EMPTY wards at Cobham Cottage Hospital could be turned into a centre for rape victims in nine months time residents and members of The Friends were told on Friday (November 6).

Inspector Craig Jones, development manager for the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (Sarc), a safe location where victims of rape and serious sexual assault can receive medical care and counselling spoke at the Friends of Cobham Cottage Hospital's annual general meeting.

Cobham Cottage Hospital, in Portsmouth Road, has been suggested as an ideal spot to locate the centre by Surrey Primary Care Trust and Surrey Police.

It will be used to provide forensic medicals, counselling, testing for sexually transmitted infections, and a direct interview pathway. It will be provided for the whole of surrey.

Inspector Jones said: "We have been speaking to the NHS since February about a Sarc which is known as a one stop facility for victims.

"There are substantial figures to prove that the number of victims justify the need for a Sarc in Surrey. Other police force areas have Sarcs so we are behind.

"We on average anticipate 200 adults and 50 children per annum to the centre. We anticipate starting work on centre within six to nine months time."

Acting Chair Howard MacDonald said: "We fully support this and feel we have a moral obligation to be more involved.

"We have the funds, which have frequently been offered but refused by the hospital."

The Sarc will also in the future have it's own children's unit which The Friends have agreed to help kit out.

After the meeting Ken Purssey, committee member said: "I am aware some residents are concerned about the centre but where were they? The turn-out of this year's annual general meeting was appalling."

Councillors David Tipping, Jan Fuller, John Butcher and Maria Odone, attended the meeting and so did Ian Taylor MP.

Former chairwoman Louise Staples stepped down from her position after 26 years and was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Jan Fuller on behalf of the committee. Mrs Staples has become group president.

Three vehicles were involved in a collision on the southbound carriageway of the A3 near Cobham, on Monday (November 9) at about 4.10pm.

Firefighters from Walton, Painshill and Esher attended the pile-up where one grab lorry had turned on its roof on the carriageway. Immediately after this a Ford Focus collided with a white Toyota 4X4.

The driver of the grab lorry was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor cuts and bruises and another driver was taken to Kingston Hospital with imjuries not thought to be life-threatening.

The carriageway was closed until 5.20pm.

First reports indicated people were trapped in the vehicles but it was later confirmed that all occupants of the vehicles had been removed safely to the care of ambulance crews for treatment.

A tipper lorry equipped with a grabber arm assisted emergency services in trying to remove the overturned vehicle, but eventually a specialist winch was used.

There were massive tailbacks in both directions throughout the rush hour period.

Firefighter at Walton, Stef Morley said: "All three emergency services worked well together toward the safe and successful conclusion of this incident.
"An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing."

Halloween fever took over ACS Cobham on Friday ,October 30, as students dressed up as ghouls and devils for the school's annual spooky festivities.

In the afternoon, younger pupils of the international school, in Portsmouth Road, took
part in a parade dressed in full Halloween costume while watched by the rest of the school.

In the evening, the eighth annual trick or trunk event took place in the grounds, where families dress up the trunks of their cars where children could collect sweets.

As well as this, Halloween games, bouncy castles and a light dinner was provided for the 1,400 people that attended.

There was also a haunted house on display, which had been made by the school's International Baccalaureate drama students.

The event was organised by parent volunteers from the parent school organisation.

Principal of ACS Cobham, Lucy Chapman, said: "The children very much enjoy taking part in the Halloween parade, the costumes are always imaginative and fun.

"Many teachers always join in as well, with great enthusiasm."

Chairperson of the Trick of Treat event, Tammy Hachmer, said: "Trick or treating does not seem to be as common a tradition in England, as it is in North America, and with just under half of ACS Cobham students coming from North America the students and families are keen to celebrate Halloween and share the experience with friends from other countries."
