Just as technology is evolving reporting of news is evolving too

Is it entertainment or journalism

Consumers actively engage with content. News is just one

Two sets of quality criteria: 1. is this transmittable; 2. is this really what they say it is.

The future: professional journalists using CitJ techniques

Pro: Better shot, better edited, better produced than a CitJ

Instead of drifting toward new methods of journalism, shouldn't we set a course for them?

Social media breaks the monopoly of information distribution by traditional broadcasters

Opportunities for broadcasters - Interactivity: additional dist channels, new target groups, direct comm with audience

Support for journalists: alt info sources, quick audience feedback, cross media promo, multimedia presence on social net

Using social media to cover stories: additional reporting tools and new coverage formats (twitter, blog, etc)

Moderation vs Censorship: define use guidelines, moderate the discussion, quality control by editors

Challenges: Copyright issues

Journalistic standards on social media platforms

Code of ethics: back to high-end and truthful journalism

As a trusted guide for the audience

Reporting on camera is a one way activity. On social media platforms it is two way.

Guidelines are necessary for the use of social media journalism

UGC adds value but you must maintain quality checks.

UGC is not always reliable.

Broadcasters utilising social media must provide high-end content

Amused to see the Pirate Bay listed as social media site. Very true.

Social Media talk at #broadcastasia10. Talking about putting photos online.

Consumers will have the power over privacy online.

Watch your marketing dollars. Consumers don't trust marketers.

Must listen and learn from consumers. Then you can communicate with them.

Involve your consumers in your brand

The beauty of it is that with this rig you don't need to specifically light each situation. Just erect the mobile screen, the light and the LED ring and you're good to go. You can use either green or blue LEDs to create a green or blue screen.

Creating Reality Television in Asia

Riaz Mehta, who brought The Contender to Asia, talked about making Reality Television in Asia.

Creating US Reality Series on Asian budgets.

Don't have the luxury of $1-2million per episode. It would be a good deal if you got $1-2million for the entire series.

Making local versions of successful reality series have proven revenue streams.

One obstabcle in Asian Reality series is having talent with an Asia-wide appeal. Asians tend to be more reserved.

Making the show

Biggest challenge is finding funding.

Important to secure International expertise and combine that with local production talent.

Post-production is key.

Editors need to be world-class.

The Business of TV

No point making TV unless it makes commercial sense.

Must be profitable up-front but important to deal with the back-end as well (merchandising, club-memberships, etc) to cover between seasons.

Lots of gotchas with licencing.

Licensing a American series, get an American lawyer.

When you buid talent be careful they don't hold you hostage later down the track.
