Members of the MyOlympia group lost a battle to prevent the removal of the weekday District Line service to the station last year, and have now blasted Transport for London for its latest proposals.

TfL wants the footbridge - used as a cut-through by non-travelling pedestrians - to be blocked by ticket barriers on both sides.

Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea Councils, whose territories fall either side of the tracks, are urging TfL to abandon the plans.

A TfL spokesman said installing ticket gates is one option being considered to cut fare evasion and help pay for improvements to the Overground network.

He said: "Network Rail, the owner of the property, has advised that the footbridge is not a right of way. However we are taking the concerns of the community into consideration and will continue to liaise with both Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham Councils to find a way forward."

Brendan McGrath, MyOlympia campaign organiser, said: "By threatening the closure of the Olympia station footbridge to the public, TfL are not only adding insult to the injury of axing weekday District Line services, but also callously disregarding local people's rights.

"It is doubly shameful as several of the alternatives to the weekday Tube service, closed just six months ago, are accessible only by crossing the bridge, including the only remaining direct connection to Earl's Court, the C1 bus."

Mr McGrath argued that the bridge is a public right of way as it has been in continual use as such for more than 20 years.

A spokesman for Kensington and Chelsea Council said the bridge was a 'useful link'for people to avoid long detours, and that both local authorities believe there is now a formal right of way.

And Councillor Nick Botterill, Hammersmith and Fulham's deputy leader, said: "We have suggested to TfL that the barriers could be designed in such a way that the bridge would be able to stay open with no charge to anyone.

"TfL says it has come up with an alternative system, where residents are issued with passes to cross the bridge without buying a train ticket, but we are concerned about how this would be managed."

Mr Botterill said 37 residents had written to the council to say they had used the bridge to cross the tracks since before 1992, but that the autthority is 'still keen to hear from more'.

The public meeting was called after eagle-eyed neighbours spotted surveyors for the chain in the historic North Pole pub, which dates back to 1840.

It is thought the pub, in North Pole Road, may have been earmarked for a new Sainsbury's Local store. It only recently reopened after running into financial trouble. New managers were only able to secure a short-term lease, which is coming to an end.

It is surrounded by a family-run florist, three grocers, a chemist, post office, sandwich bar, cafe and a butcher's shop. All are expected to suffer if Sainsbury's moves in.

Conservative St Charles ward councillor Matthew Palmer said: "There is real concern that a Sainsbury's Local would inevitably damage the future of established shops that have served our community well.

"I was very pleased to see so many local people at the meeting. I am also encouraged that our determination to protect our local businesses has real cross-party support.

"Planning law is not going to be strong enough to stop this. The local community needs to act together to get clear answers from Sainsbury's and their competitors.

"We don't want to lose our local pub to another supermarket chain."

Campaigners are organising a petition to convince Kensington and Chelsea Council to refuse any application to change the use of the building from a pub to a retail unit.

Another councillor for St Charles ward, Labour's Pat Healy, said: "I have been approached by many local residents and shopkeepers who are outraged at this threat to the community. The degree of anger was palpable at the meeting as scores of people crowded into the pub to have their say."

Sainsbury's already has a superstore in Ladbroke Grove and Local stores at Ladbroke Grove station, Westbourne Park, Westbourne Grove and Queens Park.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: "We are exploring the possibility of opening a Sainsbury's Local in North Kensington, but we have no confirmed plans at the moment. We are considering a number of potential sites and will update the community should any plans come forward."

The 59-year-old woman was a parishioner at the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church of St Mary of Debre Tsion, in Battersea.

The church was led by Gebrehana Semre (pictured) who subsequently used his position to visit the woman in September 2010 to bless her home and welcome her into the church.

He told her that for the blessing to be successful she would need to be naked. Although uncomfortable with his demand, the victim trusted the clergyman and went along with it.

During the ritual 'blessing', Semre sexually assaulted her three times.

She was reluctant to go to police but her family persuaded her to take a stand a month after the attack.

Detectives from Kensington and Chelsea's community safety investigated and charged Semre with three sexual assaults.

At one point the trial had to be adjourned as the victim struggled with the distress of giving her account in the witness stand.

Semre initially denied all three charges but was convicted of two in an earlier trial in December 2010 when the jury failed to agree on the third. The judge ordered a retrial and at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, May 11, Semre admitted the third sexual assault.

He was given a12-month suspended sentence for each offence, to run concurrently.

DS Paul Power, who led the investigation, said: "This was a complete breach of trust by a man who was able to use his position within the church to sexually abuse a member of his congregation.

"The impact this has had on her is immeasurable. She is no longer able to be a part of the church that she believes in and she continues to be affected by this on a daily basis.

"I commend her strength and courage in coming forward and speaking out against this, and hope that this will encourage others who may have also been victims of abuse."

Police also warned that it was likely Semre had targeted other victims and asked them not to be too scared to contact them.

DI Jason Fitzpatrick added: "This individual has clearly targeted vulnerable victims, believing they will not report him to police through fear.

"Semre still practises within his community and I would like to assure anyone who may also be a victim of our support and commitment to their safety, and encourage them to contact us."

A SOUTH Kensington church council has been fined after a worker was left paralysed from the waist down after falling from height during refurbishment work.

The self-employed joiner, who remains unnamed, fell three metres from a poorly guarded balcony at St Paul's Church, in Onslow Square, and suffered a broken back as well as three broken ribs and a broken shoulder.

The accident happened as the worker was helping install an adjustable floor on March 3, 2010 with Holy Trinity Brompton parish council, which runs the church, admitting breaching health and safety laws by not putting up a temporary high barrier.

They were fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £4,458 in costs at a Westminster Magistrates Court hearing on April 25.

It was revealed in court that a high barrier had been in place but removed following complaints it prevented the movement of materials at the site and, when a rail the worker leant on dropped, he fell over the edge.

The parish council said it deeply regretted the incident and has come to a compensation agreement with the victim.

Sally Rissbrook, an associate solicitor at Irwin Mitchell who represented the victim, said: "Time and time again both our cases and prosecutions by the Health and Safety Executive highlight the terrible consequences that falls from height have on so many people, often leading them to suffer serious and even fatal injuries.

"It is hugely important that employers and other bodies recognise just how important it is for them to meet their safety responsibilities in relation to working at height by offering training and the best possible equipment to protect workers."

Shahid Hussain was charged with nine offences after environmental health officers from Kensington and Chelsea Council visited Pak Butchers, in Portobello Road, in December 2010 and found the shop in an unhygienic condition.

They found a dead mouse on a glue board under the fridge with mouse droppings found inside a container used to store clean knives and on a cutting board.

After handing down an official warning, officers found no improvement a month later and prosecuted Hussain.

He told Hammersmith Magistrates Court on May 14 that poor health in 2009 meant he passed day-to-day control of his business to his cousin but, after pleading guilty to all the charges, was ordered to pay £9,729.20 including costs.

Councillor Fiona Buxton, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, said: "This butcher's shop clearly posed a threat to the health of anyone buying meat from it. Our officers took immediate steps to remove this risk but I'm afraid that the owner failed to put things right.

"The court has recognised just how bad the conditions were and I hope that this fine sends out a message that we will not tolerate unhygienic practices in the borough."

The Craigie Aitchison Memorial Window, named Crucifixion 2008: A Memorial Window and designed by artist Neil Phillips, was dedicated by the Bishop of London Richard Chartres on May 17 at an Ascension Day Service.

Mr Aitchison CBE was planning a collaboration with the South Kensington church at the time of his death in 2009 after the Edinburgh born artist settled in the area.

And his family gave the church permission to carry on with his designs for the window which includes familiar motifs including the Italian Cypress tree and his beloved Bedlington Terrier.

"I think we've really stuck to the plan and painted as best we can, trying to stand in the shoes of Craigie Aitchison," said Mr Phillips. "He was terribly excited about it, discovering a new art form that really did lend itself greatly to the way he painted."

The Reverend Ginny Thomas, vicar, said: "The window is a moving, timeless and unique interpretation of the Crucifixion, which always elicits a response. It is a significant addition to St Mary's."

Funding for the window came from the Jerusalem Trust, the Linbury Trust and parishioner Mary Lewis and her family.

A VISION for improving the area underneath and around the Westway, creating hundreds of new jobs, has been revealed.

The North Kensington site is one of the most run-down in Kensington and Chelsea and the council has identified it as an area in need of regeneration as it continues to recover from the construction of the flyover in 1970.

It has published its draft planning strategy for the area, which includes new shops, businesses and sports facilities, and is asking residents to have their say on the future of the 23-acre area, which they have labelled an 'oppressive negative influence'.

Councillor Tim Ahern, head of planning, said: "This is a very important document and sets out just what we believe any future development of the area underneath and around the Westway should include.

"I urge local residents and businesses to look at it carefully and to have their say on the future of this important area.

"I believe that in the years ahead we could see a far more accessible, inviting and indeed thriving Westway at the heart of North Kensington."

The planning strategy, if approved, would shape all future developments in and around the Westway.

It would include the renovation of the skate park, while maintaining a trading environment for Portobello Market and providing space for charities and community services.

A total of 13,000sqm of 'retail, community, sport and employment' space would create up to 335 jobs in the area, while improving safety and access under the Westway would also be a priority.

A new pedestrian and cycle subway would be built to ease transport to White City while an extension to Kensington and Chelsea College would also be considered.

The document says: "Despite the passage of time, the scars of this development (the Westway) have still not completely healed.

"It is hoped that this will aid in creating a better environment and improve connectivity between communities to the north and the south of the flyover."

A public consultation on the plans will run until Friday, June 8.

A copy of the consultation can be viewed at www.rbkc.gov.uk/planningandconservation.aspx or at Kensington Town Hall and any of the borough's libraries.

The North Kensington centre, which was opened by Mrs Cameron in 2010, has received a three-year grant from the Cheyne Charity that will see children able to enjoy hydrotherapy swimming at the Jack Tizard School, in Shepherd's Bush, and yoga at Kensal Rise.

"The Council has done a really brilliant job working with local parents to provide a world class facility for children with special needs," said Mrs Cameron. "What is important now is that we all work together to build on this and continue to raise more money for new activities into the centre."

Mrs Cameron also launched the centre's new campaign for a holiday programme with money raised going towards specialised short breaks.

PLANS to name a potential Crossrail station in North Kensington as Portobello Station has triggered a lively debate among residents and neighbours.

In last week's Chronicle, Kensington and Chelsea Council leader Sir Merrick Cockell suggested the name as the best way to boost visitors to the area and capture 'public imagination'.

The council is campaigning hard for a station at Kensal Green and is offering to underwrite the entire construction costs themselves as well as funding several studies into its potentially positive impact.

It is hoped the station would help regenerate the 67-acre North Kensington site, bringing around 2,000 homes, business and community facilities in an area which suffers from the seventh highest level of unemployment along Crossrail's proposed route.

"Up to now we have been talking about a station at Kensal or even Kensal Crossrail, but frankly the name Kensal doesn't have much of a grip on the public imagination," wrote Sir Merrick. "The local name that does is, of course, Portobello. In fact Portobello is, as we all know, a world-famous brand.

"There is the question of finding an attractive brand that will make the thousands of new homes and business units on the Kensal site that bit more appealing. Given a choice, we reckon property marketeers would choose Portobello every time.

"In the end, the final decision on station names rests with the Crossrail sponsors but, as the underwriters, the council can reasonably expect to have some influence. So from now on, we will start introducing the idea of a Portobello station into our campaign material."

It has sparked debate among residents who have been giving their views on the council website on the naming of any new station.

One said: "I thought North Kensington would be the obvious choice for its name. North Kensington is a huge, but not
well-landmarked, part of the
Royal Borough and deserves some type of landmark to properly acknowledge it."

Another, known as Russell wrote: "Totally agree with the new name, love Kensal as I do, Portobello is almost universally recognised."

But a third resident added: "I think calling it Portobello will be very confusing, rather like Ryanair claiming to fly to a European city and it being an hour away. Ladbroke Grove is closer and a fairly familiar name but I like the suggestions of North Kensington which would help to boost a much bigger area than Portobello alone."

Do you want to have a say on how Golborne Road Bridge should look in the future?

Plans to enhance the bridge, by the council, Goldborne Forum and local designers, will be on show today (Friday) on Golborne Road between 11am and 3pm and tomorrow (Saturday) between the same times.

Councillor Nick Paget-Brown, deputy council leader, said: "The Golborne Road bridge could do with a makeover and we want to know what local people think would give the bridge a lift. I hope as many people as possible come along to talk to their local councillors, members of the Golborne Forum and to see what the designers have in mind."

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was glassed in the face and then hit by a car in Earls Court.

The 21-year-old victim had attended a music promotion night at the nightclub in the My Place Hotel, in Trebovir Road on Sunday, April 29.

At around 4.45am he went outside and saw two men involved in a heated argument before being punched in the side of the head before being hit by a passing grey-coloured Vauxhall Astra.

DC Ellen Jones, from Notting Hill CID, said: "This incident happened opposite McDonald's on the Earls Court Road. We know there were a number of people in the area.

"This was a nasty assault which left the victim needing stitches to his head. We also know a car hit the victim and drove off.

"If you live or work in the area or were at the nightclub and saw anything which may help us identify the attacker and the car driver then please contact police."

Anyone with information should call DC Jones on 020 8246 0216 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

BUDDHISTS marked a historic anniversary by unveiling an inscribed bench in Holland Park.

Sixty members of Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a UK Buddhist group, commemorated the 40th anniversary of the meeting between renowned religious scholar Dr Daisaku Ikeda and historian Dr Arnold Toynbee on Saturday.

The pair's meeting, which included many walks through the park, inspired the best-selling book Choose Life, which is used as a manual for living a creative and peaceful life.

Guests, including Kensington and Chelsea Mayor Councillor Julie Mills, enjoyed champagne and vanilla cake before toasting the inscription that reads Dr Ikeda, Dr Toynbee, Choose Life.

Ms Mills delighted members
by saying: "If I could choose a religion, I would choose to be a Buddhist."

An exhibition called Choose Life - Celebrating the Power of Dialogue will also be held at the SGI-UK London Ikeda Peace Centre, in Wakefield Street, Westminster from Monday to next Saturday. Visit www.sgi-uk.org.
