This app solves a future issue for me.

Question...can the app control the TV's on/off, volume, & mute controls, the way a real TiVo remote can?

I'm with Marcus. I'm in Bermuda and can't get my hands on the damn application. I'm really getting tired of geographic restrictions limiting the value of my stuff. I can only use 1/2 the features of my Tivo, 1/2 the features of my Blackberry, and 1/2 the world's content-rich websites.

I agree that the inteface does look a little slow in the demo. I suspect that TiVo knows about this problem and that they will try and address this issue before the Premiere is actually released. I am a little concerned that the new UI seems to rely a lot on your Internet connection and that this could be a problem. I guess only time will tell....

The menu interface and search seem a little slower than I would expect. Are these demos of a beta release, or is what's shown expected to be analogous of the production hardware/software?

How about a pause or freeze feature on the Season Pass functionality so that when you go out of town and you don't want certain programs recorded you don't have to; 1) Delete each upcoming episode separately, and 2) you don't have to delete the season pass and then when you return home you don't have to re-enter the Season Pass for the show you wanted to pause/freeze. I think it's a pretty simple feature request.

"...seems pretty steep compared to some of the new Internet video boxes coming out these days, such as Boxee." Um...you do understand that Boxee is not a DVR correct? It does one thing...delivers programing via IP. The comparison ends there.

From http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10466113-1.html:
TiVo Premiere is the closest thing to the "one box" model to date: When considering an Apple TV or the upcoming Boxee Box, a common refrain from consumers is always, "If this thing was also a DVR, it'd be perfect!" Well, here's the thing: the TiVo Premiere is, basically, that product. It's a formidable digital media hub that can access a wide variety of online and home network video, music, and photos--and it can record all your favorite TV shows. It's not perfect by a longshot (see above), but it's still positioned as the best all-in-one solution to date.
I ordered a TiVo Premiere XL a few days ago...we'll see how it does!

This is great news. I’ve been using Tivo for 8 years and the updates are needed. I’m especially excited about the expanded Internet video capabilities. Price, however, seems pretty steep compared to some of the new Internet video boxes coming out these days, such as Boxee.

I'm not sure whether the problem has been fixed since this article or what but DVR REMOTE LITE (free version) works PERFECTLY. After adding my media access key it worked without a hitch.

Love it.

Go figure. NOW, TODAY, Time Warner has made thier Tuning Adapter inop. They dont know how they did it and have been over 12 hours in "trying" to fix it. As usual, Time Warner has exceeded all expectations for thier Tivo customers. It also shows how much they really care. If their cable or internet was down for over 12 hours, they would loose millions of $$. This doesnt rate on thier scale of importance to fix in a "timely manner". Yes I am pissed, these stupid Tuning Adapter's have been nothin but a pain since day one. I have had technicians on the phone and to the house to try and fix the sound problem. They loose sound at random times and no one knows why...It also makes a real annoying click type sound everytime u change the channel.....

Completely agree with the sentiment here. What's the big deal? I get everything they tout for the Premiere already on my Tivo. Then again, it'll be nice to upgrade when my 4-year-old Tivo HD goes tits up. But I'm not springing for one now.

It is not TiVo's fault. It's the greedy program providers. They impose that the cable co's put the copy prevention flags on the cable-card provided channels. Your locals SHOULD be OK still. I keep my Series-2 active in a spare room to get around this problem.

Jay, you so right…

The new hardware maybe faster and better but honestly, what can it do more? Our current Serise3 HD TiVo’s do everything the new ones can do other than the Picture in picture TV guides.

As for TiVo’s comments about the new UI being to slow on the older HD TiVo’s what are they talking about, I personally love using the beta UI that I have on mine just wish it was default …

Moreover, what is with TiVo’s not adding the hard drive meter for the older units to me it sounds like a small software update can handle that. We would all love to know how much free space we have left. What I would like to see is a pie chart on my computer like iTiVo app has that shows TiVo’s suggested content my planned recorded content and so on.

Alex as for Hulu, yes this would be wonderful but if not Hulu why not Crackle? In addition, what is with not having Joost. Joost may not have much content but it has some good stuff.
On the other hand, just let me stream content from my own computer using something like VNC or who knows what. Personally Hulu and Crackle need to open there eyes. I just am waiting to see what the new Boxee box is going to do with the market. I hope it makes Tivo or the apple Tv change.

I don’t see myself buying a new TiVo now and maybe ever more, but I do see me changing the hard drive very soon now. Does anyone have a view on how much swap size I should setup on a 1tb hd. Replacing a 500 GB hd.

Nevertheless, I been a fan for years from the Serise1 to Serise2 and Serise2 Duel tuner and Serise3 HD. However, I see an end for TiVo and me. With the lack of change and improvements, while making people pay a monthly contract bundled with ad’s I am not a fan of that.

OK maybe I am stupid but.....what do I get above my Tivo HD with an expander attached? I don't see anything that is revolutionary. My tivo already searches all resources available for what I search on....I have been a Tivo customer since my first Phillips series 1 and Tivo has gone completely stagnant. Where is a whole house solution? Where is a better method of going mobile? Can someone please resond and tell me what I would get by upgrading above my Tivo HD? I am dedicated to Tivo but this was a huge let down.....

My tivo already searches all resources available for what I search on….I have been a Tivo customer since my first Phillips series 1 and Tivo has gone completely stagnant. Where is a whole house solution? Where is a better method of going mobile? Can someone please resond and tell me what I would get by upgrading above my Tivo HD? I am dedicated to Tivo but this was a huge let down…..

Wow I just found out about this TiVo® Premiere and I order a TiVo HD just days ago. I should get it today. I called TiVo and they said nothing about a new TiVo.

I read it has a dual core in it. Is it the new Atom CPU that has video on the CPU too. That CPU don't cost a lot and seems like it be very good to use in a new TiVo.

That is very neat for a keyboard to slid out under the TiVo remote.

I think it's a nice update for it.

I spent ALOT of money getting the TiVo HD XL because I liked the ability to transfer the programs into my iPod touch to take with me. I had used my TiVo Series 2 for this for many years. Then I find out that they basically have disabled this feature with the HD models by marking everything copy protected. TiVo has alot of nerve selling this expensive box and TiVo Desktop Plus to provide advertised functionality that can't be used.

I can't believe how many news articles I have seen touting the Premiere's capabilities to stream Amazon, Blockbuster and Netflix. Don't these reporters know that TiVo HD has been doing that for a while now...

Or is there something here that I am missing...

Agree. I really like his comment about hulu. I bet that TiVo would love to get hulu on their DVR.

What a great interview. It's so much better when he's not getting sucker punched by business reporters. I thought he handled the subscription questions really good, but wish that he would have hit back at cable even harder. TiVo with an OTA HD antenna is the best value for your money. Not only do you not pay the $22 per month that cable is charing for DVR + Set top box, but you also save the $40 a month by not paying for cable. Sounds like we shouldn't expect any big moves until they have the court case resolved. Will be interesting to see how much longer that takes.

Downloaded "Archer" episode. It's HD but stupid player won't stretch screen 16x9 so the video is out of proportion. $1.99 down the drain. Unbox sucks.

Pat hit it right on the head. Looking at the features of the Premier, what's really new here? Other than a new UI, everything else seems to be business as usual, packaged in a shiny new box.

And what about existing customers?

They took 3+ years to roll out this?
There is virtually nothing new - just fixing (and unifying) badly implemented things from the past.
It already was aggregating pictures and videos before, it just did it slowly and badly.
But there is still no real MRV solution - no extenders, etc.
It still only has 2 tuners and for the price comes with a small hard-drive.
I assume the channel guide data will still be lacking so it will try to record every single Daily Show instead of recognizing only the real new ones.
The channel lineup probably doesn't combine/remap HD channels to (give the option to) automatically hide the SD channels and pick the HD ones.
It still has a fan, but hopefully some better noise reduction so I don't hear the hard-drive as much as with my Series3.
It doesn't do DLNA so it won't integrate with anything else.
It doesn't have MOCA built-in so I still need to plan out network cable runs. (Wireless-N is only a solution as long as nobody else nearby is running N and I would have to upgrade my network to be a dual frequency network to achieve high speeds.)
