I took the boyfriend and his children as well as my own daughter there on the Monday to look around the scarecrows and visit Wray Fair, I have to say I’ve never been so disappointed.

When my kids were little, we took them to the Scarecrow Festival almost every year and had a lovely time, the scarecrows were clever and witty and the fair fun but balanced with lots of slightly off the wall stands from people like the Middlewood Trust http://www.middlewood.org.uk/ and lots of traditional stalls run by the various groups around the village – it was a fair that felt very traditionally English.

This year, having not been for about 3 or 4 years, for various reasons, I couldn’t believe how it had changed. The scarecrows were tacky and seriously naff, many of them were last years scarecrows, comments from other people who had been felt the same, the fair was dominated by cheap tacky very expensive fairground rides, the food stands outrageously expensive (£2.50 for a very small portion of chips) and generally it had an air of desperation about it despite it being very busy.

The organisers need to take a long hard look at what they are doing, this was the first village to run a Scarecrow festival, it needs to continue to be the best

Great idea, though! I’m certain the local school kids were involved as so many gardens had wonderful scarecrows on display, and that’s brilliant, but we didn’t get the chance to see them other than in the car driving past. We’d have loved to see them up close but by the time we struggled just a short distance from the car my father felt humiliated, my mum was very upset and I was thinking how awful it was because of the disabled access being non-existent. The outrageous comments when I went back for the car were the bitter icing on a very shitty cake. Had they been apologetic, my views would have been very different – disappointed, yes, a little angry, maybe, that they should have advertised it honestly as not suitable for wheelchair users. But their comments were vicious, small-minded and prejudiced. Totally unacceptable and no excuse for them.

Outrageous. You had perfectly reasonable complaints; how dare people be so rude, thoughtless and cruel. They will be infirm one day (some of us earlier than others, as we both know). A little planning, testing of plans (how hard would it have been to test whether the ramp and car park actually worked, for example) and consultation should never be too much to ask.

Oddly enough I was on their site today as we are doing something about scarecrows in Home Farmer magazine. Think I’ll pass on that event now.
