Thanks for this. The upgrade was smooth. Ironically, I work about 20 yards from the Lightroom team, but nobody was around to ask when I needed to do this.

Hmmmm... progressive education with a healthy dose of modern technology. Imagine that. I have been trying to sell this within the district I work in. It does not fit into the current education as business model nor into the accountability by testing model, so it is generally rejected. I find that to be a sad thing, personally.

Really good points. Thank you. I would add one more point to
your wish list: Individual Learning Time and Path. Instead of simply grouping
children by year of birth, each individual student would move forward based
on his/her individual learning capabilities and "path." Some kids
learn faster, some slower, some kids want to spend more time learning math,
while some others could concentrate on literature.

Education is meant to balance theory and practical application. In most schools it doesn't. The purpose of learning is two-fold. One, to be able to actually apply what one learns to life (not getting high scores on tests), and two, to be able to continue to educate oneself going forward.

The current state of education is, overall, antiquated. Not just because of a lack of smart boards and newer technology, but because the focus is on passing tests.

Multiple choice tests have nothing to do with real life. They don't verify the ability to apply.

We have great tools now to give students what they need to actually use and apply what they learn. It's about doingness.

Let's get that to be the focus and then people will get products and have control over the area that they are interested in.

As a kindergarten NYC public school teacher going on my 7th year I have come to realize that there are many things that need to be changed in the current education system. The first is teacher training. All teachers need to be trained to teach all type of abilities (and disabilities). The second change is that there needs to be smaller class sizes. I know that this is talked about often but I can tell you that in a class of 25 students, there is no way that I'm going to get to know all of my students as well as would be needed for their maximum development and success. The third change is systemic. While I'm fortunate to be in a school with progressive curriculum that emphasizes hands-on learning and group problem-solving, the answer to why the US is behind other countries is NOT to turn kindergarten into first grade. The answer lies in looking at child development and building curriculum, ie. school experiences, based on that! There should be more emphasis on play, teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, following your own curiosity, AND how to use technology appropriately and efficiently- in ALL grades. I agree with you, the author of this article, that the "box" needs to change. We need to incorporate technology into the classroom; it is the main form of communication that kids will grow up using and therefore it has to be part of their school learning. I also agree, whole-heartedly, that students need to be involved in making decisions about their own learning. Thank you for sharing these views, as I hope they spark a larger discussion.

40%!!!!! How many of these kids would be better off with more qualified attention, better educational tools, or perhaps simply working on more (or less) demanding tasks? There has to be better way. Really interesting comments. Thank you!!

Great point of view. Fortunately I'm the mother of a 10 yr old that has thrived in the current system, however I can see how an interactive experience would be more enriching and exiting for her. I also know that close to 40% of her class is medicated. When medicating our children is the norm, than the system needs to be reevaluated and adapted to the minds of our kids now and not continue to base it on a system generations old. Things are changing very rapidly, our children have more information than ever, technology is at hands reach...education should definitely be better.

Good article Ed. My oldest starts Kindergarten this fall, and I' really interested to see how they teach at his school. I'm fairly new to the area we live in, so I'm not sure about the school system here. He also has AdHD, so we've been working with him on that (yes he's medicated, as I wish I was at his age, as I am an ADD adult). Some kids with this do get looked over, or treated as less than intelligent. Hopefully his school curriculum will be one that helps him integrate it into his way of thinking and use it to his advantage. I think working in groups will help with this, as well as helping him to learn to work with others to reach a common goal.

Thanks Eduardo for this excellent advice and information gathering. It was such a pleasure having you take part in Silver & Ink! I agree, having your eggs in multiple baskets makes for a safer and healthier batch of eggs. Working with moving images in the form of video can teach a photographer much as well. I think it is a compelling new area emerging in the space between still and moving images, where a new dialogue and skill set is being developed, different from what each discipline possesses on its own.
