“I have 4 domains on Go Daddy and I can say that this company is not very reputable."

I've gotten a couple comments like that before. I also dismiss them without thinking twice. I usually don't Google for other blogs they post on though.

I can attest to the night and day difference experience on the Thinkpad x41 with Windows 7 installed on it. It's comparable to replacing the internal drive with one of the 1.8" SSDs. There's no need!! Windows 7 rocks. Well.. in this case anyhow lol. One tip is to avoid the fingerprint drivers as they can cause sluggishness. -Ravi Shanghavi

Too bad you can't automate creating the specific due date. That would be cool. But I guess for this scenario you already know the exact due date and it's not changing.

Neat idea though. Very useful.

That's really a question of price. If I were just tinkering around with something that I'm not serious about and I didn't care about downtime or quality of service... I would go with GoDaddy because they're cheap.

On the other hand, if I cared about (or needed) quality, reliability, and service... I would go with a different provider. Right now, that provider is WebFaction. I haven't outgrown them, yet. I may never.

Wow, this writeup is a goldmine for me. I'm just getting started and it's as though I've been driving at night in the pitch dark. You article at least turned on the headlights for me.

You've got me wondering now, if you were starting off again would use GoDaddy or would go with someone akin to WebFaction from the get-go.

It apperas that WebFaction may have addressed many of the limitations you found at GoDaddy.

Bruce,

Good points. You're right that the paper doesn't compare EBS to other alternatives. I tried to focus on how well EBS might fit into any arbitrary organization. As for how EBS handles being wrong... In theory, it self-adjusts for future projects but does nothing for the current project. Here's a place that I disagree with Joel. He says in his articles that a block of padding is added to the project to account for stuff like this. I think this is too loose an approach.

Russell,

the paper seems ok as far as a review of EBS goes, but doesn't put EBS into context alongside other alternatives used for traditional plan-based software development. Also, I just skimmed this, but there didn't seem to be evidence about how well it stood up to other solutions on offer, which would be interesting to see. Lastly, what happens when the estimate is wrong? Sorry, couldn't resist, as tend toward agile, lean and evo approaches in this stuff.
