Councillor Forbes-Smith, cabinet member for parks and leisure at Spelthorne Borough Council, which has backed the project, said: "It is a choir and anybody who has a love of singing can go down and join.

Whilst parents shop, children are invited to search for pictures of pumpkins in the shop windows. Whenever they spy one, they must enter the shop to request their treat. If that's not enough to keep them amused, there will also be facepainting, glitter tattoos and Halloween mask making on offer.

Joanna Hall, Centre Manager of Two Rivers Shopping Centre, commented: "We realise that trick or treating can be a tricky dilemma for parents so we are pleased to be able to offer a safe option. I think that the event will provide a fun experience for the children, whilst getting the whole family into the Halloween spirit."

HOMES and roads had to be evacuated and cordoned off after an unexploded bomb was found in a cottage garden in Laleham.

Police received a call after Bruce and Mavis Duncan, of Blacksmith's Lane, reported the find at around 1pm on Friday.

The road and surrounding areas were soon cordoned off while police waited for an army bomb disposal unit to blow up the German incendiary device in a ditch that was dug in a nearby football field.

Residents were evacuated from their homes, with some heading to the village hall in The Broadway.

Mrs Duncan said: "We moved in two weeks ago and we both saw this thing and said 'what is that? It looks like a bomb'.

"We called the police and then everything happened.

"They came and closed all the roads, then the army came and four hours later it was blown up on a football pitch.

"I don't know if it would have gone off but we couldn't really live with it though."

The incident clearly had not affected Mrs Duncan's sense of humour as she quipped: "We've lived in Laleham for years but we've moved into the cottage with a real bang. If we had known there was a bomb in the garden we may have offered less."

The explosion was felt throughout the town, shaking the village hall, while the Herald & News received reports that the detonation was heard
in Staines.

Mrs Duncan said: "It really shook the other
buildings, it was such a blast and friends along the riverside said their windows shook."

Chief Inspector Clive Davies from Surrey Police, who was at the scene, said that his officers worked by liaising with the army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The bomb was placed in a hole dug in the middle of the village football field and detonated remotely at around 3.45pm.

Residents were then allowed to return to their homes at 4.30pm the same day.

Helen Vallender of Virginia Close, a road which was also evacuated, said: "It's a bit unbelievable. It's not something you expect to have, a bomb at the end of your road."

Reporter Anne-Sophie Briant reviews the Wraysbury Players latest production, Don't Dress For Dinner. Showing at Wraysbury Village Hall until Saturday.

A STYLISH country farmhouse is the setting for Marc Camoletti's hilarious farce Don't Dress for Dinner.

Bernard is hoping to entertain his beautiful mistress Suzy for the weekend and has arranged a cook to provide gourmet delights for his clandestine dinner.

He has packed off his wife Jacqueline to visit her mother and his best friend Robert has been invited as a suitable alibi.

Bernard is all set for his romantic weekend when things start to go horribly wrong.

What should have been a straightforward love tryst deteriorates with lots of misunderstandings and confusion in this hilarious comedy.

The Wraysbury Players deliver an excellent performance for this very funny play.
Ben Wood takes the role of Bernard in his stride. His smooth performance won the audience over right from the first minute.

The cook, Lena Vantoll has a cockney accent like you've never heard before. She portrays a stuck-up, made-up and utterly ridiculous Diva wannabe in an impeccable way.
The young Dan Stock is perfect as the charming, goody two-shoes, Robert who gets caught in the middle of the married couple's devious plans.

His command of the incredibly tricky monologues which would make a right minded man go mad were to be applauded.

The set provided just the right atmosphere for the middle class couple's home.

Some of the props were grotesque but added a magic touch. Bernard's puppy slippers, the cook's raunchy apron, the gong instead of the bell to call for dinner, the mistress's Miss Piggy wig , the fake tattoo on the arms of George, the cook's husband. All these reflected the cast's obvious pleasure in the whole production.

Put all these ingredients together and you get much more than an amateur performance. Each character was played in tune in an excellent Vaudeville style making the brilliant farces irresistible.

The Wraysbury Players have offered the audience a really good time and a glimpse at sheer talent.

Tickets for Don't Dress for Dinner are £7.00. Bar opens at 7.30pm curtains up at 8pm.

Are you missing your fix of Downton Abbey? Do you need more class and fabulous frocks in your life? Then Thorpe Players may have the answer. Their next play is An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde, and plays don't come much classier than that.

A story about an honest politician whose past catches up with him, director Valerie Lane says that "the play may have been written in 1895, but some issues don't change, and human nature certainly doesn't! The cast have worked incredibly hard to make sure that the play is both enjoyable and relevant to a modern audience." All Wilde's usual and clever story-telling is contained in this classic comedy, which is at Thorpe Village Hall from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st May at 8pm. Tickets cost £9 and £10 and can be booked on 07923 583295 or on the door, subject to availability.

Popular former mayor Caroline Spencer ran as an independent after she was deselected as a conservative candidate in September for reasons that remain a mystery to her and the public.

She will join Gerald Forsbrey and Denis Grant in the ward of Ashford Town which experienced a 40.06 per cent voting turnout.

Mrs Spencer received 1,273 to Mr Packman's 1,055.

Mrs Spencer won the hearts of the electorate by campaigning against on street parking charges and cuts at Ashford Hospital.

Her de-selection angered many residents who warmed to her good-nature and caring attitude.

Eighty-five year old Harold Trace, of Parkland Grove, Ashford said: "She was one of the finest mayors we have ever had and then she was mysteriously removed for no apparent reason.

"Most of us felt that it should have been for the public to decide who our councillors are. I'm delighted for her."

Caroline Spencer said: "My policy has always been to give the people a voice. I will be working for residents and businesses to ensure that there is a democracy in this borough.

"I'm delighted to be elected."

Mr Packman has come under fire in recent weeks for sending an email to all the borough's councillors in which he made some derogatory comments about council volunteer Barry Muggeridge.

A standards committee was called to review his behaviour after Mr Packman forwarded the email to Mr Muggeridge by mistake.

No further action was taken and Mr Packman was not disciplined.

Two other conservative candidates, Malcolm Royer and Kevin Flurry, were deselected for the 2011 borough elections.

Colin Davis who has been voted in as the councillor for Staines South paid tribute to Mr Packman.

He said: "John Packman has made a significant and decisive difference in Conservative politics locally for many, many years.

"John gave me my first break when he appointed me to his cabinet. I wish him well in the future."

AN 11 year-old trombonist will be playing in a concert with a full brass band and choir at Staines Salvation Army at 7pm on Saturday.

Isobel Daws has been playing the trombone for less than four years, but is studying at the Purcell School of Music, and is a member of the National Children's under-13's Orchestra. She is also a member of the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain.

The concert, which will raise funds for The Salvation Army's work locally, will also feature the band 'Ascot Brass', and The Salvation Army's own local choir, the Staines Songsters. The programme will include classical, easy listening, and contemporary music.

Isobel was first taught the trombone by Maisie Ringham-Wiggins, who is a member of Staines Salvation Army church, and who was awarded the MBE in the recent New Year's Honours for her services to music.

Isobel will be playing at the Brighton Dome and Birmingham Town Hall later this year, but says she's looking forward to playing at Staines Salvation Army on Saturday.

She said: "It will be strange playing to lots of people I already know, but I'm looking forward to the concert - especially playing a duet with my Dad for the first time! I hope lots of people will come so we can raise lots of money for The Salvation Army."

Tickets for the concert cost £6, and are available from The Salvation Army, Woodthorpe Rd., Ashford, Tel. 01784 423 424.
