Only the most naive elector could have considered either sides arguments to be representative of a mature view of the most critical piece of missing Australian infrastructure.

Australia's needs for robust Infrastructure Plans are unclear. It would be easier to say dissarray as it appears Steve Conroy's stewardship has only only halted the backwards slide that we suffered under the Previous Federal government's 11 years.
Clearly technologists have dropped the ball in most respects as modern human activity is destined to be wireless. In other areas of human endevour we have consiously and diligently pushed marginal technology into the mainstream and NOW is Wireless communications time.
Carriers are straining under their partner's business models, as The Big 3 Motorola Nokia and New Boy Apple fight for the palm space spending zone.

Australia's Competition watchdog the Austrlaian Competition and Consumer Commission ( akin the the USA's Department of Justice Antitrust Division) has announced that a recent decision to enforce matching HARDWARE warranty and Carrier Plan terms. this is a fundamental shift in the this arena as consumers are faced commonly with longer term plans than the warranty offered.

"The ACCC believes the handset is an integral part of the package and if it fails through no fault of the consumer, the company is responsible for replacement or repair."

Historically the device and the connection have co-existed as parallel elements under the contractual umbrella of the Carriers Plan but now they are inextricably to be linked.

Prediciton?

Prices will rise to cover the cost of broken devices (especially iPads)

Carriers will stop Offering Subsidised high value Phones

Task and communication overload compresses the day into a series of value exchanges that often leaves little time for consideration.
I've just spent/ invested / or wasted 40 minutes of valuable time catching up on some todo's that have sat unprioritised in the back of my mindspace for some months. I had some areas in both text and Visual realms to investigate.
Don't laugh, I finally had time to look at tiny URL service and of course to test it I scanned some of my subscribed spam for a long URL and created this BIG tiny url http://tinyurl.com/fluxcapacitor
The irony of tiny url's is that they let you make a url that can be BIGGER than the original. This means it can carry its own meaning BEFORE you click. In a world of compression perhaps a longer URL could be good?
In the visual realm I installed GoogleTalk video Conference Client on my XP platform. I await a like minded soul to try it out. I also spent some time looking at I believe will be the next interface trend, CoolIRIS. It's a big leap and will bridge us into the gesture based communications realm easily. I even found a feeling within, a rare moment of connection with some propaganda from a recent AU_US political meeting have a look and tell me the world is the same now that two leaders let their staff post "happy-snaps" on Flickr?
http://tinyurl.com/happysnapschangetheworld

TweetStorm

I think the Tsunami thing is over now
I'm just tweeted,
oh hang on this isn't tweetland its Blogger land !

Tweeting goes Jpeg

Prioritising from your in box is a nightmare I live so Late last year I declared a Triage system and have since taken some time to look outside my in box for the next tsunami of todo's. I wanted some way of selectively publishing my status AND subscribing to others. In a way I already use Sametime, Facebook, Linked-in and Skype's status facilities for different parts of my world but as it is the overhead is just too much to keep them in sync.

I found of course Tweeting via Twitter. Late last qtr in 2008 I joined the flock and have to say found the experience a little less than productive. I was looking I expect for a way to dynamically link all of my disparate status's into one interface. Its yet to come but in an immature niche there is always a fast starter. Tracking your world via RSS Feed is one thing, following the flock and tweeting is much more interactive, but now we have a new dimension Twitpic!

Simple It adds Pictures were 140 Characters could convey some basics Twitpic fill in the gaps. How Deliciously simple.

In a few short years Twitter text will be a little like the scaffolding that surrounded the pyramids - GONE Twitpic could not have existed without twitter and will by my reckoning become the next killer app. Even FEDEX and UPS will have to TWIPIC parcel locations lets See if Noah Everett can survive the ride?

Video Presence Goes Mobile

Call Centres will shift to Video Centres as Mobile Video Proximity devices are flooding the market, 2009 will make video calling a primetime facility. As the technology for automated voice assisted routing and call hand off accelerates we'll see the hegemony of the telco and comms equipment providers fall by the wayside.

What's it all mean ?

Voice Services that automatically route and provide personal least cost routing of calls is now a reality.
However, the reality is that this is a market so new it's almost hard to understand. The only way to describe it is that our good old telephone handset addiction is coming to an end. The world of Proximity is approaching enabled by the combination of these emerging technologies.

Will my 8 week old daughter understand call forwarding ? and Voicemail ? I think not. The next wave of Toddlers will expect that their communications will be Full DUPLEX multi-channel and essentially chargefree.

We will become immersed in sea of talk, I hope we teach our youngest to SPEAK not just talk.

Travelling on line

A Recent discussion with a worldly traveller yeilded this little gem:

"Here's my Tip for business and pleasure travellers with the ususal host of electronics power adapters and chargers.

Before Leaving
Identify all of your auto-switching power supply equipment, (leave the others behind)
Buy a cheap (and therefore lightweight) 4 port power Board (AU$3.99) that you can afford to lose or ditch if space becomes an issue on the return leg.

On arriving at the DEparting Airport
Dont Forget!
When you get to your outbound airport or destination locale buy a universal and usually ubiquitous power adapter ($15 US ) to connect the power board's 4 into one hotel/room socket.

On arrival at your Destination
Go Crazy and use all of your gear, and IF you run the batteries Flat !
