This tactic seems as self-serving as anything Palin did. I stopped taking her seriously after she tried to play the race card when she was still a Representative and had to eat her words with a public apology. I know quite a bit about her, since she was omnipresent in Atlanta when I lived there, and even watched a sympathetic documentary in which she took a prominent role. I think the real similarity they both have is an incredible narcissism that now has destroyed both of their political careers.
