The USM Metropolitan University Steering Group invites faculty and students to present their work with community partners during a poster session on December 4th. Posters will highlight current and previous collaborations with community partners, including K-12 students and teachers, industry partnerships, community service and service-learning projects, etc. Following the poster session, honorary speaker Dr. Barbara Holland will speak regarding the Metropolitan University vision for the future. Maine Veterans' Home is an organization the works closely with the US Department of Veteran Affairs to ensure the six MVH facilities are constantly updated to provide care for Maine's hero's and their families with the dignity and respect they have earned. Their mission is "caring for those who served." Services range from rehabilitation and therapy options to long term, residential and end of life care. The program also offers assistance in the form of a stipend to qualified veterans in order to minimize costs. Some of the associated volunteer opportunities include assisting with arts and crafts, transport, reading, events, gardening, and delivering mail.

2^nd Annual Husky Harvest: A Multicultural Celebration – Free & Open to the Public!

Thurs, Nov. 20^th (10am-2pm) – Woodbury Campus Center (Portland Campus)

The Husky Harvest is an international food festival to be held at Woodbury Campus Center. Hosted by USM's Event Planning and Management class in the Tourism and Hospitality Program, recipes from around the world will be shared potluck style while cultural dance performances and impressive ethnic food demonstrations take place. Local Food Vendors will be present at the event to offer traditional food samples and to sell you your favorite treats. The Husky Harvest will also have several art displays and activities to keep everyone of all ages entertained and involved in learning more about the cultural variety our community has to offer. Cultural programming starts at 10am and food will be served at 11am.

Family Volunteer Day

Sat, Nov. 22^nd – United Way of Greater Portland

Family Volunteer Day is a national effort held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It is designed to encourage families to volunteer together, introduce children to volunteering and help support the communities in which they live. In Portland, United Way of Portland will be hosting, located at One Canal Plaza, 3^rd Floor, Portland. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome (all young children must be accompanied by an adult). Volunteers will be helping to create the centerpieces for a Community Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving, as well as create personal cards for Meals on Wheels recipients. National Service Opportunity

Student Engagement Specialist Position - AmeriCorps

Portland Public Schools has joined forces with Goodwill Industries of New England to expand the Multilingual Leadership Corps AmeriCorps Program at two elementary schools. The program is designed to increase academic engagement among English Language Learners through school skills support, mentoring and community engagement programs. Both Presumpscot and Reiche elementary schools are looking for Student Engagement Specialists to work 300 hours between now and August 2015. In exchange for the work hours AmeriCorps members will receive $1175 education award. The schools are looking for adults 17+ interested in working one-on-one or in small groups to support ELL students in meeting reading and math proficiency goals. Programming will be conducted as an extension of the school day to provide students with the extra time necessary to garner the essential building blocks for learning. CA$H – Earn Continuing Education Credit!

The CA$H program is a joint effort of the United Way and Goodwill. They offer free tax preparation for low and moderate income households as well as financial and asset coaching. The aim is to provide resource education at the time of tax preparation to help clients make the most of their money and better their financial literacy. Volunteers are welcome to all positions, but Intake & Asset Guide volunteers are especially needed. Volunteers can earn up to 18 hours of continuing education credit for participating! No tax experience required!

Portland Farmers' Market – One-Time 20 Minute Commitment!

Oct. 25^th at Deering Oaks Park and 29^th at Monument Square

Local farmers' markets provide an excellent opportunity to meet the people who grow food for our region. The Market offer vegetables, fruit, herbs, berries, honey, syrup, flowers, dairy products and meats among other products. This is one of the oldest farmers' market in the country, starting in 1768, and has had especially grown in support the past decade. The Portland Farmers' Market is looking for volunteers to help with a farmers' market customer count. This would be a one-time 20 minute commitment at the upcoming Saturday and Wednesday markets. This could be done before or after browsing the booths!

Wicked 5K in Kennebunkport to benefit Partners for World Health - Sunday!

The 5th Annual Wicked 5K (Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1pm) has become the race to run in October! With amazing prizes and give-a-ways, most everyone leaves with something! The runners dress in fun and spooky costumes and run through a challenging course along the beautiful Kennebunkport roads. Race fees contribute to the Partners for World Health, based in Scarborough, ME. PWH helps to reduce medical waste while improving global health. Participants are encouraged to bring unneeded medical supplies: walkers, crutches, canes, surgical gloves, sealed syringes, BandAids, clean linens, skin care items, lotions, and diapers. At least five volunteers are needed to collect these items. Please contact Jill Babcock as soon as possible at jill@partnersforworldhealth.org if you are available, and she will get back to you with more details.

The Center works in collaboration with community partners such as Portland Adult Education, Spiral Arts, and Head Start to serve residents of the Parkside neighborhood through programming, housing, organizing, and advocacy. The King-Parkside Collaborative is an afterschool program providing academic support for 7th graders, offered twice a week. Volunteers are needed to provide homework help once a week on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30pm at Parkside or Thursdays from 2:30-4:30pm at King Middle School. Volunteers who can commit for the full academic year are preferred, but a minimum commitment of three months is possible.

The purpose of the walk is to increase awareness of blindness and vision loss in Maine. The walk also serves as a fundraiser for the agency so the Iris Network can continue to provide a variety of vital services to Mainers who are blind and experiencing vision loss throughout Maine. All proceeds provide training, education, and support for people with vision loss and blindness. Registration cost is $15/adult and $5/children under twelve. Hardy Girls Healthy Women's (HGHW) mission is to provide girls with services that help them experience equality, independence, and safety in their everyday lives. HGHW is looking for volunteers to run Girls' Coalition Groups in the Greater Portland area. Following an evidence-based curriculum, Girls' Coalition Groups offer a space where girls can feel safe, free to express themselves, become allies, and dig deeper into issues that are relevant to their lives.

How you can help: Be a "Muse" – Coalition groups, usually comprised of 8 to 10 middle school girls, are run by two co-facilitators (Muses). A muse is someone who supports and listens to the girls, without judging, and nurtures their learning and critical thinking skills by providing an open and safe environment. It is a strengths-based, rather than needs-based, approach, and is a mutual relationship of solidarity.

Responsibilities:

-Attend a three hours Muse orientation

-Co-facilitate girls' groups, which meet 1 hours/wk during school hours

-Participate in ongoing support from HGHW staff at least 3 times/semester

Portland High School – English Language Learner (ELL) Volunteers

Portland High School needs volunteers to assist multilingual students in their academic subjects and acquisition of English language skills. The time commitment can be as little to one hour per week. There are two immediate needs. The first is supporting multilingual students who have transitioned from ELL classes into college prep courses (flexible). The second need is assisting lower level ELL students with their acquisition of England and basic academic subjects (Tues and Thurs 2:15-3:45pm). Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland was founded in 1985. Their commitment is to developing and uplifting families and communities. The organization has expanded to now serve the 28 communities in the greater Portland area. In nearly three decades they've built 57 homes, served more than 200 people with stable, affordable housing, engaged hundreds of business and civic partners, and enlisted the support of thousands of volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland is a homeownership program where the homeowners are just as invested in the completion of their home through minimal funds and sweat-equity. Fight Back Festival – great for student groups!

This is the Cancer Community Center's largest annual fundraiser. With a goal of raising over $110,000, they are in need of 250 volunteers to make the day run smoothly. They need help in the week leading up to the event (9/22-9/26) for setup and on the day of the festival for registration, run/bike route support & cheerleaders, finish line support, food preparation & cooking, clean up, kid's activities, parking & traffic control, and more. The Portland Mentoring Alliance was established in 1992. During the past nineteen years, volunteers from businesses, organizations and colleges have been matched with Portland High School students to create supportive mentoring relationships .The program focuses on academic success, post-secondary planning and socialization as experienced in a one-on-one relationship. USM has many students and some staff and faculty who volunteer for PMA each year. Mentoring is a chance to contribute to the community by having an impact on a young person's life.
