The Campion House development has finally been given the go ahead after a long road of planning rejections and appeals.

An inspector this week found in favour of developers Linden Homes following the third public enquiry.

Protesters are disappointed that the conversion of the former seminary at the heart of the Spring Grove Conservation area is to go ahead despite their concerns.

David Pavett of campaign group Campion Concerns, told the Chronicle: "We hoped for another result but we weren't confident so it's not a total shock.

"Our campaign has been well worth it, because what they are proposing is significantly better.

"We have secured big improvements so our actions have not been in vain."

Developers Linden Homes had their application to build 154 homes on the Thornbury Road land rejected three times and appealed the decision on all occasions, now finally getting the go ahead following the most recent three day enquiry.

Councillors and protesters agree that the latest set of plans, which were rejected in December, have been by far the best.

However many still have serious concerns about the buildings encroaching on land specified as Public Open Space and the lack of family housing included.

Linden Homes plan to demolish the more modern out buildings on the land and create 13 new ones while converting the listed buildings on the site, Tigar Hall and Campion House, to provide a community facility, IT suite and exhibition space.

In the inspector's appeal decision document he said: "I find that the development would not harm, and would preserve, the character and appearance of the locality and the Spring Grove Conservation Area whilst simultaneously enhancing the setting of Campion House."

A Sky News reporter was charged £230 and told his laptop required a new motherboard when, in reality, the only remedy required was pushing a chip back into place - a few-second job that other shops did for free.

On collection, the original motherboard was still inside and the loose memory chip had been replaced unnecessarily but a spokesman for PC World, which is in West Cross Way, said the technician 'had followed correct procedures'.

The results of the investigation, which was carried out using surveillance software loaded onto a brand-new laptop, were described by a Trading Standards investigator as 'shocking'.

Richard Webb, an e-commerce investigator for Trading Standards, told Sky News: "I'm really quite shocked. It's a big abuse of trust. If you were expert in computers you wouldn't have to hand in your machine to be repaired. They know that.

"They know you won't be able to tell what they've done afterwards, they know you're putting your trust in them and unfortunately, as we're seeing, there are too many people willing to abuse that trust."

A spokesman for PC World said: "The technician followed the correct procedures. We offer an up-front fixed price laptop repair service for £230 for any out of warranty or non-customer service agreement repair. This means we will establish and repair the fault and there will be no extra charges or refund, as it is a fixed price."

The four day inquiry by government inspectors is to be launched this week following an appeal by the developers after their application to build on the Campion House site in the heart of the Spring Grove conservation area, was again rejected by Hounslow Council.

Developers Linden Homes, hope to build 154 homes on the Thornbury Road land in Osterley whilst keeping Tigar Hall as a community base.

Councillors and protesters agree that the latest set of plans, which were rejected in December, have been by far the best, with Councillor Barbara Reid saying at the time: "I think we are almost there but we need one more bash at getting it right."

However they raised serious concerns about the buildings encroaching on land specified as Public Open Space and the lack of family housing included.

David Pavett of campaign group Campion Concerns, told the Chronicle: "I'm not really into the predicting game but I think the council has a strong case. They have employed a planning consultant who has thrown up proofs of evidence, I think he has made a good case.

"This is the third appeal that Linden Homes have now made and it's just a matter of the inspectors saying yes or no at the end of the day, obviously I hope they say no.

"They are trying to squeeze too much on to the site and there should be a greater ratio of large family homes with three beds or more compared to flats."

Linden Homes hope to demolish the more modern out buildings on the land and create 13 new ones while converting the listed buildings on the site, Tigar Hall and Campion House, to provide a community facility, IT suite and exhibition space.

The enquiry opens today (July 28) at the Hounslow Civic Centre and is expected to last for four days. It will start at 10am each day and the public are welcome to attend.

The Red Lion Pub in Linkfield Road, gathered locals and customers as a cast to put on two performances of Dick Whittington over the weekend, however the group cheekily changed the name to Whip Dickington.

Entertainment manager of the pub, Beverley Turnage, said: "The £5 tickets were sold out in advance of the show, which is great.

"We also had a scene with slave boys and girls who we later auctioned off to the highest bidder, who got to have a picture taken with the slave of their choice, it was great fun."

The money raised will go to charity Whizz Kids, which helps get disabled children mobile and the Isleworth Scouts, which had two leaders performing in the play.
