Fans have spoken of their joy at Staines Town FC getting to the second round of the FA cup and beating one of the highest teams they have ever played.

The swans played League Two team Shrewsbury Town away on Saturday November 7 and beat them 1-0, and around 170 fans journeyed up to support, wearing costumes and waving banners.

John Blair, of support group Staines Massive, dressed as Ali G in honour of the TV stars link with the town.

He said: "I got the Ali G suit out and put on a the sticky beard to support the team. It was a fantastic day, and I'll get it out for the next round against Millwall."

Mr Blair also appeared on ITV the next day dressed as Ali G for an FA cup programme when the channel visited the Wheatsheaf Lane ground.

Another Swans fan, John Moutter, from Egham, said: "We were singing all through the match, it was fantastic. About 170 people went, and that is about half our home supporters, so to travel all that way showed dedication.

"I am a Newcastle supporter and used to visit Shrewsbury to watch big games between them, so I had never dreamed that Staines would play them and win."

Due to a 4-1 win against AFC Wimbledon on Monday (9), Millwall are now playing the swans in round two on November 28.

A meeting is taking place tomorrow (13) between the club, football officials, and police to gauge whether the game should be played in Wheatsheaf Park, or be moved to Brentford because of the capacity.

Fears have been raised that hooliganism and vandalism could blight Wheatsheaf Lane if the match plays in Staines.

But Swans chairman Alan Boon said: "It should be ok as long as we handle it right, but I don't think there will be any problems. Priority tickets will be given to supporters from the area, and some will go to Millwall. It is in there interest not to cause trouble."

Mr Moutter said: "Although there has been some talk on forums about Millwall, I don't think there will be any trouble because they are a big side and are not going to want to come to Staines to attack regular supporters."

A second theft of a remembrance day item was stolen in Staines at the weekend.

Surrey councillor Denise Turner-Stewart, put up two Union Jack flags on railings in Stainash Parade, Staines, and Woodthorpe Road, Ashford on Saturday November 8 night, only to find one of them missing the next day.

The theft follows an incident on Monday November 2 when a Royal British Legion poppy appeal box was taken from Spelthorne Council's offices in Knowle Green, Staines, after it was chained to a desk.

Mrs Turner-Stewart said: "I went over to Woodthorpe Road on Sunday night and found it missing. I was just trying to pay respect to people who have died and someone comes along and steals it. It is unbelievable."

Mrs Turner-Stewart put them up to show respect for the fallen, because 20 flags were supposed to be put up in Edinburgh Drive, Stainash Parade, and Victoria Parade, all in Staines, but were delayed because of insurance issues.

The police have now issued a photo of the man they would like to question in regard to the stolen collection box from Spelthorne's offices last week.

Detectives are keen to speak to Matthew Bennett, 19, of Bowes Road, Staines, and members of the public are requested not to approach the man but contact Surrey Police instead.

He is still believed to be in the area.

The police are currently going through CCTV footage into the incident, but it is not understood how much money was in the box.

Spelthorne council Leader John Packman says: 'It is almost incredible that someone would want to steal money that goes to support ex servicemen and women from conflicts all over the world. Fortunately, in this instance, we have clear pictures of this criminal and he can expect to be brought to account very soon".

Anyone who has seen Bennett or with any information on his current location should contact Detective Sergeant Nick Hemmant CID on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference SL/09/8933.

The Herald and News would like it to be known that Surrey Police do have access to social networking sites while investigating crime.

The titles' sister paper, the Staines Informer, reported last week that an investigation into brick wall vandalism in Lower Sunbury was being hampered as officers couldn't get access to social networking site Facebook because of an internal ban.

But Spelthorne acting neighbourhood inspector Rebecca Kempster has stated that the force can access the site, along with others such as auction page eBay, to investigate or prevent crime.

The Herald and News is happy to clarify these points.

Inspector Kempster said: "Surrey Police want to clarify that we can get access to Facebook and other sites when investigating crime."

The investigation is still ongoing into the 20 incidents of vandalism in Elizabeth Gardens and Saxonbury Avenue which occurred on Monday 19 and 26 October.

It is believed children are being blamed for the thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Anyone with information should call the police on 0845 125 2222 if they know of anything.

A mugger threatened a woman at knifepoint while she got into her car on Thursday November 5.

The incident happened outside Wessex Court, in De Havilland Way, Stanwell when the 24-year-old woman was getting into her car at around 7.30pm.

The victim, who is from Staines, was talking on her mobile phone when she was approached by the suspect.

The man opened the driver's door and threatened her with a knife, which led to the victim handing over a blue Nokia mobile phone, and a silver handbag containing £100 and toiletries.

He then fled on foot in the direction of a green in Wessex Court.

Detective constable Nick Beer, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was clearly a concerning incident where a young woman has been targeted by a cowardly offender.

"Fortunately the victim was not injured during the incident but this was obviously a very upsetting ordeal which has left her scared and shaken."

The suspect is described as a tall black man in his early 30s, with muscular build, short hair, who spoke in a southern accent and was wearing a long smart jacket.

Following the incident, police officers have carried out house to house enquiries, and are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage in the area.

Scene of crime officers also attended the scene and took away a number of items for forensic analysis, and the police have released a computer generated image of the man believed to mugged the woman.

DC Beer said: "I would like to speak to anyone who thinks they recognise the e-fit image or who was in or around the Wessex Court area on Thursday evening.

"Although it would have been dark at the time of the offence, this is a busy residential area so I feel sure that someone must have seen or heard something out of the ordinary."

DC Beer added they would like to hear from people who saw where the offender ran to, and said that the police are working hard to bring the mugger to justice.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery or with any information should contact DC Beer at Staines CID on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference SL/09/9027, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The incident happened on Friday October 23 in Laleham Road, Staines, when a blue motorbike and a red Ford Fiesta pulled up next to a 33-year-old man walking down the road.

The vehicles were being driven in a convoy, and three men got out while one of them hit the man, who is from Staines, in the neck and stomach with a wooden baseball bat.

He fell to the ground and the suspects threatened him several times before getting back in their vehicles and driving away.

Detective constable Davinia Fielding , who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a very unusual incident where a man has been subjected to an unprovoked attack in broad daylight.

"The victim only sustained minor injuries during this attack but this was clearly a very upsetting ordeal to go through and I am determined to track down those responsible."

Officers have carried out house to house enquiries in the area, and the Staines urban safer neighbourhood team are carrying out more patrols in the area.

The first suspect is described as a white male, 6ft tall, who was wearing a black motorcycle helmet and a balaclava.

The second suspect is described as a tall white male of stocky build, with short brown hair, a goatee beard, and in his early 30s.

DC Fielding said: "I would like to hear from anyone who was in the Laleham Road area at the time, particularly anyone who may have seen the bike or the car used by the suspects either before or after the incident.

"We are fortunate to live an area where attacks of this nature are extremely rare and I can assure Spelthorne residents that everything possible is being done to bring those responsible to justice."

Staunch opponents of Airtrack have spoken of their disappointment at a public enquiry being put back by a few months.

BAA announced recently that the public enquiry has been put back to late spring 2010 so Network Rail can undertake timetabling work in the light of objections received.

It is understood the 'work' is research to look into and change part of BAA's proposals, which stated that three of Egham's level crossing could be down for up to 40 minutes each hour.

Earl Gray, chairman of the Preservation of Staines Moor, said: "The enquiry was probably going to take place in February next year, so this is irritating at the least and annoying at the worst. It shouldn't have been put back.

"I wouldn't even call BAA amateurs, that is too good a word, because you can't put in a proposal and then spend a few months finishing off all the details. This is what has happened here.

"I was planning to speak at the public enquiry, but I have stopped writing my objections now, because some of the issues I wanted to raise might not exist when the enquiry comes round because they have changed them."

Residents living in and around Staines and Stanwell Moor have objected to the train line being built on the grounds it will take up common land belonging to the people, create noise and pollution, and take away green belt land used for recreation.

Residents also fear it will look unsightly, and are scared that land could be contaminated due to 50,000 square metres of unidentified waste being removed from Hithermoor for the track.

But Egham residents are objecting on the grounds that the town's three level crossings in Thorpe Road, Vicarage Road, and Station Road, could be down for up to 40 minutes each hour due to the trains running from Waterloo to Heathrow Terminal five.

Meher Oliaji, vice-chairman of Egham Chamber of Commerce, said: "It is a great pity that BAA were sloppy enough to put the application in without doing the detained timetable modelling which they must have known would be demanded, but it does bolster our case that their figures and projections cannot be trusted."

But Ms Oliaji said the delay will allow them to put a more detailed objection statement together.

Andrew McLusky, of Diamedes Road, Stanwell, said: "The delay is very worrying because it means the residents have to wait even longer to hear an outcome which has been bothering them for years. We have a right to get it out of the way as soon as possible."

A spokeswoman for BAA said: "In view of this additional timetabling work we will be seeking an inquiry commencement date in late spring of next year. This will have the
additional benefit of allowing more time to discuss matters with objectors
and to seek to resolve or reduce the issues before the inquiry."

The animal has now been living in Staines for 24 days, and was previously attracting up to 500 birders a day from all over the country.

Lee Evans, from Amersham in Buckinghamshire, said on his internet blog: "The Brown Shrike was showing extremely well on Monday (2) afternoon, affording me the best views so far. It is favouring the large bushes north of the River Colne and was busy gathering food.

"It has now been present for 23 days and shows no signs of departing."

The man was caught on CCTV on Monday November 2 when he was seen stealing a Royal British Legion poppy appeal box from Spelthorne Borough Council offices in Knowle Green, Staines.

It was just before 1pm then the man detached the box, which was chained to a desk, before making off with the collected money.

Council leader John Packman, said: "It is almost incredible that someone would want to steal money that goes to support ex-servicemen and women from conflicts all over the world. "Fortunately, in this instance, we have clear pictures of this criminal and he can expect to be brought to account very soon."

The police have been informed and are following up the theft, but it is not known how much was in the box.

"From a sporting perspective its pretty obvious that any athlete not seeing properly stands at a disadvantage so any budding sports enthusiasts should have their vision checked every couple of years."

A campaigning Staines man has said Spelthorne Council could save money for borough maintenance if they stop caring for their own flower beds.

Dave Woods, a member of Leacroft Residents' Association, has been campaigning against Spelthorne's decision to save £40,000 a year by letting 27 areas of land in the borough grow wild.

He is mainly concerned with two small areas of a patch of open space in a green in Leacroft, and about a month ago, residents dished out £50 to cut the grass themselves, which he says was also covered in litter.

Mr Woods said: "One thing I have always been trying to find out is how much Spelthorne spends on the seven flower beds outside their offices, but they never reveal the information.

"I feel it is a bit hypocritical on their part, because they say they are not cutting the 27 areas of grass to attract wildlife and to save £400,000 over 10 years, but if they chipped in and paved over the flower beds, that money could be used to cut the grass in Leacroft."

Mr Wood believes it costs about £2,000 a year to the seven patches after forming his own calculations.

During correspondence with council officers, Mr Woods found out that the council have an annual contract budge for grounds maintenance of £1,257,200.

The email went on to say there is no specific breakdown of the cost of bedding plants, and that planting and maintenance form part of the whole annual contract, which is not individually costed by Spelthorne.

A spokeswoman for Spelthorne Council, said the council re-let its grounds maintenance contract in April , partly to look at their spending, adding that residents opinion helped in their research, saying that less grass cutting in parks, letting open spaces grow wild, removing formal planting areas, and selling land for housing, would reduce costs.

She said: "Due to financial constraints we needed to reduce the overall cost of the grounds maintenance contract by more than £200,000. Part of these savings were realised by removing static park attendants and measures such as not closing pedestrian gates.

"The remainder was funded by reducing grass cutting in 27 sites around the borough, one of which is Leacroft. The majority of Leacroft Green does get cut regularly but there is a percentage of the area that remains uncut. All 27 sites are being monitored by officers and members and any issues that may arise are dealt with as soon as possible."

The incident happened on Tuesday October 20 between 11 and 11.15pm outside Que Pasa bar in Mustard Mill Road when policemen attended after reports of a fight between a group of men.

Surrey Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Staines on suspicion of assault and public order affray, and later arrested a 21-year-old man from Reading, a 19-year-old from Feltham, and a 22-year-old from Staines on suspicion of public order affray.

They have all be released on bail until December 2 while the investigation continues.

Detective constable Hannah Toogood, who is leading the investigation, said: "Although we have already made a number of arrests in connection with this incident we still urgently need anyone who was present on the night in question to come forward.

"Staines town centre would have been busy at the time of the incident and I would urge anyone with even the smallest piece of information to come forward."

The police said they are speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV, which they say has shown that a large number of people were passing by while the fight took place.

DC Toogood said: "Surrey Police will not tolerate any form of violent disorder and I am determined to bring those responsible for this crime to justice."

Youths are being blamed for vandalising a memorial site placed to commemorate victims of the 1972 Staines Air Crash.

On Friday October 31 residents of Waters Drive on the Moormede Estate, Staines, found the brick wall, benches, and memorial plaque strewn with smashed concrete slabs from the memorial site.

A grandmother and her granddaughter spent 15 minutes trying to make the site look as nice as possible, but other residents added 'it is an outrage this has happened.

Sue Mckechnie, who was with her four-year-old granddaughter Hanna Hobbs, said: "We came along and saw all the rubble, and thought it must have been vandals, so Hanna got it into her head to play Bob the Builder.

"We thought it was a shame but when we realised it was a memorial site I thought it was doubly disrespectful."

The site was placed at the end of 2004 as the town had no previous memorial site to remember the 118 people who lost their lives in the air crash on June 18 1972.

The Papa India plane had just left Heathrow and was heading towards Brussels when it crashed near the Moormede Estate.

It is one of the worst aeroplane crashes in British history.

Another nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said he regularly sees youths hanging about in the park late at night, and said he would like to see more police presence at the site.

The man said: "When I saw it in the morning it looked like the vandals had pried up some of the slabs and smashed them all over the floor and benches.

"The benches were broken and it looked like they had actually tried to hit the memorial plaque as well. It is absolutely outrageous."

The man said the site was vandalised about three years ago, when racist words were written over, which he believed was in reference to the aeroplane's codename 'Papa India.'

He added: "It must have something to do with half term, but I regularly see damage to the children's play area nearby, such as graffiti and litter.

"Some people show no respect, but it makes it even more outrageous when you think this site commemorates the dead."
