Wow, that looks really fantastic! Great job. As someone who loves vintage things, I really appreciate your not only finding a way to keep that original floor, but to make it look really fab. Wonderful!

Great advice with a wonderful analogy! I love BM's Imperial Gray. I've used in it many houses and it never fails to look amazing and 'work' despite the style of the house. Thanks for your great blog.

just because you paint one ceiling a color, doesn't mean you have to paint all of them. the only issue would be where the ceiling adjoins another space. if the kitchen is open to the family room, but is separated by trim or something - it's still fine to paint the ceiling in the kitchen. but there does need to be trim or a dropped opening (like an arch or something) to separate the ceilings in adjoining rooms. hope that helps!

yikes, that sounds pretty bad. but it's difficult to know exactly what you are dealing with without photos. i'd recommend you find a local architect/designer to come out and look at it before you have a contractor botch it up even worse. unfortunately, builders and even architects do that kind of stuff all the time - it's unbelievable!

I totally agree, Kristie!! The only problem in our area is that most (no, almost ALL) homes have texture on their drywall, and it's usually a heavy sprayed texture like heavy orange peel or Monterey. You'd have to refloat the areas in question, which adds to the expense and no longer makes it a DIY job. But I think you're absolutely right, it's so worth it!

I know what you mean, Lorie. This is the first time I have de-faced a book. Except I did cut out some pages from a paperback version of Twilight for decor at a themed vampire dinner party, but I'm not sure that counts! If it makes you feel any better, the book covers in the video were stained and a bit moldy, so they needed to go anyway. But if the colors are consistent, you could definitely use books with covers.
