In 1997, I drove to York, parked at the train station, and explored the city over the weekend. I had totally forgotten about Shambles - thanks for the reminder. And I visited the Jorvik Centre. You really need to go, sometime. It seems to me that York also had a museum about WWII, but I could be mistaken. I was in England for 4 months, and almost every weekend was spent in a different location, so it tends to all run together after awhile.

Just for further clarification, I asked at work last week if the 1 and 2p coins are called pennies or pence, and was told that they are called both, but more often called pence. My colleague explained that the change could be because so many Brits have now visited and have a great deal of knowledge of the US and its currency, and want to be clear that they mean British pence and not American pennies.

For what it's worth - they've always asked that presents in luggage not be wrapped. That's not a new requirement.
