A DIETER is celebrating his success after losing more than eight stones in a year.
Christian Azolan, 26, of Weald Way, Hayes says his weight began spiralling out of control when he was eighteen after the death of his fahter.
At the time Christian was studying fashion at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in Kent. He says when he started university he was 13 stones but by the time he finished he weighed more than 21 stones.
Christian said: "At the time it just seemed like an easy option for me, it was a way of distracting myself from actually dealing with the grief. I gained a lot of the weight during my placement year at San Fransico.
"But I never really realised how much weight I'd put on until I applied for a job over a year ago as a visual merchandiser. I had to get a photo pass made at the time and I was just shocked by the picture. I just couldn't believe it was me."
He said that's when he realised he had to do something about it and he joined an organisation called LighterLife after one of his friends lost three stones through their programme.
He said: "I decided to go with them because they offered counselling and because I knew food wasn't the real issue."
He said the counselling was done as a group and it allowed him to see that a lot of the time he was eating as a way of rewarding himself.
He said: "I've learnt to change that now by rewarding myself by buying something instead like a CD or clothes.
"I'm continuing to keep the weight off which is great and I go to Virgin Active in Stockley Park. I also go out more with my friends whereas before I was just a hermit."
Christian works as at 3 Mobile in The Chimes and also does freelance fashion designing for French Connection and Tesco.

Spencer Gibbons, 38, of Clyfford Road, Ruislip Gardens, died in Dawley Road, Hayes, at about 6.20am last Wednesday (24).

He was on his way back to work at Hendricks Lovell, a building material distributors in Dawley Road, when he was involved in a crash with two cars.

His wife of 15 years, Sharon Gibbons, 38, said: "Everyone will remember him for his big cheesy smile and his infectious laugh. He was very easy going and didn't take anything too seriously."

The motorbike fanatic had two sons, Jack, nine, and Alfie, four, and the family had a holiday booked to go to Disneyland Resort Paris next month.

Mrs Gibbons added: "He was an absolutely lovely father and he was a big Liverpool FC fan too."

Flowers have also been laid at the crash scene along with a Liverpool FC scarf and messages from his friends and family.

One message read: "My darling brother I love you with all my heart. Sweet dreams. Love you always and forever. Sammie."

Another said: "Spencer, life is so unfair. A lovely guy with a great smile and personality. A great loss to your family. In our thoughts."

A few of his friends have also emailed the Gazette to pay tribute to him.

Paul Shelford said: "I worked with Spencer and have to say I was deeply shocked and upset at the news. Such a nice bloke and a great dad. All of us at Skyline Roofing will miss him dearly. Hope he rests in peace."

A GRANT of £40,000 has saved a charity which helps young people find employment from the threat of closure.
The P3 Job Shop which runs in Station Road, Hayes and High Street Yiewsley was due to close down both its branches on June 1 but thanks to Hillingdon Council's support it can continue for the next six months whilst it tries to raise more funding.
The organisation helps people between 16 - 25 to find work, giving support to youngsters with few qualifications as well as those who are homeless, drug addicts, asylum seekers and clients with language barriers. It also provides accommodation having three hostels in the borough. Over the last year the P3 Job Shop has helped more than 120 people.
The grant was approved by Hillingdon Council at their Cabinet meeting on Thursday (May 28).
Ray Puddifoot, leader of the council, said: "I received an email from the P3 Job Shop last week saying they are closing and that they would be making redundancies from June 1.
"They were getting funding from The London Development Agency, but this stopped on March 31. The organisation had been looking for funding from other sources but with no success.
"We have given them the grant because we felt it was important for us to help them because the work that they do is vital particularly at a time of recession when jobs aren't easy to come by."
Mr Puddifoot explained it was possible to provide the funding because the council have a contingency fund of £700,000 to deal with issues like this.
Neelam Challoner, manager at the branch in Hayes, said: "We're grateful to the council because they helped us at the last moment, to do what we do best which is helping other people to get into work.
"We are now putting a bid for Hillingdon Community Trust for £40,000 so that we can continue for a year."
She explained keeping the Job Shop going is really important because it's giving a future to young people.
She added: "We don't just help people by looking at their CV and improving their practical skills but we also look at issues such as confidence and motivation as well."

Bhangra, Babylon and the Blues is flavoured with the exotic sounds of sitar, tabla and steel pan, deployed in subtle compositions by Tony Haynes that lean towards Africa, the Caribbean and India, rather than conventional swing, rock or funk.

The world-jazz orchestra is delighted to present for this occasion sarod virtuoso Shahadat Hossein Khan, visiting from Bangladesh, who will be performing alongside regular world-class musicians Paul Jayasinha, Bryan Wallen, Claude Deppa and Kevin Robinson (trumpets), Chris Biscoe, Tony Kofi and Louise Elliott (reeds), Lucy Rahman (voice), Yousuf Ali Khan (tabla), Brian Abrahams (drums) and Baluji Shrivastav (sitar, dilruba).

The performance will take place at The Beck Theatre, in Grange Road, at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £15 with concessions available.

MONDAY, 20th April, 2009 was a Red Letter day for Hayes Amateur Boxing Club, when their new, purpose-built gymnasium was officially opened by the guests of honour, the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr. Brian Crowe, Cllr. Henry Higgins, and former ABA, Commonwealth and World Light-Heavyweight Champion, John Conteh.

The gym, at the entrance to the site of the old athletic stadium, in Judge Heath Lane, Hayes, was packed to capacity, with many local councillors and other civic dignitaries in attendance, including of course, Hayes ABC trainers, boxers and Committee members, and those who were there by personal invitation.

The club's Hon. Secretary, Alan South welcomed the Mayor into the ring to get proceedings underway.

The Mayor spoke well of the distinguished history of the club, and of how it was so important for youngsters to be enabled to get aggression out of their system with just such a facility as this, which he said matched anything that he had had the privilege of opening.

At the conclusion of his speech, he welcomed John Conteh into the ring with the sentiment that he had "never anticipated sharing the same ring with a world champion!"

John said that he had emerged from the tough back streets of Kirby, in Liverpool as a ten-year old, to join the local boxing club there. He agreed wholeheartedly with the Mayor on the importance of a facility such as this and how it would encourage local youngsters to get off the street corners and get involved --- that this is where future champions could be nurtured.

He said that he had been a great friend of the late Chris Finnegan and was sorry
that Chris could not be there on this terrific occasion for the club.

After a witty and eloquent speech, he handed over, after hearty applause, to Hayes ABC's Chairman, Mr Arthur Clements, who thanked the councillors and staff at Hillingdon Borough Council, especially Bill King, Jim Cameron and Steph Costa, from the Major Construction Projects Team, who have been instrumental in providing this tremendous facility, that has become our new home.

He also spoke of the great debt owed to Fred Brown and Dave Currivan, the club's two long-standing coaches -- he said that they were at the club three nights a week, but that it did not stop there -- on the other nights they were either out with the boxers at shows, or were observing the boxers at other clubs who were likely to be matched with their charges in future contests.

He also paid tribute to the Hillingdon Trust, for their generous grant of £15,000 to
the club, and to our sponsor, Mr Eddie Howes, the owner of the Quickseal glass and
glazing company, of West Drayton, who has been very generous with money and
equipment for the new gym.

He mentioned that the club's most famous sons, Kevin and Chris Finnegan, who sadly, both passed away very recently, were sorely missed, especially on this auspicious occasion and that Chris, who was our President, would have been so proud to have been involved at this opening ceremony.

Before handing over to the Mayor and John Conteh to cut the ribbon, officially declaring the club open, he said that, above all, the person who had to be remembered on this occasion, was the club's founder member, trainer and mentor, Dickie Gunn, who trained so many boxers to become champions. These included, of course, the aforementioned Chris Finnegan, who represented his club and country when he won the Olympic Middleweight gold medal at the Mexico Olympics in 1968.

He said that, after the cutting of the ribbon, there would be six junior exhibition bouts for the club's boxers to show their paces, followed by refreshments which were being provided by our very good friends from the Hayes Working Men's Club, who, he said had given such generous support to our club over the years, for which we cannot thank them enough.

And, finally, he thanked the Committee of Hayes ABC for all their hard work and
commitment, which has come to fruition with this marvellous facility.

The evening was a huge success, enjoyed by all, and the boxing club and its supporters and patrons are looking forward with great enthusiasm and hopes for the future success of the club.
