A second theft of a remembrance day item was stolen in Staines at the weekend.

Surrey councillor Denise Turner-Stewart, put up two Union Jack flags on railings in Stainash Parade, Staines, and Woodthorpe Road, Ashford on Saturday November night, only to find one of them missing the next day.

The theft follows an incident on Monday November 2 when a Royal British Legion poppy appeal box was taken from Spelthorne Council's offices in Knowle Green, Staines, after it was chained to a desk.

Mrs Turner-Stewart said: "I went over to Woodthorpe Road on Sunday night and found it missing. I was just trying to pay respect to people who have died and someone comes along and steals it. It is unbelievable."

Mrs Turner-Stewart put them up to show respect for the fallen, because 20 flags were supposed to be put up in Edinburgh Drive, Stainash Parade, and Victoria Parade, all in Staines, but were delayed because of insurance issues.

The police have now issued a photo of the man they would like to question in regard to the stolen collection box from Spelthorne's offices last week.

Detectives are keen to speak to Matthew Bennett, 19, of Bowes Road, Staines, and members of the public are requested not to approach the man but contact Surrey Police instead.

He is still believed to be in the area.

The police are currently going through CCTV footage into the incident, but it is not understood how much money was in the box.

Spelthorne council Leader John Packman says: 'It is almost incredible that someone would want to steal money that goes to support ex servicemen and women from conflicts all over the world. Fortunately, in this instance, we have clear pictures of this criminal and he can expect to be brought to account very soon".

Anyone who has seen Bennett or with any information on his current location should contact Detective Sergeant Nick Hemmant CID on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference SL/09/8933.

The Herald and News would like it to be known that Surrey Police do have access to social networking sites while investigating crime.

The titles' sister paper, the Staines Informer, reported last week that an investigation into brick wall vandalism in Lower Sunbury was being hampered as officers couldn't get access to social networking site Facebook because of an internal ban.

But Spelthorne acting neighbourhood inspector Rebecca Kempster has stated that the force can access the site, along with others such as auction page eBay, to investigate or prevent crime.

The Herald and News is happy to clarify these points.

Inspector Kempster said: "Surrey Police want to clarify that we can get access to Facebook and other sites when investigating crime."

The investigation is still ongoing into the 20 incidents of vandalism in Elizabeth Gardens and Saxonbury Avenue which occurred on Monday 19 and 26 October.

It is believed children are being blamed for the thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Anyone with information should call the police on 0845 125 2222 if they know of anything.

The residents of St Martin's Court, in Kingston Crescent, Ashford, witnessed staff from housing association A2Dominion, contractor Inspace, and Barclays Bank, install a gazebo, a water feature, pergolas, and plants as part of A2's first resident's week.

The area of land was previously a patch of grass outside the sheltered housing scheme for elderly people, and residents have expressed their joy at having somewhere to relax.

Daphne Downie said: "I have been watching all the volunteers working really hard this week and they've done a fantastic job. The garden will really cheer everyone up, so we are all very grateful to A2Dominion for organising the make-over."

The make-over was sponsored by Inspace, Barclays Bank, and Notcutts garden centre.
The resident's week ran Monday October 26 to Sunday 31, which saw other activities take place to encourage its residents to get more involved in their community.

Pat Hollingsworth, A2's regional operations director, said: "We've been delighted with the response we've had to our first ever resident's week. The communal garden at St Martin's Court now looks fantastic, and the volunteers have really done a great job in improving the area for residents.

"We hope the work carried out will enable residents to enjoy the garden all year round."

Police are being hampered in an investigation into offences of brick walls being destroyed because of an IT issue.

Over the past two weeks, more than 20 cemented brick walls have been completely or partly smashed in Sunna Gardens, Elizabeth Gardens, Saxonbury Avenue and Kingsmead Avenue, Lower Sunbury, which Surrey Police believe could be an internet fad posted on social networking site Facebook.

But due to a block not allowing officers to access the site from their computers, the police have had to pursue other means of investigation.

Spelthorne Neighbourhood acting Inspector Rebecca Kempster, said: "Over the past few weeks we have had a lot of criminal damage to walls, where they are being kicked in.

"We are talking about twenty offences in two weeks, and we think it could be a Facebook trend, although we are not sure, but we can't access the site, so we are trying to find another way to view it.

"They are doing thousands of pounds worth of damage, and as they are brick walls they must be doing it with a lot of force."

The incidents happened on consecutive Monday nights, on October 26 and 19, so police believe they are being committed by the same offenders, and although a wall was destroyed in Vicarage Road, Sunbury on Sunday (1), due to its distance from the other offences, it is not believed to be linked.

Inspector Kempster said: "The local officers are still carrying out enquiries."

The offenders responsible for the damage on October 19 are three youths described as being between 12 and 14, tall, of slim build, and riding bicycles.

Any witnesses to any of the offences or anyone with information is being asked to contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of theft of a car after failing to stop by the police during a motoring campaign.

Surrey Police held an operation as part of their year-long Drive SMART campaign with Surrey County Council to cut down on anti-social behaviour around Spelthorne on Friday October 23.

Just after 9pm a silver Ford Galaxy failed to stop for policemen, and following a large search the vehicle was located on the hard shoulder of the M25 near Junction 14.

A 68-year-old woman from Cardiff and a 20-year-old man from Leatherhead were arrested for suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police.

They were both released on bail until November 24 while investigations continue.

Inspector Chris Colley, of the roads policing unit (RCU), said: "Anti-social driving, such as tail gaiting, speeding, and drunk driving, is the most common issue raised at neighbourhood meetings and the recent operation involved five unmarked roads policing unit cars with a roads policing driver and an officer from the local safer neighbourhood team on board."

Officers from the RCU and SCC stopped a total of 37 vehicles and issued eleven fixed penalty notices for various offences, including using a mobile phone while driving, having no MOT, failing to wear a seatbelt, and speeding.

One person was arrested for drink driving and seven drivers were given verbal warnings for a range of offences.

Anti-social behaviour on a Staines estate has led one councillor to start a youth club for the children in the area.

Denise Turner-Stewart, who is the Surrey County Councillor for Staines South and Ashford West ward has been in talks with Laleham Methodist Church, in Edinburgh Drive, to set up a seven night a week youth club for kids to go to.

She has been speaking to the young people of the area with the police, in a bid to give them something to do and to cut down on graffiti, vandalism, and animal cruelty.

Mrs Turner-Stewart said: "We spoke to the young people and asked them what they wanted to do and the Methodist church has come forward offering us their place.

"They said they would like cooking lessons and a place to play music, and the girls said they would like hairdressing classes, so we are looking for volunteers to make it happen."

Community workers from Surrey Probation are due to begin painting the church hall this week (next week) with £700 worth of equipment paid for by Ms Turner-Stewart.

Church workers have already cleared the graffiti off the building, but Ms Turner-Stewart has said the actual youth club probably wouldn't be up and running until Spring next year.

She said: "We have asked the kids that if we are going to do this they will need to stick with it.

"There's always something bad going on around here, and recently, kids were catapulting pigeons off people's roofs.

"There is a community centre in Leacroft, Staines, and Kennilworth Road, Ashford, but they are quite far apart and quite a lot of the kids aren't going to travel there. Hopefully this community centre will give them something to do."

Mrs Turner-Stewart also hopes to put on cookoffs and sporting events, and hopes to have a few trial events put on at Christmas time to gauge how much of a success it can be.

She said: "It is going to take a while, but people are always going on about the trouble, so I would just like them to know that something is in the process."

An extremely rare brown shrike was spotted on Staines Moor prompting thousands of birdwatchers to drop everything and flock to the beauty spot over the last ten days to catch a view of the small brown spectacle. Herald & News reporter Russell Butt donned his wellies and grabbed his binoculars to see what all the fuss was about.

There's not many things more frustrating than when your holiday plans go awry.
So imagine the surprise of one small, brown bird who should be heading from Siberia to South East Asia for the winter, but has found himself perched atop a hawthorn bush in Staines.

Imagine its further surprise to instantly achieve celebrity status on arrival, with more camera lenses being pointed at it than Kate Moss gets stumbling out of a Soho nightclub.

In the ten days the brown shrike has been on Staines Moor, thousands of birdwatchers, 'twitchers' to use the vernacular, have traversed the country to catch a glimpse of this innocuous looking fellow - only the seventh recorded sighting in the UK.

I've always been a nature lover, and in particular, a bird lover, but I'm not a fan of the idea of 'twitching' - where birdwatchers travel hundreds of miles at a moment's notice to glimpse a rare bird and tick it off their 'list'.

I still get the same buzz just seeing a robin in the garden. But the pull of knowing this rare vagrant was just a few miles from the office was too much and I decided to try and see it for myself.

I got up two hours earlier than normal and left my Wimbledon home in the pitch black, genuinely excited at the prospect seeing this rarity. I can't remember the last really rare animal I saw, but I know my brothers still relish reminding me of the time I saw a goshawk, the king of woodland raptors, in the garden of our Hampshire home.

More than twenty years they have been reminding me, "You remember that time you saw a wood pigeon and thought it was a goshawk?"

It wouldn't shun my enthusiasm. I entered Staines Moor from the south passing under the A30 and immediately felt at ease. A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) the moor is a wildlife haven and a place of tranquil beauty.

Approaching the River Colne, a shrill piping noise was followed by a silhouette darting low and straight over the water. Kingfisher. Glorious.

The sun was coming up behind the embankment of the King George VI reservoir and a pair of kestrels quartered the field backlit by orange clouds. Barely on the moor and already I felt that I had could go home happy, even if the shrike was a no-show.

As I neared the spot I had seen marked on an online birding forum as the shrike's chosen hang-out, I caught up with a lone birder heading the same way. Bob Warden from Ottershaw had been birding in Norfolk, when he got a text message alerting him of the shrike's appearance on the moor. The irony of him being on the other side of the country birdwatching with one of the UK's rarest birds just miles from his doorstop didn't even occur to him.

"I have been here every day since it arrived," he explained. "It normally shows around 8am"

It was 7.50am, I didn't have long to wait. As we walked Bob told me about the other birds he has seen on the moor, short-eared owls, barn owls, great grey shrike, a water pipet, a bluethroat and his affection for the place was evident.

We reached the spot, and as if the bird's wake-up time was well established, five or six more twitchers arrived and set up their spotting scopes as it turned 8am. Bob was just explaining which tree the bird favoured, when one of them interrupted, "It's there now isn't it?"

The rustle of waxed jacket sleeves as six pairs of 'bins' are raised to expectant eyes. I didn't have binoculars, but could see something greyish, and fluffy in the middle of the bush. Camera shutters clicked around me, someone phoned a friend, and Bob set up his scope and offered me a view.

And there it was.

Hunched up, fluffed up from the cold and viewing us with seeming bemusement. A dark brown mask across its eyes, with pale greyish white outline, and long russety tail. He was actually quite a handsome fellow.

The black glossy bill with a slight hook at the tip was, Bob assured me from his own observations, perfectly suited to plucking bees, wasps and other insects from plants.

Two of the birders, one of them from Stoke, had driven overnight from Penzance in Cornwall just to see this great little bird. They weren't sure how long they would stay there, but I have a feeling they remained long after the cold had got the best of me.

I was told at one point last weekend, more than 500 people had amassed on the river bank.

Another birder followed me towards Staines. He had to catch a bus back to work having told his boss his car had broken down that morning - he didn't feel that he could justify his absence with 'I went to look at a rare bird'.

He asked me if it was true that they were planning to build a railway line through the moor. I told him about the Airtrack scheme and how it might affect the moor and it became apparent that this little bird could become quite a significant weapon in the Airtrack protestors' arsenal.

Staines Moor clearly is a gem for nature lovers. So much so that of all the places it could have stopped, the 'Staines shrike' as it has become affectionately known, has chosen to stay here a while.

A woman in her 60s was dragged out of her burning home alive by her next door neighbour on Monday morning.

The incident started at 3.47am in Windemere Close, Stanwell, after neighbours witnessed the fire starting in her garage before spreading to the roof.

Giovanni Gianfriglia, 52, is being hailed for entering the woman's house, finding her at the bottom of the stairs, and dragging her out while her top kept catching fire.

The woman, known as Maria, was taken to St Peter's Hospital with serious injuries, including burns to her arms and legs, and her husband Michael was taken after suffering from smoke inhalation.

Fire engines from Staines, Sunbury, Egham, Chertsey, Camberley, Esher, and Guildford attended the scene, along with an aerial ladder, and worked until 7.50am putting the fire under control.

The cause is still under a joint investigation by Staines CID and the fire service.

Residents have spoken of their shock of seeing the fire, and have praised two men, Giovanni Gianfriglia, 52, and Mark Biggs, 39, for rescuing the woman, known as Maria, from her burning home.

Mr Biggs said: "I was woken up at about 3.45am because a next door neighbour named Michael was banging on the door shouting for us to help Maria. Adrenaline took over and I rushed out, but Giovanni had already dragged Maria from the bottom of the stairs to the door. She was lying on the doorstep and I could see the flames in her hallway, so we dragged her outside."

Nicholas Ross, 19, of Viola Avenue, was also awakened by the fire in the early morning. He said: "It was the first time I had seen a fire, and the flames were quite high. The smoke was black and it was quite scary because I thought it was going to spread to my house."

Rhys Jones, 19, of Windermere Close, said: "I came out and saw Giovanni and Mark pulling Maria out on to the driveway, and I didn't believe what was happening. You do not expect a fire at four in the morning. Every time the flames went out they started back up again. It only comes to life when you a see fire on first hand, because when you see it on the news, you think a fire can't last for four hours, but it really can."

Fire engines from Staines, Sunbury, Egham, Chertsey, Camberley, Esher, and Guildford attended the scene and worked until 7.50am to bring the fire under control.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference P09335011, or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
