Lovely one! And a good site! It inspired me to create a chart of Michelle Obama's portrait. Going to stitch it this weekend.

Dear Sarah,

With Obama chosen as captain of the ship, I'm writing a story for Friday Skateboard magazine (a Dutch mag - http://www.rackimaging.com), about Afro's on a board. Your illustration of Obama on a skateboard fits the story. Therefore, I would like to use it as a picture in it. However, I would like to know whether you´re cool with it, or if I have to look further. So, please let me know if you are ok with the use as mentioned in the story. If so, is it possible to supply me with a picture?

Kind regards,

Arthur Romijn, Holland

Great post. It's not the first time Shepard Fairey's been accused of this sort of thing. It's just that, although popular, his work hadn't hit the mainstream previously like it did with the Obama poster. I wonder what went on when Warhol appropriated the Campbell soup cans, or used images of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe in his artwork. I'm sure similar issues came up. It's funny though that Fairey always created or recycled imagery akin to old propaganda posters, and now what has become his most familiar image to those not familiar with his art, is a political poster, which, whether you were for or against Obama is still, by definition, propaganda.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda" rel="nofollow">Wikipedia entry for propaganda</a>
And for a bit of irony:
