THE inventor of the world's first permanently-tied shoelace has received acclaim from a unique source - the British Cheerleading Asssociation (BCA).

Father-of-three Peter Greedy, who lives in Hanwell, got plaudits from the BCA for inventing the Greeper, the shoelace which never comes undone.

Mr Greedy said he had his 'eureka' moment while driving down the motorway in 2001. He was, like many parents frustrated about the constant state of his young children's laces - regularly undone, frayed and tatty.

Not convinced that 'non-lace' options were the answer he set out to devise an alternative to traditional lace-up shoes when he had an image of what would become the Greeper shoelace system.

After six years or research and development, he finally came up with the revolutionary design and it was patented soon after.

He said: "The sports market has responded extremely positively to Greeper laces because of the obvious health and safety benefits, where people cannot ever trip on their undone laces."

Guests are invited to the Green Man Lane Public Exhibition on Saturday October 10.

The latest draft masterplan for the regeneration of the Green Man Lane estate will be available for public view and comment this weekend at Jubilee Hall, at the top of Green Man Lane, West Ealing.

Members of the public, particularly residents of the estate, neighbours and local stakeholders, are invited to come and view the plan and to give their feedback on the work done so far.

Refreshments will be available.

Current plans for the project will see the phased demolition of the 464 homes on the estate and 346 new properties built for affordable rent and 91 for shared ownership. A further 309 homes are being planned and will be available to buy outright.

In addition to providing new homes and community facilities, the redevelopment is aimed at linking the estate more effectively to West Ealing town centre and contributing to the regeneration of the wider area and community.

The 15 students of Brentside High School in Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, were linked with pupils from the Ferences Gimnazium in Budapest, Hungary earlier this year.

Following the link, two artists from Hungary came to the school to help the year eight pupils with their drawing and together, they created large pieces of art which reflected aspects of the River Thames and Danube.

They even boarded a boat from Westminster to Greenwich to get to grips with the River Thames.

The collection was displayed at the OXO Tower on The South Bank and the art work will also be displayed in Paris and Budapest later this year.

Mike Roddy, Arts College Director, said: "Our students and teachers were very excited about exhibiting their art work in such a prominent and prestigious setting.

"All of us are now looking forward to exhibiting again at the festival next year and continuing our partnerships with other European schools."

The event was part of the Thames Festival Trust in partnership with the British Councils' Connecting Classrooms initiative and sponsored by the Mayor of London.

A restauranteur has been hauled to court and ordered to pay out more than £1,300 for failing to produce evidence that he was disposing of his business waste properly.

Mohammed Hosseiny, 31, who owns Persian Palace, Uxbridge Road, West Ealing, pleaded guilty to the offence at Ealing Magistrates' Court last month.

He was fined £800 and ordered to pay £545 costs.

Hosseiny, of St Peters Way, Ealing, was unable to produce waste transfer notes from November 19 and January 8 to show he was disposing of the business's waste correctly.

He said he had been taking the waste to Greenford Re-use and Recycling Centre
himself but was unable to prove this with waste transfer notes.

Hosseiny has since joined up the council's scheme to take away his rubbish.

Dennis Hollywood, 19, set off from Centre Point in central London last Friday to walk over 400 miles to Glasgow.

He hopes to raise £5,000 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and has already raised £1,500. Dennis said he was inspired to do a fund-raising walk having lost loved ones to cancer.

He said: "I know its going to be tough but I want to do this. It's for a good cause and I want to raise money for a charity which has given me and my family a lot of support and with youth on my side, there has never been a more perfect time to do such a challenge. I want to do all I can to help."

Dennis has been training for weeks in the gym working on his personal fitness in the run up to his charity walk.

He has also completed a number of practice walks to get used to the distance as he plans to be walking 20 miles a day.

Mum Beverley, who joined Dennis on his first day said "I'm so proud of Dennis, he's organised the whole thing himself and is so determined to do it."

Dennis is being spurred on by family and friends, who are joining him for parts of the walk and he hopes to arrive in Glasgow on August 26, 40 days after he first set off.

You can find out more about how Dennis is getting on and pledging your support by visiting the website www.justgiving.com/londontoglasgow.
