Sometime — presumably in the second week in June — Commerce will officially break ground on the expansion of its library.

At the insistence of city manager Clarence Bryant, the Commerce Library Board agreed Monday night to schedule a groundbreaking ceremony to, as Bryant put it, for the city to “get some kind of positive thing out of” the $2 million, 5,000-square-foot expansion.
Continue reading "City seeks date for library 'groundbreaking'"

It is traditional to honor on Memorial Day each year the sacrifices of American military personnel in wars and conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. We see parades, ceremonial laying of wreaths, and hear endless speeches about the sacrifices made in the name of protecting our freedom.

That is all well and good, but the best Memorial Day honor American veterans and current military personnel could get — aside from a world where soldiers are not needed — is a commitment from — make that a requirement of — Congress and the President to fully fund the Veterans Administration healthcare system.
Continue reading "OPINION: Honor veterans with better healthcare"

            By Susan Harper

During the last week or so, I’ve been having a dialogue with some of my Commerce friends about why it is, exactly, that none of us would ever want to leave Commerce. Is there an “exactly?” Can we really pin it down? We’ve been finding it fun to try.

I actually think there’s a mystery here: something ineffable about Commerce that goes far back and down deep, a history or a quality that’s at the very heart of the place, and that we may never uncover. Whatever it is, it’s been around for quite a while. I remember being puzzled, 60 years ago, about my mother’s seemingly chronic homesickness for Commerce. She believed in going where her husband’s work took him, so she did her very best to bloom where she was planted, and over the course of 40 years she blossomed and put down roots in that Yankee soil. But it was always clear to me – and pretty puzzling – that in leaving this particular small Southern town for what I saw as the glamour and excitement of New York, she had made a huge sacrifice. And there was never any question as to where she and Dad would retire. He had promised to bring her home, and he finally did. Interestingly, he was happy here too — happier than he had dared to hope. It became his hometown as well as hers!
Continue reading "OPINION: What makes Commerce great?"

The Commerce Police Department is investigating the alleged rape of a juvenile female at a Hillcrest Street residence.

According to the incident report, the girl was spending the night with a friend, awakened at around 1 a.m. and went to the bathroom, but as she opened the door, a black male pulled her in, pushed her to the floor and raped her.

The incident came to light the next day when a 23-year-old white male in the girl’s residence noticed that the victim had not come out of her room all day. He asked her what was wrong, and she recounted the events of the previous night.

The report said the girl was afraid to scream for help during the incident, and the next day was afraid to tell anyone what happened.

The police have the name of the suspect, as well as physical evidence of the assault, the report indicated. Initial attempts to locate the man — whose name is known — proved futile, but the case has been turned over to police detectives.
Commerce’s proposed budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year continues to be a work in progress, but following a budget work session Monday night, at least the Commerce City Council has a plan.

By consensus, the council agreed on a budget scenario that proposes to leave the council with a $72,134 surplus while closing the $219,982 revenue gap with a property tax increase, cost cuts in liability and health insurance and a $22,000 increase in occupational tax rates for businesses.
Continue reading "Council finally reaches budget consensus"

My sister recently commented that she didn’t see why she couldn’t have a normal dog like everybody else. I turned around and looked in the back seat, where her abnormal dog lay facing forward and looking up at me with one mournful eye, as if to say, ‘See what I have to put up with?’

“Other people have normal dogs,” my sister continued. “They do normal dog-things. You know.” I didn’t know, but I supposed she meant bringing the newspaper in (back when newspapers were delivered right to people’s driveways), or fetching someone’s pipe and slippers — which wouldn’t be of much use to Emily. She doesn’t smoke anything, ever, and as our brother points out, she wears heels all the time. “She even wears heels with her pajamas,” he said. And it’s true. So no dog of hers is likely to be fetching slippers.
Continue reading "OPINION: The new normal"

The Commerce City Council will hold another “informational meeting” before it votes on whether to adopt the East Jackson Overlay District.

The proposal, a joint venture of the Jackson County and Commerce planning departments, adds new restrictions to new development along the main corridors entering Commerce.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, in the Commerce Room of the Commerce Civic Center.

Mayor Clark Hill indicated that he wanted staff to demonstrate to citizens that the overlay will not add burdensome development costs.

“The expensive part of developing has nothing to do with the city of Commerce,” he said. You have DOT requirements, EPD requirements on storm water. Every drop of water that falls on your property, you have to account for.”

As high school graduations loom locally, the $1 trillion in student debt nationwide is becoming a frequent topic on the news and in politics as the potential next threat to a weak economy.

Last week, a study was released showing that the average college graduate accepting a diploma has $20,000 in student debt and just a 50-50 chance of finding full-time employment. Total student debt is rapidly increasing, in no small part to the proliferation of for-profit schools with high tuition and low graduation rates, but also because the recession has affected parents’ ability to fund their children’s education and tuitions have gone up in response to recession-induced cuts in funding to higher education.
Continue reading "OPINION: There are ways to reduce student debt load"

It was a final lap that Cale Pirtle will remember for the rest of his life.

The East Jackson senior standout covered the final 400 meters of the oh-so-close Class AA 3,200 finals in just 63 seconds Friday to run down Westminster’s Jordan Flowers and win in a photo finish.
Pirtle wasn’t afraid to leave everything on the track.
