Short, highly effective and inexpensive standardized treatment for MDT-TB

Tuberculosis is a major public health problem in Bangladesh as well as the MDR-TB. Bangladesh is a resource constrains country. MDR-TB treatment facilities are inadequate. A long ques for MDR-TB patients are seen each year; WHO recommended conventional treatment needs 18 months to 24 months to be completed.

Short, highly effective and inexpensive standardized treatment for MDT-TB requires only 9 (nine) months in some case few more months are necessary with modification of combination of second and first line drugs from conventional treatment.

The research results has shown that treatment outcome is as like as the treatment outcome of first line drugs (for the Tuberculosis). The result is encouraging and it definitely improves compliance of MDT-TB patients. The compliance of standardized MDR-TB drugs is a big issue due to its long duration. The short, highly effective and inexpensive standardized MDR-TB treatment will improve patient’s compliance. Thus a patient benefit is there.

TB STUDY GROUP (TSG) congratulates Armand Van Deun for his initiative to carry out such a research with short, highly effective and inexpensive standardized MDR-TB treatment.

TSG also congratulates him for receiving the Kochon prize for 2010.
Van Deon is a great friend of TB patients of Bangladesh. TSG sincerely appreciates his effort in the field of Tuberculosis.

Bedaquiline is an excellent drug for XDR TB cases. So it might be more potent for MDR TB cases. We need this drug to shorten MDR TB regimen.

Taken from Janssen's presentation at the FDA Anti-infective Advisory Committee Meeting on Nov. 28, Bedaquiline was tested with a 5-drug background regimen consisting of ethionamide, pyrazinamide, ofloxacin, kanamycin and terizidone/cycloserine. This background regimen could be adjusted due to drug sensitivity test results and side effects. Any switches in drugs were within the same drug class.

One of the objective of the Strategic Plan is to build capacity for new sites of clinical trials and it's very important. Involvement of high TB burden countries in this process will give opportunity to make real conclusions and recommendations. Hope, WGND will ensure to find good partners in countries. Sure, representatives from national TB programs will support clinical trials.

With kind regards,

The competetion itself is a very new innovation that encourages good ideas to be generated. I am very certain that people will continue innovating until TB is completely controlled.
