Your body considers tattoo ink a foreign invader and will deal with it in two ways. In the deeper layers of the skin your body forms connective tissue to wrap around it, thus making the tattoo permanent. On the outer layers, however, it will simply expel the ink. The first couple of days after a tattoo will find that extra ink simply leaking out before it scabs over. Try to wear clothing you don't mind ruining for those first couple of days and keep a very thin layer of unscented lotion or whatever ointment your artist suggested. Oh, and keep it clean.

And the obvious matters of 'don't pick at the scabs, don't soak it, and don't rub it dry' still apply.

It will probably stain your shirt, but your tattoo is fine. Your body is creating plasma to try to heal the tattoo. Some ink does come with that, but not enough at all to mess with your tat.

and to add a note, it is going to peel. it will look like its peeling off... do not worry do not try to rub this or pick it off, let it fall off naturally. its only peeling a layer of skin, and this will not hurt the tattoo.

It is VERY true. My friend had gotten one and the artist said that she will have to return about 3-4 times before they can officially say it's a "finished tattoo"...

...and even that won't last. He said it won't last and will have to keep getting touched up. So it's up to you. You will have to keep going back and getting it redone.

If you get a tattoo on your lip you will have to get it touched up every six months due to all the acids in the liquid in your mouth.

Yes, it fades, but how quickly varies from person to person. Tattoos in the mouth never heal because it's always moist and you don't have to take care of it like a regular tattoo. When I got mine done, I payed $ 60 and it included a touch-up 2 weeks later. I can probably guarantee no tattoo place will do free touch ups after that, since they fade so quickly. I've had mine for almost 3 years now and it's almost completely in tact. Some fading, but not enough to get it redone yet.

Sometimes it just looks like it is fading but it is just healing. Give it time to finish healing and see what it looks like then. You will know if you need a touch-up after that.

I've been doing tattooing off and on for 35 years, and usually have had no such issues. However I recently purchased a brand of ink that I have had four failures of the skin to retain the ink- four different people, four different tats and the same failure to "take". one of the tattoos has disappeared completely, one has turned blotchy, one wouldn't take while doing the tattoo, the other faded- in short find out if your tattooer/artist has changed brands or some such- in my work I have refunded one, didn't charge for the failure to take and am reworking the others- your artist should be willing to make it right at no charge- if not find somebody else to repair the tattoo.
