I also watched Kenya Hara's talk and his book 'designing design.'

It's interesting how there are similar concepts in japanese culture...The one that it reminded me of was 'Mitate'

Good post Ko. Not sure if this is really related, but I've always preferred my bedroom and apartment to be very sparsely furnished and decorated. I hate trinkets and things like that and prefer to keep clutter to a minimum (e.g. buying a kindle and throwing all of my books away). I thought it was slight OCD or perhaps just being boring, but now I'm going to pitch it to people as my philosophy of emptiness.

It's helpful to think of "designer" as descriptive attribute rather than a prescriptive noun. It opens up so much more possibility. Thanks Ko!

Ah, interesting! It is almost contradictory to label someone who is 概-shaped with a specific action-based descriptor because they're capable of so much. Labels and names only exist to communicate to the outside world (i.e.outside of your own mind) and a "Designer" label may not be the most accurate description if we were to look at it as one of the "hats" you can wear (e.g. a firefighter, chef, marketer). The capability of a 概-shaped designer is endless and can wear any "hat", they could be a 概-shaped firefighter, 概-shaped chef, and I can't imagine it being anything other than positive on their profession.

If we look at a "Designer" though as a state-of-being, living their entire life, 24-7, thinking, planning, finding inspiration, exploring the world, creating, learning new tools, with the intent to develop a plan-of-creation; then the "Designer" label is elevated from just another "hat"-descriptor to a "way-of-life" and a "state-of-being". At which point the 概-shaped Designer wouldn't need a focus because they could apply the philosophies to all aspects of creative action, whether it's economics or sailing.

Once one becomes 概-shaped, would it be to narrow to call them a designer? Do 概-shaped individuals still need some sort of focus, like design or economics or sailing?

boy i would have shit my pants if any of my profs in school ever invoked henry rollins. i too take inspiration from his spoken word - especially his earnest expressed in lines like "...its like being murdered a little at a time with a tiny knife.." in reference to people who don't know what they want from life and who get in his way or slow him down.

this was the best fucking design article i have read in a real long time. thanks.
