectly and comprehensively your question. I have to say - much to my pleasure - that the general conclusion is aligned with my article. Solar and storage won't be enough to bring electricity back to Puerto Rico. Energy effiency will be needed, as wind and biogas will be too.

In reply to Demi Rasmussen. Hi Demi and thank you so much for your comment. I haven't found or calculated the potential for marine energies or offshore wind. Currently they are more expensive than solar and wind, which already have significant potential. You may find information on the global potential of marine (tidal and wave) energies here. Something I have not mentioned in the article: energy efficiency is KEY in the transition to a low carbon and resilient future. I hope this answer will satisfy you and look forward to reading you here again.
