Well, looks like the next Gauntlet will go up next week. We're doing a campaign at the store and so games aren't the usual, in turn I wasn't able to do The Gauntlet this week and I'll be gone this weekend.

Generally speaking, I prefer Blogs - but I still frequent a couple Forums, and maintain memberships of all the major players in case I have a need for them. To an extent, I see Forums as the ideal way to promote my own Blog though, to find like-minded people who may enjoy what I have to say, and so will come to read more of it. lol

I hear ya. I was feeling the exact same way when I picked it up, just tired of reading about more Marines kicking ass, and I'm glad I did pick it up. I'm not sure what it is but Gav Thorpe just has this style I find refreshing.

Sounds interesting, I'll pick up a copy next time I'm shopping for books. I've been feeling somewhat burned out on 40k novels lately so this might be a nice change of pace. Thanks for the info about it.

I agree. Kommandos present a psychological asset. Nobody likes having a unit arrive flawlessly behind them. The meta in my area though doesn't let me fully utilize that since they are all hunkering in vehicles, at least with Snikrot. I think a normal Nob with a PK outflanking would give more scare to those I face than Snikrot does. Maybe that's it, I just need to adapt my use of the unit instead of waiting on everyone else to adapt to allow me to use one of my favorite units.

I have struggled to use kommandos, despite loving the idea of them. I find too often they present a handy target to shoot at while my opponent waits for everyone else to charge.

I haven't run them with Snikrot, though, so maybe I'll give that a try.

For me the value of the Kommandos isn't in what they do directly (though sometimes they can do very well) it's in how they make the other guy play. Knowing you have a unit that can pop on from an edge, double flamer and then charge you before you can react, many people try to avoid the edges. This helps clump them together in the middle for the main force to jump on.

Cool idea for a series, I'll definitely try out something new next time I play and report back on my experience. It might be a while though as I'm not getting many chances to play lately, though I am probably not too representative of most gamers in that regard. I'd suggest you try it out at first as a weekly thing and see what type of response you get. Best of luck to you, I really like your blog and am glad I came across it. Thanks!

I have posted/pontificated in favor of smaller games for a while now.

I much prefer 1500. I like the added space, I like having to choose, I like my opponent having to choose, and, as an ork player, I like not having to rent a U-Haul truck to transport my army.

I don't fault anyone who likes the "grand scale" of big battles--you know, the ones GW advertises as a way to sell more miniatures--but I am not interested in playing them.

The thing is though that Tau Online was not a Tau only forum. It began that way and a majority of the members were certainly Tau players but the site was not strictly for them. I can see how ATT would make sense, at least for some of the players, but not for the community as a whole. Aside from the basis of the forum, the community itself was a very different animal than that of ATT.

I would look at the Legal on Tau Online. The content is copyrighted to the member that created it AND to Tau Online. It would be my opinion that copying the entire Database, would be quite illegal, unless you had every single member who posted's express consent to copy their submissions, OR Skylights permission, which is doubtful.

Taking this and the fact that the site is a "financial investment" into consideration, Skylight will almost positively have you in legal trouble in order to protect his investment.

The easiest way around this would probably have a petition where members can sign up to allow their work to be published, or having them do the new re-posting themselves. Ultimately, i think that making an entire new "Tau Online" would be foolish. It would be easier and safer to move to Advanced Tau Tactica which is an already established Tau forum. This would provide a much greater support base to protect you from any legal problems, and since many users from Tau Online already are on ATT, it would be a smooth transfer, and easier to get knowledge about the shift to the masses.

Database ownership laws in the EU, say the creator has ownership of the database. It would seem that this Skylight didn't create this database at all, and so the creator of it (presumably the other admins and members) would have ownership rights to it. It would get very murky especially with international law crossovers causing all sorts of problems, but I don't think it's as clear cut as you suggest Jezlad

As CM says, Skylight doesn't own it. He owns the domain, the forum, but the code is FT's, the content is the members', the IP is GW's.

this is what the legal on the site says.

"All pages, content, forum posts and other media on Tau Online are copyrighted to Tau Online and their corresponding authors in so far as this does not conflict with any existing trademarks, copyrights, intellectual property and/or patents."

meaning that individuals still have copyright to thier work, but not anyone elses.

then there is this

"Copying, reproducing or duplicating any parts of this website is not allowed without express permission from Tau Online. This copyright notice isn't against fair use; we only ask that you quote no more than two, 7 line paragraphs, and that you give credit to this website and its author for its use. which would mean taking the database and posting it will probably get you into legal trouble.

My theory would be that you will need to get individual users permission to re-post stuff, and therefore cannot just re-post the whole database.

On another note, why not just join with Advanced Tau Tactica instead of creating a whole new forum. I know that many users from Tau online are already there.

I don't think he (Skylight) owns the database, just the url name. The individual posts (like my articles that I've written) belong to the community. In turn, none of us actually own GW IP either. I doubt posting a picture of a model I own on any particular site gives the owner of that site ownership of that picture. Did I get that right?

The law will be on you faster than flies to a cow crap mate. One email to your host and they'll pull the hosting from beneath you.

You simply can't duplicate a database you don't own, every word in that file belongs to the owner of the server it was stolen from... ie - Skylight (sorry to say it).

Eesh, that was brutal. The new players didn't show but one of the better routine tournament players did so we played. I was aiming for 1,000pt list at most when I built my lists but he wanted to do no less than 1,750, so 1,750 it was. That meant me throwing down everything I owned and using proxies to bulk out some units and toss down a Monolith.

My experience has always been that if you have to throw down everything you own and then proxy on top of, well things aren't going to go well, and they didn't. Nate is an Ork player with a very competitive list and he just tore through me and got me to phase out. I expected as much, my Necron army is far from competitive, they're still small and lacking a lot. Oh well, it was practice and that's valuable win or lose.
