Senior point guard Darius Gibson has been Tates Creek's bread-and-butter guy all season, especially in December and January when, if he didn't play well, the Commodores were toast.

But here it is February and Tates Creek is bringing more to the table as it showed in beating host Bryan Station 51-46 Thursday night.

Gibson, averaging a team-high 15 points, picked up his third foul in the opening minute of the second quarter and sat out the rest of the half.

Tates Creek Coach Wayne Breeden admitted that would have been a dicey scenario for his relatively inexperienced team earlier this season.

"Without Darius Gibson, we would've been in real trouble," he said. "But tonight, on the road, another senior guard stepped up and had a great game."

Breeden was referring to Brian Tilford, whose energetic play sparked the Commodores to victory. He had 11 of his 14 points in the first half, and he also finished with three assists and three rebounds.

"I knew I had to step up and help the team," Tilford said. "Every team we play focuses on Darius, so I knew I had to be the guy to take some of the pressure off him."

Tilford's highlight play of the night came with the clock winding down in the first half. Tilford was dribbling the ball out beyond the top of the key when Breeden shouted at him to go for it. Tilford drove around the right wing and swooped in for a layup.

"With post-season approaching, that's what you're happy to see — guys showing confidence in their game and ability to make a great play like that," Breeden said.

But this was a joint effort by the Commodores.

Freshman Jordan Fucci was strong inside, getting 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior Braxton McFarland contributed eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, including a huge one in the closing minute.

Gibson wound up with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. Daiquan Epps added seven points, three rebounds and two steals.

Of course it was a fight to the finish. Tates Creek's previous five games included a triple-overtime win over Paul Laurence Dunbar, and overtime losses to Madison Central and Franklin County.

"That's been our modus operandi all year," Breeden said. "We've been in a lot of basketball games, and we've finished some, and some we haven't been able to finish.

"Tonight a lot of guys stepped up and made big free throws and got some big rebounds to help us win."

Tates Creek's defense did its job, limiting Bryan Station to 28 percent shooting, including just 21 percent (6-for-28) in the second half. The Defenders didn't score in the last three minutes.

Bryan Station was led by Jaylen Beckham's 16 points, three rebounds and three steals. Marcus Williams had 13 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

"We're just not executing," Coach Mike Allen said.

"We're not consistently coming out of timeouts and carrying out assignments offensively or defensively."

Allen also pointed to rebounding as a weak spot.

"The margin of error for my team is very slim. We're outsized every game, so our guards have to collectively rebound. We haven't grasped that concept yet."

It's not something you get to read about your favorite team every day but if you're a devoted fan of the Kentucky Wildcats, you're ecstatic to know that they're being honored for a feat that many teams can only dream about. It was January 4, 1943 and the Wildcats were on a winning streak. It's still an NCAA record today. By the time the streak ended on January 8, 1955, the Wildcats had won 129 games. Ripley's Believe It or Not accepted a submission by John Carpenter, a native of Kentucky, who provided a comic that was featured on www.comics.com and in newspapers all over the country. The black and white comic rendition will become a part of the gallery of unusual facts and strange events that Ripley's Believe It Or Not gathers.

The current Wildcats may be in a different class altogether. The University of Kentucky Athletic Association is partnering with DISH Network Corporation to given the Wildcats historic path to 2,000 NCAA victories beginning on February 10. "It is a great honor to partner with DISH Network during the University's historic journey to reach 2,000 victories in men's basketball," Jason Schlafer said. Schlafer is the University of Kentucky's Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing. The Wildcats fans can search Facebook to follow along with the historic journey by way of the Internet. The historic event will be a part of the game against Florida on the same night.

Present coaches for the Wildcats include head coach Billy Gillespie, assistant coach Jeremy Cox, assistant coach Glynn Cyprie, assistant coach Tracy Webster and director of basketball operations Alvin Brooks. Gillespie is the 21st coach as of April 2007 and he comes to the table with some pretty big shoes to fill but he's no stranger to success bringing a wealth of experience from his three seasons of head coaching experience at Texas A&M.

Games left to be played in the 2008-2009 season will put the Wildcats on the floor in competitions against Florida on February 10, Arkansas on February 14, Vanderbilt on February 17, Tennessee on February 21, South Carolina on February 25, LUS on February 28, Georgia on March 4 and Florida again on March 7. The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) is the independent nonprofit organization that establishes and improves standards of accounting and financial reporting for state and local governments. Last summer, the GASB proposed amendments to two current statements dealing with accounting and financial reporting of pension plans. The exposure drafts of two proposed rule changes could add massive liabilities to city financial statements as well as force up pension costs at a time when public employers are struggling to pay continually increasing contribution rates.

These two exposure drafts – generally the last public documents issued before the final rules are implemented – would amend GASB Statements 25 and 27. Statement 25 deals with financial statements of pension plans, while Statement 27 deals with financial statements of covered employers. Although these changes have not been made final yet, they are expected to be adopted soon.

The District 7 Urban County Council race is the race that apparently won't happen.

One of the two candidates to succeed KC Crosbie, who decided not to seek re-election, has been disqualified because his candidacy petition did not contain 100 valid signatures, the minimum needed to run for office.

That leaves Jennifer Scutchfield, 39, as the only candidate in November, barring a write-in campaign by another district resident.

Jason Scott Rainey was disqualified last week after a legal audit of his petition. He hasn't ruled out a write-in campaign but sounded doubtful Wednesday night.

Rainey, 30, a real estate appraiser in his first run for public office, said he had submitted a petition to the Fayette County clerk's office with 103 signatures from voters in his district.

"Basically, the day after the filing deadline, my opponent contacted me and let me know she had an issue with the signatures I had collected," Rainey said. "She said if I didn't withdraw, she was going to take me to circuit court. ..."

"It's unfortunate the way this happened."

Scutchfield, 39, a development officer for the Girl Scouts, said she was just going by the rules.

She asked the clerk's office to verify the signatures on Rainey's petition. "The clerk verified 99 registered voters. Obviously that was below the hundred needed.

"I'm a lawyer by training. I'm a by-the-rules kind of person," said Scutchfield, who collected 217 signatures on her petition.

Eliminating a candidate for not having the requisite number of signatures happens "every now and then," said Tracy Merriman, elections department manager in the county clerk's office. "It's not the most unheard-of thing. It just doesn't happen very often.

"We recommend getting 125 to 150 signatures to be safe," in case signatures have to be struck for any reason, she said.

The clerk's office checks signatures only when asked by an opponent or an eligible voter, Merriman said. Otherwise, the office takes all filing papers "on their face."

Signatures are verified by comparing each name and address on a petition against Fayette County's voter registration list. "People often ask us to do this, and we do provide that service for a fee," Merriman said. The charge is 25 cents a name.

The same thing happened to one of Crosbie's opponents when she first ran for council six years ago. "When I reviewed the signatures, clearly to my naked eye you could see somebody had signed for multiple people," she said.

Crosbie went to Fayette Circuit Court and had her opponent's petition thrown out. "It's happened to other candidates. I don't think it's unique to this district," she said.

In 2006, District 4 council member Julian Beard was nearly thrown off the November ballot because of a legal challenge over the validity of his candidacy petition. But a judge ruled that Beard's opponent, Bill Roberts, acted in "bad faith" in trying to get Beard kicked out of the race.

Both names were on the ballot. Beard won the race.

WASHINGTON Fewer construction workers will be needed. Don't expect as many interior designers or advertising copywriters, either. Retailers will get by with leaner staffs. While the economy is strengthening, millions of jobs lost in the recession could be gone for good.



And unlike in past recessions, jobs in the beleaguered manufacturing sector aren't the only ones likely lost forever. What sets the Great Recession apart is the variety of jobs that may not return.



That helps explain why economists say it will take at least five years for the economy to regain the 8.2 million jobs wiped out by the recession longer than in any other recovery since World War II.



It means that even as the economy strengthens, more Americans could face years out of work. Already, the percentage of the labor force unemployed for six months or longer is 4.3 percent. That's the highest rate on records dating to 1948.



Behind the trend are the cutbacks businesses made in the recession to make up for a loss of customers. To sustain earnings, they found ways to produce the same level of goods or services with fewer workers. Automation, global competition and technological efficiencies helped solidify the trend.

Thirteen was a lucky number for Kentucky on Tuesday night. Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Kentucky beat Florida.

That continued a trend in which Kidd-Gilchrist rises to the big-game occasion.

In UK's four games against ranked opponents (Kansas, North Carolina, Louisville and Florida), Kidd-Gilchrist has averaged 16.8 points and 13 rebounds. He had double-doubles in three of the four games, missing one against Kansas by one rebound.

"He just has a fierceness to him," UK Coach John Calipari said in explaining Kidd-Gilchrist's big-game productivity.

Of course, Kidd-Gilchrist contributed defensively, too. Calipari assigned him to fellow freshman Bradley Beal, arguably Florida's best all-around player. Beal scored 14 points but made only five of 15 shots. His six rebounds were tolerable.

When asked about Kidd-Gilchrist's knack for gobbling up space en route to a fast-break score, Calipari said the freshman seemed to need only two strides to get from the three-point line to the basket.

Yet, the UK coach again mentioned how Kidd- Gilchrist can get better: by enjoying his work.

"He reminds me of Derrick Rose," Calipari said in reference to his freshman star at Memphis in 2007-08, "in that he's tougher on himself than I am on him."

10 assists

Freshman point guard Marquis Teague posted a career-high 10 assists.

Teague said he no longer is concerned with scoring.

"I always ask for my assists," he said. "(And) see if I have at least three or four rebounds."

Teague acknowledged a firmer grasp of point guard play on the college level. In the last five games, he has had 28 assists and 10 turnovers.

"I feel I'm getting better every game," he said. "I will try to build on this."

Syracuse? Ohio State?

With Florida having played Ohio State and Syracuse earlier in the season, comparisons with Kentucky were inevitable.

"Ohio State is very versatile," Beal said. "Similar to this Kentucky team."

Florida Coach Billy Donovan said Ohio State did not have as much length as Kentucky.

"Syracuse has every bit as much length, and they have more depth," Donovan said.

While noting the one-and-done nature of the NCAA Tournament, Donovan said of the Cats, "If they went all the way, it would not be surprising."

New normal?

A reporter asked Doron Lamb if a 20-point blowout victory was the "new normal" for Kentucky. The Cats have won four straight games by 20 or more points.

"I hope so," Lamb said with a slight smile. "We're playing with a lot of energy."

Vitale sick

Vitale said before the game that he was ill.

"I feel terrible," he said with a noticeably scratchy voice.

But the show must go on.

Vitale is scheduled for the North Carolina-Duke game Wednesday night. It will be his 40th UNC-Duke game.

He also plugged an "All-Access Dickie V" feature that will air on ESPNU's 6 p.m. sportscast on Wednesday.

Pearl vision

Former Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl sat in the front row opposite the Florida bench.

Pearl said he was in Bowling Green on business. It marked the first SEC game he's seen this season.

Davis blocks

Anthony Davis blocked four shots, raising his season's total to 120. That's good for ninth place on the SEC's single-season list.

No. 8 is Robert Horry, who blocked 121 in 1991-92.

Walker struggles

Kentucky continued to be poison for Florida guard Erving Walker. He missed all seven of his shots (four from three-point range).

That lowered his career totals against UK to 19-for-78 from the field (13-for-45 from three-point range).

A Western Kentucky woman won't be sent to prison as long as she repays an elderly woman she was being paid to care for.



The Paducah Sun reported 31-year-old Nancey Gail Ali of McCracken County appeared before a judge in Paducah on Wednesday and was given eight years imprisonment for theft. However, the court allowed her probation as long as she completes a drug treatment program and repays a 97-year-old stroke victim about $1,300 for jewelry stolen from her.



Ali admitted she took three pieces of jewelry and forged a check while caring for Jimmie Mahoney as an employee of PNR Sitter Services of Paducah. Ali said she stole to buy drugs.



Sheriff's Detective Greg Moyers said among stolen item were the wedding ring of Mahoney's late husband.

■ Senior guard Moriah Hughes poured in 30 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead visiting Monticello past North Laurel 66-56.

■ Mercy, ranked third in the state in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, edged host Scott County 67-63 to run its record to 21-4. Whitney Hartlage led the winners with 16 points.

■ Junior guard Taylor Porter scored 31 points, almost half of Lawrence County's total, but it wasn't enough as host Paintsville won 69-65 in double overtime.

■ Maddie Mitchell and Gabby Bowie each got 14 points as host Sayre edged Nicholas County 39-37. Mitchell gave the Lady Spartans the lead with two free throws with 18 seconds left, and Nicholas County missed a shot with five seconds left.

■ Keria Lockett hit a free throw with 22 seconds left to give visiting Montgomery County a three-point lead, and the Indians held on to beat No. 17 Lexington Catholic 47-46. Macie Spence led the winners with 14 points and seven rebounds. Alex Botkin led Catholic with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the Lady Knights were outshot 43 percent to 35 percent and hit only five of eight foul shots, while the winners hit eight of 13.

■ Larryn Brook had 13 points and Ashton Feldhaus added 11 as visiting Madison Central, ranked 12th in the state, ripped Lafayette 53-37. Ashanti Thomas had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Generals, who hit only 29 percent of their shots and turned over the ball 28 times.

■ Oney Harrison had 14 points and Katie Pippen had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Tates Creek past Clark County 45-36. Freshman Sandra Skinner had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cardinals.

■ Katie Prater scored 12 points, including the 1,600th of her career, and added 15 rebounds as host Wolfe County beat Powell County 54-52 in double overtime. Prater hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left to tie the game in regulation. With a minute left in the second overtime, Cassie Spencer hit two free throws to give Wolfe the lead, and Powell could not respond.

The state announced Thursday that four companies have received more than $787,000 in stimulus funds to replace inefficient lighting with more energy-efficient fixtures.



The companies receiving the funds are: Montaplast of North America Inc. in Frankfort, $280,500; Florida Tile Inc. in Lawrenceburg, $162,500; General Electric Co., Aviation Division, in Madisonville, $200,000; and Sekisui Specialty Chemicals America LLC in Calvert City, $144,170.



The funds will pay for 50 percent of the project costs, and the companies will provide the rest, according to a news release. The state anticipates up to $3.35 million in additional stimulus funds being awarded to Kentucky companies in coming months, the release said.
