Hundreds of poppy-wearers observed two-minutes silence at one of the most picturesque memorials in the county for Remembrance Day today (Sunday, November 8).

At 11am, more than two hundred people made no peep as Reveille piped out and filled the grounds of the Royal Air Forces Memorial on Cooper's Hill, Englefield Green, where the names of 20,000 service men who lost their lives fighting for their country are etched on its walls.

Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Paul Tuley and chief executive of Runnymede Borough Council, Paul Turrell, were guests at the morning service, which attracts people from far and wide to come and pay their respects, lay wreathes and remember their friends and loved ones who died in combat.

Flight lieutenant Denis Evans, made the trip to Englefield Green from Watford, to remember his comrades from 117 Squadron, which was based in Hemswell, Lincolnshire. The ex-Lancaster pilot has been coming to the service here on Cooper's Hill for more than two decades.

He said: "It's always an emotional time, coming here.

"I usually come here and meet up with friends from my squadron, but there's only about 20 of us now - there was 150 of us orginally."

During the poignant service, special guest, Squadron Leader Jimmy James of 216 Squadron, made a couple of readings.

Sergeant James had been pilot of a Bristol Bombay transport aircraft in Alamein, North Africa in `1942. His aircraft was shot down by Germans who had targeted his prized cargo - General William Gott - Churchill's newly appointed general in charge of operations in North Africa.

All but three of the aircraft's crew were killed, including General Gott, when the unarmed plane crash landed in the desert and was strafed by Messersmitt fighter planes.

"I have been trying to track down the other two who survived the crash," he explained, "But I found one of them on the wall here a few years back - I had been looking for him since 1942."

"I'm just there as a guest today, but it is very good to see such a nice crowd of people here."

Sgt James walked seven miles across the desert following the crash, before being picked up by an Arab who rode him back to safety on his camel.

At the end of the service, Mayor of Runnymede, Cllr Paul Tuley, said he was delighted with turn out that morning.

He said: "I am very pleased that it was once again a very well attended ceremony.
"The wreath-laying really is a very moving thing too, and it was nice to be a part of it."

By system, I mean "a way of doing things" - At the moment we are under the banner of democracy - which since 1215, Runnymede and all that, we have believed that the top man would listen to the people, not be a dictator, but order things as per the wishes of the majority.(Well sort of) Today we have arrived at the point where, our top man, we have discovered, is not fit for purpose. In the real world, idiot top man would be found another place before he can do too much damage. Our political history tells us that it is very difficult to rid ourselves of a wrong 'un,once they have been given the nod by HRH. We need to change things so that we (the voter) is given a say, via a referendum, or similar. Such changes must be made in Parliament, which is a turkeys voting for Christmas operation, so the chances of expenses-mad politicians giving themselves the sack, are slim. The writing on the wall calls for change. Intelligent and wise politicians will see that the attitude of "Up Yours" from today's incumbents will lead voters to look to

other Parties - UKIP, BNP, Greens etc, to see if they are any different from the old lags who have made such a mess of trying to run this country. It is not only the anger of voters over the expenses that should worry sitting MP's, it is the attitude of most who regard parliament as a place to go for self-satisfaction and self-promotion. The BPI are fed up with these types. The fringe Parties who are a serious threat to the status quo, will eagerly demonstrate, when elected, that they are grateful to the voters for the trust given to them.
They will not like to be seen as money grabbers, they realise, thanks to the stupidity of the present members, the keys to power are within their grasp. Times are a changing!

Last night on BBC TV, the oxygen of publicity was fully focused on bully boy Nick Griffin, the Leader of BNP. Here, was the show that Mark Thompson, was asked to defend his decision to allow such publicity, for this far right upstart. Without the usual supporting cast of heavies to create an atmosphere of fear, we all quickly realised that this Leader, had been persuaded that his role for the night, was to be the joker! Not realising that this mad ploy would only make matters worse, the silly man started to giggle, laugh and clap at every opportunity. Serious questions from very annoyed people were treated with joke answers. This golden opportunity to get converts was completely turned on its head. This display of childish nonsense, revealed the man for what he is, a shallow vacuous empty vessel without a sound idea in his head. So what of the BBC and Mark Thompson - were they right to put this man on show to the nation? Yes, Yes and Yes again. Thank you BBC - Who will be next in the hot seat?

In the ten days the brown shrike has been on Staines Moor, thousands of birdwatchers, 'twitchers' to use the vernacular, have traversed the country to catch a glimpse of this innocuous looking fellow - only the seventh recorded sighting in the UK.

I've always been a nature lover, and in particular, a bird lover, but I'm not a fan of the idea of 'twitching' - where birdwatchers travel hundreds of miles at a moment's notice to glimpse a rare bird and tick it off their 'list'.

I still get the same buzz just seeing a robin in the garden. But the pull of knowing this rare vagrant was just a few miles from the office was too much and I decided to try and see it for myself.

I got up two hours earlier than normal and left my Wimbledon home in the pitch black, genuinely excited at the prospect seeing this rarity. I can't remember the last really rare animal I saw, but I know my brothers still relish reminding me of the time I saw a goshawk, the king of woodland raptors, in the garden of our Hampshire home.

More than twenty years they have been reminding me, "You remember that time you saw a wood pigeon and thought it was a goshawk?"

It wouldn't shun my enthusiasm. I entered Staines Moor from the south passing under the A30 and immediately felt at ease. A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) the moor is a wildlife haven and a place of tranquil beauty.

Approaching the River Colne, a shrill piping noise was followed by a silhouette darting low and straight over the water. Kingfisher. Glorious.

The sun was coming up behind the embankment of the King George VI reservoir and a pair of kestrels quartered the field backlit by orange clouds. Barely on the moor and already I felt that I had could go home happy, even if the shrike was a no-show.

As I neared the spot I had seen marked on an online birding forum as the shrike's chosen hang-out, I caught up with a lone birder heading the same way. Bob Warden from Ottershaw had been birding in Norfolk, when he got a text message alerting him of the shrike's appearance on the moor. The irony of him being on the other side of the country birdwatching with one of the UK's rarest birds just miles from his doorstop didn't even occur to him.

"I have been here every day since it arrived," he explained. "It normally shows around 8am"

It was 7.50am, I didn't have long to wait. As we walked Bob told me about the other birds he has seen on the moor, short-eared owls, barn owls, great grey shrike, a water pipet, a bluethroat and his affection for the place was evident.

We reached the spot, and as if the bird's wake-up time was well established, five or six more twitchers arrived and set up their spotting scopes as it turned 8am. Bob was just explaining which tree the bird favoured, when one of them interrupted, "It's there now isn't it?"

The rustle of waxed jacket sleeves as six pairs of 'bins' are raised to expectant eyes. I didn't have binoculars, but could see something greyish, and fluffy in the middle of the bush. Camera shutters clicked around me, someone phoned a friend, and Bob set up his scope and offered me a view.

And there it was.

Hunched up, fluffed up from the cold and viewing us with seeming bemusement. A dark brown mask across its eyes, with pale greyish white outline, and long russety tail. He was actually quite a handsome fellow.

The black glossy bill with a slight hook at the tip was, Bob assured me from his own observations, perfectly suited to plucking bees, wasps and other insects from plants.

Two of the birders, one of them from Stoke, had driven overnight from Penzance in Cornwall just to see this great little bird. They weren't sure how long they would stay there, but I have a feeling they remained long after the cold had got the best of me.

I was told at one point last weekend, more than 500 people had amassed on the river bank.

Another birder followed me towards Staines. He had to catch a bus back to work having told his boss his car had broken down that morning - he didn't feel that he could justify his absence with 'I went to look at a rare bird'.

He asked me if it was true that they were planning to build a railway line through the moor. I told him about the Airtrack scheme and how it might affect the moor and it became apparent that this little bird could become quite a significant weapon in the Airtrack protestors' arsenal.

Staines Moor clearly is a gem for nature lovers. So much so that of all the places it could have stopped, the 'Staines shrike' as it has become affectionately known, has chosen to stay here a while.

Taking a wild guess, the instant reply would be Rubbish! To investigate still further as to the reason why the MP is held in such low esteem, would bring forth a whole range of reasons. The whole nation, it seems, is fed up with MP's and their expenses fiddles. We are all disgusted and demand that they are punished. The dozy worm voter has turned. After years of putting up with behaviour unbecoming, the cry is enough is enough, on your bike!
The problem is, how do you replace a bad servant with a good one? The system in place now is very silly. It is mainly based on a few top party people, without any consultation with the public, pick a candidate who says he/she is in agreement with the thoughts ideals policies etc,of the selection committee. A vote is taken by the members of the Committee and, as long as the person is thought to be "sound" the successful candidate, is advised that they have been adopted to fight the seat, at the next election. If the seat

has been in the hands of the same party for years, then the candidate is assured of serving as the next Member of Parliament for years. Teachers, Police, Clergy and other professional are tried and tested in the exam rooms for years and have to pass many tests before they are given a piece of paper stating that they are qualified, fit and proper to practice their chosen profession. There are no such tests to become a member of the
best club in London. The gold and diamond encrusted salary, expenses, pension, allowances, pay and conditions arranged by MP's themselves, are of the best. Overseas trips are mandatory, but expenses are paid. The big questions of the day are: How can we get this system changed so that terms and conditions are fair for all? How many of us, if we were MP's, would accept changes? How many would leave the gravy train, after so many years of high class travel? Very difficult choice when it comes to self sacrifice.
