You did get lucky, Paul. That sounds like sloppy customer service at best and deliberate obfuscation at worst.

Rafael, the optional 12-month trial subscription is included, but it's not anything special: if you visit McAfee's stand-alone site, you'll find that they offer the same free 12-month complimentary trial for anyone who wants it. A lot of these offers require sign-up with a credit card and will automatically renew unless you explicitly cancel. I don't know if this is the case with McAfee's trial, but they are surely counting on trial users growing reliant enough on the service over the year that they'll be willing to fork over money to keep it.

Here's the main reason it's totally unnecessary: Microsoft now offers AV/spyware/malware protection for free. See http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

I think the customer-friendly way to include a virus scanner trial is to offer it as a stand-alone download for those who buy VMWare. Instead, they bundle it in the full version, knowing that most people will opt for the full install as it contains the tools to run other operating systems. I opted for the full install for this reason.

Fortunately, the virus scanner is not auto-installed. I was able to decline the offer and check a box so it doesn't keep popping up when I run Windows. The downside is that I now have a permanent 'Install McAfee VirusScan Plus' link in my VMWare Virtual Machine menu. This link is right under the essential link to 'Install VMware Tools'...I'm sure this placement is no coincidence.

You’re right that the overall process should be improved.

I think that the optional virus scanner doesn’t cost you more, it’s already included in the VMware license, isn’t it?

It doesn't end with the purchase.

I bought VMWare 2 in late September, and when they announced VM3 I called them and asked if there was an upgrade discount, and if so what the window was. They said no.

Then I get email from them when they ship VM3 that I'm entitled to a free upgrade due to the fact that I paid the higher price when I bought VM2. I had no idea that was the case, they never told me over the phone, and if they would have waited a couple more weeks I would have ended up buying the new version at full price so I could run Win7.

I got lucky; I'm sure others weren't so lucky.

OK, I think I'm going to try this NaNoWriMo thing. I've been thinking about it all morning, and the idea of a self-imposed challenge for something I've been thinking about for a while really seems attracting.

(And there is also the strange lure of using yet another beautifully crafted tool... ;-) )

Thanks for pointing it out!

Alan, I find Scrivener is useful for research in general, although I tend to use it most of the time for creative writing. It's a good tool for gathering together a bunch of disparate material, notes, and other chunks of information for a given project. It's a great tool for outlining and nonlinear restructuring of thoughts, chapters, topics, etc. It's on my 'someday' list of tools I'd like to blog about here, but who knows when I'll get to that.

As for the captcha, I really wish I didn't need it, but I'd have to ditch commenting without it. I have NO IDEA what that second word is in your snapshot! That's ridiculous. I'm going to look around and see if I can find something better. Meanwhile, there's a refresh option on the captcha if a given grouping of words is unreadable. You can always refresh until you get one that's easier to read. That's one tactic I use. I also always copy my comment before I attempt to submit it, just in case it fails and I need to start again. Easier just to paste it back in. Not ideal, though. Sorry about the trouble, and thanks for taking the time to post a comment despite the annoyances.

I'd love to hear more about how you use Scrivener. Is it only for creative writing?

(By the way, the captcha are really getting in the way: I got it wrong four times, each time because a letter was so garbled I could not read it. For instance, what is the second word in this snapshot: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2189064/Safari.png ?)

(Or maybe one should not hit "back" to get back one's comment, it seems that part of the problem comes from there. But having to retype everything is a pain.)

Glad to hear another vote for Byline. I hadn't heard about Eventbox/Socialite. I'm eager to see what Realmac comes up with -- thanks for the tip.

Leo: You can add an offsite page (redirect) to point to your WP blog in RW, which will then show up in your navigation.

Thanks for a great article!

Like you I've been seeking out alternatives for NetNetsWire, which is generally a good application, but limited in some areas.

I've settled on Byline for the iPhone and have been very happy with my choice. It strikes a great balance between an attractive design and a strong feature set.

I'm putting Gruml through its paces based on your recommendation and am quite impressed so far. It could use a bit of polish in some areas (e.g. I find some of the toolbar icons confusing) and I miss features such as Smart Folder that are available in NNW. Though, it's still a strong contender...and still in beta.

I'm also keeping a close eye on EventBox, which was recently purchased by Realmac Software and is going to be re-released as Socialite. EventBox is already a capable solution and I have no doubt that the folks at Realmac Software will make it even better.

Hi Troy

I was reading the excellent articles you wrote on Rapid Weaver v Wordpress.

My site is created in RW and currently I have a Wordpress.com blog.

My problem is that I cannot find a way to get the WP blog listed in the sites navigation menu.

Do you have any suggestions? (I have Googled everything I can think of to find some clues, which is how I found your articles)

many thanks for your time in answering this,

Leo

Apple's built-in tool does the job, but SnapNDrag does a better job. With SnapNDrag Pro, I can quickly and easily change image format (png, TIFF, or JPEG). I can choose the JPG image quality. I can scale a screenshot down on the fly without needing to open Photoshop. I can choose between a crosshair-selection, or choose to capture just one window, or the whole desktop. I can also take a shot after a 'countdown' period in the event that I need a few seconds to set up my desktop. The app also maintains copies of my recent shots within the app so they don't clutter my desktop (which persists across user sessions). I can customize my file naming convention for my shots, auto-add borders, and even add a date/time stamp if I want. That's quite a lot of functionality for such a tiny little app.

I'm not sure why you need a screenshot app, when shift-command-3 or shift-command-4 work very well for that (or a subsection of the screen).

I read full books on my iPhone all the time. It's especially nice at night with the backlight, something the kindle doesn't have.

It's perfectly readable, just takes more page turns than normal. I think for some people it's not going to work, but for some, like me, it's great.

Replace a book? No. But for times I don't want to bring anything but my iPhone? Sure.

Yeah, that's surely the biggest drawback of RapidWeaver. On the WordPress side, the main drawback is keeping it updated and secure if you self-host.

I'm a musician, and I used rapidweaver to design my website. Now I'm starting to look into wordpress maily due to the ability to post from any computer. I feel really limited by the fact that I need my development laptop with me to post on my website's blog. Wordpress also has a lot of great (and free) widgets.
