I have only recently discovered Catdaddy, and found myself having the same difficulties in trying to pair it with something, or coming up with a cocktail. I have not given up, due to its incredible flavor and aroma. I've found that with this little gem, simple is better. Catdaddy and cream soda or root beer, basic and delicious. I came up with a cocktail using equal parts Catdaddy and Jameson, shaking them together, pouring over a generous amount of ice, topping it off with ginger ale. I was at a restaurant the other night, and they were making Catdaddy milkshakes shooters to go along side their pecan pie dessert. The shake was amazing, when you mix the Catdaddy with the vanilla ice cream it transforms into essentially frozen egg nog.

Wit, Wisdom & Whiskey Decanter,

Not at all! I lay out the reasons I relegate Vodka to a Gnostic Gospel are mostly the opposite of Tequila. Vodka does indeed go with everything. The problem is that it brings no real character to the party itself. Also, there is, nor should be, any great variety of character between Vodkas, so the artistry of combining the RIGHT brand of the chosen spirit with your other ingredients goes away.

Don't get me wrong. Brandy has it's own problems as a spirit in cocktails, but its vast tradition of great and varied products, and its history of being a base spirit since people started making cocktails at all is why I view it a "canonical" and Vodka as... almost.

The real point of course is to start an argument.

This may be blasphemous on my part, but in my home bar, vodka stands in the place of brandy. In my experience, it's much more versatile.

Jordan,
Of course, I've done other drinks with Tequila, too. I can be done, it just isn't quite the versatile spirit the others are. Look at D&C's menu. Four lime-based sours (hmmm) and four(?) vermouth-based concoctions. I've tried this kind of drink, and they can be very drinkable, but your margin for error is pretty slim if you ask me.
Regardless, compare the tequila section with the others on the D&C menu and you'll see how narrow its really is.

Genius bartenders can make just about anything work well. Witness the myriad ways they have come up with this decade to make Fernet sort of not evil incarnate. But for the average, even semi-sophisticated Joe, Tequila gets problematic fast when you move away from the limeosphere.

Four lime-based sours (hmmm) and four(?) vermouth-based concoctions. I’ve tried this kind of drink, and they can be very drinkable, but your margin for error is pretty slim if you ask me.
Regardless, compare the tequila section with the others on the D&C menu and you’ll see how narrow its really is.

Genius bartenders can make just about anything work well. Witness the myriad ways they have come up with this decade to make Fernet sort of not evil incarnate. But for the average, even semi-sophisticated Joe, Tequila gets problematic fast when you move away from the limeosphere.

I think you're taking your hyperbole about the mixability of tequila a bit too far. There are plenty of bars that make a broad variety of tequila-based cocktails, some to great effect. For instance, Death & Co:

Mayahuel:

And my own tiny addition, which was an adaptation of a nod to the Blood & Sand from Eleven Madison Park:

There IS a difference -- possibly only in MY head, though -- between slushy and frozen drinks.

(p.s. my word verification words were "usndoc" and "Gospel."

Dagreb,
While I neglected for narrative reasons to couch it this way, the whole slushie variant is what, with Gospel cocktails, I refer to as an Heresy. I do like Apocrypha though. I may, whenever I get around to re-writing these in full form, steal that idea for the "acceptable" variants to the Gospels.

Joe,
I'll grudgingly bow to you and simply say, "The Exception That Proves..."

Dagreb - Sorry! Years upon years of Jesuit schooling have given me this odd reflex.

Doug - In my defense, coupe-wise, the ones I got are hollow stemmed and, for reasons I cannot adequately fathom, I'm a sucker for hollow stemmed cocktailware.

After my first comment, I thunk and thunk and thunk, about your statement that all tequila cocktails are Margaritas of one form or another and I wanted you to expand on that in light of the Tequila Sunrise.

I'll hang up now and take my answer off the air.

Damn. Who'd have thought that I'd be beaten to the punch today in my ambition to use Deuterocanonical in my comment? (Likely it's best to stick with Gnostic Gospel and not try for some portmanteau of Apocrypha with cocktail...)

Good show Doug. When next someone asks me about tequila I will quote you:
If you take a sip and have to bite into a lime and lick salt just to survive the experience, it isn’t good enough tequila.

Indeed!

Cheers!
