The 'courtesy call' service is for frail and older people who are being discharged from hospital and may need information, advice or help to live independently at home.

Hospital staff will refer patients by phoning the service on the day the patient is allowed home, or by giving the patient a booklet of information.

A spokeswoman for Age Concern said: "This new service has been going for a few weeks and has already ensured that many older people have been discharged home with the support they need.

"The relevant Age Concern branch will contact the patient within 48 hours to discuss their needs, provide information, and suggest services or a home visit."

One such service, the Road to Recovery scheme operated in Spelthorne, provides free help for six weeks with chores such as housework and shopping as well as accompanying clients to appointments, while they recover.

An OAP has received repeated phone calls from James Bond fanatics because her phone number ends in 007.

The number appears on various websites advertising The James Bond International Fan Club because it once belonged to the Clubs' creator, a Bond enthusiast who logged his details on the web so that fellow fans could contact him.

The number was redistributed by BT to an 82 year-old widow almost two years ago when she moved into a new home.

Since then she has received a number of calls from fans attempting to find out more about their favourite Martini-drinking, Secret Service agent.

The pensioners son who visits his mother to do odd jobs around the house said: "I organised a number for my mother when she moved in, we saw this one and though 'oh 007 that'll be a good one.'

Now the pensioner who lives in Woking, gets sporadic calls from fans but has a Live and Let Dial attitude.

The woman's son said: "They are always very polite and apologetic when they realise they've got the wrong number.

"I've answered the phone to some of them before, I actually quite enjoy speaking to them.

"They are interesting, although I'm not sure if that is the word!

"My mother hasn't had a call in a while, I think she's had between 10 and 15 in total.

"She's elderly and on her own, for her it's someone to speak to.

"She doesn't mind, she prefers it to tele-sales."

A spokesman from BT said: "BT does provide numbers that have been used in the past.

"However we do try to ensure that there has been a reasonable amount of time between users to minimise any chance of inconvenience for new owner.

"We could of course change the number if this customer was unhappy, but we are delighted to hear she is enjoying talking to these occasional callers."

The phone number appears on at least three websites, one of which is Creative Match, a site that allows users to upload their own advertisements.

An employee identified the user as a man who used to live in Addlestone for a number of years.

The employee said: "His page was created in 2005,

"He hasn't let us know what he is doing.

"It is up to the user to inform us of any changes to their details."

Creative Match has now removed the number from their site.

Businesses in Chertsey town centre may have lost thousands of pounds after a power cut forced them to close early on Monday October 12.

Electricity went off in the town at 6.45pm and residents in neighbouring Addlestone also lost power for a few minutes.

But in Chertsey, the power did not come back on until 9.30pm meaning restaurants and pubs had to close their doors early and ask customers to leave, costing them hundreds of pounds in lost business.

A waiter, who was working in Ask restaurant in London Street at the time, but did not want to be named, said: "We were lucky it was Monday night and not a weekend, so we weren't that busy.

"But no restaurant wants to have to turn away customers, or to ask them to finish their meals and leave.

"All of the bars and restaurants will have lost thousands of pounds with customers having to be sent away again."

Businesses throughout Chertsey were affected, with Sainsbury's and Co-op also having to close their doors early because the till systems were not working.

Nathan Hart, 27, of Galsworthy Road, Chertsey, was drinking in the Crown Hotel in London Street after work.

He said: "Everything went black and people were a bit confused about what was happening.

"I'd only been there about half an hour when we were all told that we would have to drink up, because the pub would have to close.

"People were getting kicked out of pubs, restaurants and shops all through the town, so the streets were a bit busier than normal.

"It certainly put a dampener on my night, and it seems hard to stomach that the power had to be off for three hours. Surely something could have been done before that."

EDF Energy were unavailable for comment as the Herald went to press.

Station Road was closed from the roundabout at Tesco to the level crossing gates on Friday October 9 morning, after an articulated lorry delivering to the supermarket got stuck at the entrance to Victory Park Road.

Police were called at about 9.30am and the road was closed for more than an hour while the lorry was cleared.

Georgie Carpenter, 19, who was passing at the time, said: "The traffic was all built up through Addlestone, and was much worse than usual.

"People couldn't get along anywhere past the Tesco roundabout, and when I walked past there was a big lorry stuck half way in Victory Park Road.

"It was quite funny to see, but I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck in the traffic behind it."

A police spokesman confirmed that the road was shut by officers in one direction between the station and the main roundabout for about an hour while the lorry was moved.

The African Children's Choir that visits Addlestone every year cannot afford to come due to changes in health and safety laws.

Jubilee High School in School Lane normally hosts the choir, holding performances for students, teachers and parents to enjoy.

But with the new child protection agenda meaning every adult who might be involved with the children in the choir needing a check by the Criminal Records Bureau, the charities behind the Ugandan choir face a bill of £18,000.

Gareth Balch, principal of Jubilee High School is taking fundraising into his own hands and plans to cycle around the Isle of Wight, and is calling on parents and friends of the school to help.

He said: "Sadly our developing culture of health and safety, and the new child protection has led to the cancellation of the African Children's Choir tour.

"Unfortunately the charities behind the group, the Molly and Paul Foundation and the Pearl of Africa Children's Choir Charity, faced a huge demand for CRB checks of every adult who might come into contact with the choir members.

"The bill was estimated at £18,000, which the charities could not afford, so the visas were refused, but only after they had already been paid for.

"My thanks go to a group of parents who have made a suggestion to support the choir with suitable presents which can be boxed up and sent to Uganda.

"And as well as me cycling around the Isle of Wight, and aiming to raise £100 by doing so, we are looking for 99 more adults to pledge to raise £100 each to help the choir.

"My hope is that we can raise the money to help bring the choir to England later this year."

Mr Balch has already placed a box in reception for donations of gifts, including pen sets, maths sets, calculators, glasses and writing books.

Anyone interested in helping out should contact the school directly on 01932 884 800.

A Picasso print worth £5,000 is up for grabs in a raffle being run by a convict-turned-artist and charity worker.

Dean Stalham, 45, from Addlestone, served 21 months in prison for handling stolen goods - including art work by Matisse - and while he was inside developed a talent for writing and painting.

He will now be putting on three plays in London on October 22 and 23 to raise money for Art Saves Lives, his organisation to help get convicts into art, and will be selling raffle tickets for the chance to win various art prizes including the Picasso self portrait.

Mr Stalham said: "I had the chance to turn my life around and I think it's important that other people should have the same chances I did.

"When you go into prison, it's easy to get into a downward spiral, but what Art Saves Lives does is offers the training and the platform for people who have been in prison to be able to get into art and show their art to other people.

"And most people are very receptive of the idea.

"I went round asking businesses to donate items for the raffle and there was such a good response. The Picasso was a real surprise."

The print, signed and valued at £5,000 was donated to Art Saves Lives by the Globe Gallery in Church Street, Weybridge, and there is also a rare photograph of Kate Moss.

The art will be on display at the gallery in Stoke Newington Library, London, alongside the three critically acclaimed plays that are being performed.

Mr Stalham added: "The plays are being put on to get people interested in what we are doing and we will also have music by Billy Bragg.

"We will be selling raffle tickets on these two days, and hopefully we will generate a lot of interest and money, enough to be able to put on an exhibition in February.

"Basically, somebody could be getting a real bargain, by getting a Picasso print for the price of a raffle ticket."

The raffle will be drawn in February at Mr Stalham's next exhibition of work by him and other ex-convicts.

Entry to the plays and exhibition this month is free, and the shows start at 6pm.

For more information, email one of Mr Stalham's colleagues at tilly.brooke@hotmail.com or catflannery@gmail.com.
