To be honest I think it would be wiser to invest into a generic .com or .com.au domain for your business as a safe investment. .

Buying one of these .anything TLD domains on a hunch that it could work well for your branding strategy is risky imo especially at the $185,000 a year price tag.

I would look at investing in a good quality generic .com.au or .com domain which already has popularity in the market. I mean if you want to get custom you can go out and buy a LL.com.au domain name for example they can be picked up for reasonable prices in the Australian market or even a generic .com.au domain is not that expensive compared to global rates.

Sure enough this new domain extension will be favoured by global brands who look at a marketing fad.

That been said I believe around 20 companies in Australia have shown interest into this new TLD, so I guess time will tell, a main indication will be ranking with Google in comparison with established websites.

Read article on same recently. Agree with the premise that it is more of a cash grab by Registrars than a useful tool given the continuing exponential growth of primary search to find sites rather than directly to a principal URL...or even smart URL completion by browsers. Why would I need to go to qantas.travel or qantas.fly or bhp.biggestminingcompanyintheworld if the browser finds it for me anyway?

Just another way for squatters to steal legitimate IntProp and offer greater chances for people to be misdirected to phony sites.

But I'm sure Julia Gillard is already ready to register bigred.australia

I have heard similar reports. Microsoft obviously has the money and muscle to invest in it but it does need Nokia (and the others) to come up with the phones and the pricing to penetrate the market. Being a Nokia phone fan (always had one until I decide to buy a smart phone) they certainly have the credentials and I think there is space for mid priced phones. The challenge is that 5 years ago there where only a handful of players, today there are so many.
