Breathing exercises are something you can do any time, too - you don't have to be playing your horn to get better at it! I'm not doing more than an hour's practice every day at the moment, but I <em>do</em> do stuff like hold a pen with my lips while doing other work. I don’t think it’s so much to do with the number of years; it’s more the number of hours.
