I think it is right that muso's do think differently that others. One example i come across often is that people here builders and tradesmen banging and clunking away on their tools, i hear beats and rhythms and new kinds of sounds, that i could possibly use for original material.

Hey Eric,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you are learning something from the talking tabs CDs.

I'm not really the right person to answer whether it will help you learn guitar in general.

My opinion (and nothing but) is that it can help with certain things. The most obvious problem is that it doesn't help you learn either music theory nor does it help with reading music.

It does, however, help with learning the motor movements to fret a guitar and the rhythm to strum the guitar. (And the coordination of the two).

Ultimately, my answer is: Talking Tabs / Play it Now Tunes is part of a complete practice schedule. ;-)

Best Regards and best of luck in your studies,<br />

I picked up a handfull of these CDs. I am a very low level guitar player. I have been tooling around with "Wish You Were Here". It is actually really good. I can already play the intro. The question will be, will this help me learn to play guitar in general?

You mentioned the little instances of soloing during rhythm guitar. That's one thing that helped me when I first started out was to insert little fills in between my chord structures. Its easier if you're writing your own music, plus it will keep you on your toes and help to develop quicker reflexes.

I basically was listening to Randy Rhodes one night (the master of fills), and I realize "I should probably work on that".

I just tried the Play it Now CD for Redemption Song (Bob Marley).. It is actually really good, song broken into easy sections of a few bars at a time, Strum patterns are provided, and "twiddly bits" like the hammer on in the intro are clearly explained. I don't think it would take long for most people to outgrow this method, but as a starting point for a new learner (or for those like me with no ear or rhythm) it is a very good teaching method.

Keep searching for a guitar teacher that fits you and your goals, once you find the right one, you will want to pick up the guitar and play. I'm not an expert but have you focused on technique more than the pleasure of music? My own lessons have evolved into "working on songs" rather than "learning the guitar". Rhythm, chords and theory come in when they are needed, not for their own sake. My first song involved the 4/4 folk strum D_Du_uDu which took me a long time to learn (Green Day - Time of your Life), rhythm is hard for me, it doesn't come naturally at all (I can't sing and play yet because I still count in my head). Now I'm working on two other songs, learning about transcribing and arranging a song for my ability. For instance, what started as a G D Em D progression is now G5 Dsus4/F# Em7 D; it sounds great with the bass string note changing from G to F# to E to D and is slightly easier to play (finger 3 is stationary). It is fun to play with music and come up with embellishments on my own, like two bars of D changed into [D Dsus2] [D Dsus4]. In a nutshell, put the fun back into it.
