Sadly, Xena died last week but she lived a good life and passed peacefully. Ex-batts don't live as long as many other breeds because of what the cages do to them and the absence of exercise, fresh air and natural light during their long incarceration. Our girls are on deep gravel now. Works well. Just disinfect the ground at night occasionally, then hose it away so it's gone by the next morning. You just don't notice the poop as much. Since planting grazing grasses, I've noticed a difference in our chicken yolks, even with feeding the girls organic layer mash. I empathize with your muck issues! Agree with others about pine bark chips to help manage the mud situation until later in the season; that's what I use. The stuff doesn't get as nasty as straw/hay does in the muck, and it's easier to take up later if you want to plant something. It's probably for the best that the ex-batts stay in the warmth of the boxes at night for now, if they're still growing in their feathers. Once all the feathers are in & it's warmer, maybe try placing them on the roost at night after they're asleep. They'll wake up on the roost, which may get it into their heads that it's okay. It may take a few days or even a week, but this may "train" them.
