Oh, while I'm at it, the total electricity cost for the machine, with gas water heater, 8 loads per week, is $11/year. Those are some efficient elves.

It takes a full hour for the little Bosch Elves to hand scrub all of the cottons. Btw, I think we had a Bosch at our apartment in Paris. Or a Miele. All the same. I don't think the French make fancy little washing machines.

Great idea! We'll look into that. Since we tend to have breakfast on the back porch anyway in the summer, we could move some of our breakfast items (jam, butter, cut up fruit) out there as well.

Mini or maxi?

A SMALL new refrigerator may be the entertaining solution. It probably would use less power and be good for storage of soda cans. Maybe on the back porch. I don't think they cost a lot and you would have shelf space. We almost bought one after last Thanksgiving.

Well, I can use the jigsaw to notch out a few shelves so they'll fit around where we have the hinges. That will lower some shelves and raise others to give us more appropriate heights. We do have a cordless jigsaw, you know.

Thanks for the tip. We started out at Home Depot, which is a lot closer to our house than Lowe's, and were disappointed by how incomplete and sloppy their cabinet hardware selection was. Multiple finishes were thrown together in the same bin in the same style, so we didn't feel comfortable picking out 25 bags for fear they wouldn't match. Lowe's was much better, but it did turn out that we were able to get the models we liked at Lowe's cheaper over the web in the end.

What really drove us to Lowe's was the faucet selection. Home Depot just didn't have good mid-range faucets. We probably could have done better on-line with the models we researched at Lowe's, but we were in a mood just to buy one and go.

The surprise for me is that 42" doesn't get us any more storage than 36" cabinets because we have the same number of shelves and some of that headroom simply can't be used.

When Mark says he worked in the garden, he understates the amount of work he did. I went out to water the tomatoes today and didn't really recognize the area he'd been working in. It went from overgrown and indecipherable to organized and controlled, while still looking natural. Great job Mark!

We were spoiled by the quick delivery of the cabinets. Now we're just on the previous schedule. My mother won't get to see the countertop, unfortunately.
