Back-To-School Health and Safety Tips

Oconto Falls – As a new school year approaches, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital encourages everyone to make the health and safety of their family a priority. Every parent wants their child to have a successful year, and taking time to consider their needs for health and safety can help them start the year off right.

1. Make healthy choices. Talk to your child about healthy food choices at home and at school.

2. Play sports safely. If your child participates in sports, schedule a sports physical with your doctor and speak with your child about sports safety. Make sure your child has required safety equipment for her/his sport, and know the concussion ABCs—assess the situation, be alert for signs and symptoms, and contact a health care professional.

3. Be good to your back. Choose a backpack with wide shoulder straps and make sure your child uses both straps evenly across the back. Having all the weight over one shoulder can lead to muscle strain. Advise your child to pack lightly. A backpack should never weigh more than 10-20 percent of your child’s body weight.

4. Fight the spread of germs. Before your child goes back to school make sure he/she understands the importance of proper hand washing. Soap and water can do wonders in reducing your child's risk of illness. A child should wash his/her hands properly before eating and after using the restroom.

5. Turn off the screens. Set a limit to screen time of two hours or less each day.

6. Get enough sleep. School-aged children need at least 10 hours a day of sleep.

7. Be safe while on the roads. Children should always use a seatbelt and be placed in car seats appropriate for their age. Talk to your child about safety while at the bus stop and crossing roads.

Auxiliary Seeking Volunteers for New Welcome Center

Oconto Falls – The Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital is seeking volunteers to staff the hospital’s new Welcome Center, which is set for completion later this fall. Construction of the Welcome Center begins September 6, but training for volunteers will be provided prior to the Welcome Center’s opening.

Volunteers act as ambassadors for the hospital, welcoming patients and offering assistance. The ideal candidate should be physically able to escort patients and visitors and able to push a wheelchair when needed. Volunteers will work in pairs for four-hour shifts on a weekly basis, creating an opportunity for couples, friends and neighbors to work as a team. The Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital would like to have at least 10 volunteers and encourages high school students to volunteer before and after school hours.

“Volunteering offers opportunities to give back, help others and make connections,” said Regina Boettcher, Volunteer Services Clerical Support Assistant, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital.

The new Welcome Center will be the “first stop” for patients and visitors at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital. Patients will be greeted by a family-friendly space and people in their community who can show them where to go.

“We want the people in the community to know we are there to serve them and make their visit with us as pleasant as possible,” said Chris Kocken, Director of Volunteer Services, HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division.

Golf Classic Tees Off on Saturday, Sept. 17

Oconto Falls – The HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Golf Classic will be held at River Island Golf Course, 100 River Island Drive in Oconto Falls on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The 9-hole scramble is scheduled to tee off at approximately 2 p.m., with dinner on the grill featured at approximately 6 p.m. This is a popular event with limited space, so participants are encouraged to register early!

Registration is now open to golfers and guests at www.scmhgolfclassic.eventbrite.com. Tickets for individual golfers are $60 and include green fees, cart, snack bag, dinner, tees and balls, one drink ticket and five raffle tickets. Those who do not wish to golf and would like to attend the dinner portion of the event can purchase tickets for $20 to include dinner, one drink ticket and five raffle tickets.

The HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Golf Classic is hosted by HSHS St. Clare Foundation, the supporting, charitable arm for HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls. This month, the public is invited to a free informational program about mindful eating and regulating your food intake while living with diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that affects many areas of a person’s daily life and these information sessions offer a variety of ideas to maintain and improve health. This session will show people with diabetes how to pay careful attention to what they eat every day.

“What Is A Hospitalist?” Free Presentation for Seniors Thursday, Aug. 11

Oconto Falls – When someone is hospitalized, they may be cared for by a hospitalist. In 2015, Prevea Health launched a dedicated team of hospitalists at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls. But, what is a hospitalist and how are they different from a patient’s regular doctor?

On Thursday, Aug. 11, local seniors are invited to learn more about the role of hospitalists during a presentation by Dr. Emmanuel O. Odeyemi, who is part of the Prevea Health hospitalist team at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital. The presentation is free and includes a complimentary meal.

Sports Physicals Proceeds to Benefit Area Schools’ Athletic Departments

Oconto Falls –Health centers in Gillett, Mountain, Oconto Falls, Lena, Oconto, Marinette and Suring are accepting appointments for sports physical examinations for athletes wanting to participate in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) sport.

Sports physicals are performed by Prevea Health clinicians and licensed athletic trainers. “We are examining everything from heart issues to musculoskeletal issues,” said Mike LaMere, Prevea Sports Medicine Outreach Manager. “We want to make sure athletes are healthy and ready to compete.”

Sports physical examinations cost $20 and all proceeds will be donated to the athletic department of the school the athlete/patient plays for. This includes general and vascular surgery, colonoscopies, colon and breast cancer surgery, hernia repair, advanced laparoscopic surgeries, minimally invasive surgeries and new treatments for varicose veins. The surgery center team is led by Richard McNutt MD, FACS and Tina DeGroot, APRN.

Auxiliary Presents $40,000 Check to HSHS St .Clare Memorial Hospital and Honors Dedicated Volunteers at Annual Luncheon

Oconto Falls – The Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital held its annual luncheon in Oconto Falls on Wednesday, May 4 to recognize members who have reached milestones in their volunteer hours and to present the hospital with a generous $40,000 donation.

The Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital was able to raise $40,000 through various fundraisers, including an annual salad luncheon, Love Basket Silent Auction, Holiday Bake Sale and Raffle, book fairs, linen, uniform and cookie sales and the Christmas Memory Tree. The Auxiliary was also able to raise money with revenues from the HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Gift Shop. HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital.

“HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital is beyond grateful for the work, dedication and commitment of the Auxiliary,” said Dan DeGroot, COO, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital. “This money will be used to purchase a variety of new and advanced medical technologies that will provide our patients with an enhanced quality of care.”

New technologies to be purchased for HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital include Telestroke, which will provide faster, improved care for stroke patients. The technology connects stroke patients and emergency department physicians with highly-skilled stroke experts with the click of a button.

In addition to the check presentation, the Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital also presented pins to members who reached milestones in their volunteer hours, since joining the Auxiliary:

“People who join the Auxiliary of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital do a great service to our community,” said Mary Lemmen, Auxiliary treasurer and member since 1988. “It’s also a wonderful opportunity meet and work with new people.”

Oconto Falls – Community seniors are invited to a free presentation on living with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) hosted by HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital and Prevea Health on May 5.

GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion as a result of GERD.

Dr. Richard McNutt, General and Vascular Surgeon at HSHS St. Clare Regional Surgery Center, will lead the presentation at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, 855 S. Main St. in Oconto Falls.

Oconto Falls – Residents in Oconto County now have access to more types of adult and pediatric surgical procedures performed by a team of highly-skilled surgical experts, closer to home. On April 11, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls opened the new, HSHS St. Clare Regional Surgery Center.

HSHS St. Clare Regional Surgery Center is located on the campus of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital. It serves as the home-base for a newly-dedicated surgical team lead by Richard McNutt MD, FACS and Tina DeGroot, APRN. Patients who require surgery visit HSHS St. Clare Regional Surgery Center for consultations and follow-up appointments; surgical procedures take place within the hospital’s remodeled operating rooms.

Free Heart Valve Disease Presentation for Seniors

Oconto Falls – Community seniors are invited to a free presentation on heart valve disease hosted by HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital and Prevea Health on March 10.

Heart valve disease is any disease affecting one or more of the four valves of the heart. When treating heart disease, it’s important to continually monitor its condition. Doing so, doctors are able to treat the condition before symptoms arise. This can prevent damage that may be irreversible.

Dr. John Seccombe, a cardiothoracic surgeon and heart valve disease expert at Prevea Health will lead the presentation at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital. Dr. Seccombe is passionate about helping people achieve life-long, healthy living and is a frequent speaker at community events throughout Northeast Wisconsin.

Pharmacies and Prescription Medication-Filling Services Get New Names, Looks

Oconto County – Residents in the communities of Oconto, Oconto Falls, Gillett, Lena, Pulaski, Mountain and Suring who utilize pharmacies and prescription services with the “HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital” name will notice those locations have a new name and look.

Depending on the service each location provides, it is now identified as either HSHS Pharmacy or HSHS Prescription Services. While the names at each location have changed, each continues to offer the same high-quality services available under their former names.

An HSHS Pharmacy provides prescription and over-the-counter medications; friendly, knowledgeable pharmacists and staff; a 24-hour, automated phone line to fill and refill prescriptions; and free mail delivery and email notifications to alert patients when prescriptions are ready.

An HSHS Prescription Services location provides all of the same amenities with the exception of an on-staff, in-person pharmacist. At HSHS Prescription Services locations, a pharmacist based at an HSHS Pharmacy location will consult with patients via real-time, video technology.

HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center Set to Open Feb. 1, 2016

Oconto Falls – Advanced wound care services will soon be available in Oconto County with the addition of the HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, 855 Main St. in Oconto Falls.

HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center will open Feb. 1, 2016 in the lower level of the hospital as a full-service wound center utilizing the most proven and trusted techniques in wound management, including a state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) supercharges the body’s healing ability with concentrated oxygen to help resolve painful, stubborn wounds and infections. HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center also specializes in the use of bioengineered tissues, which stimulate the body to heal wounds by creating new skin. While wound care services have been provided at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital for several years, advanced treatments like HBOT and bioengineered tissues were not available.

“In the past, people would have to travel to Green Bay or Iron Mountain to receive advanced wound care services,” said Jane Charnetski, Director of Regional Wound Care and Hyperbaric Centers for Hospital Sisters Health System – Eastern Wisconsin Division. “Now, our patients have access to advanced, high-quality wound care close to home. This is especially important for patients who are elderly, disabled or have multiple health conditions which make it difficult to travel.”

Anyone with a wound that has not healed after 2 to 4 weeks of standard care should seek treatment at a wound center. Many people who have non-healing wounds are elderly and/or have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation, leg swelling or decreased mobility.

From now until Feb. 1, wound care services currently offered at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital will still be available to patients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Beginning Feb. 1, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center will open to patients five days a week, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Founded in 1921 as Community Memorial Hospital, in 2014, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital became the fourteenth hospital in Hospital Sisters Health System. As an affiliate of Hospital Sisters Health System, we draw on the history of St. Francis of Assisi as we move to continue serving the health care needs of our area in Christ’s healing ministry, caring for all people.
