Samsung Galaxy S III Coming Soon

Just a few days ago Samsung announced the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III, and now Canadian carriers that have committed to carrying the device include - Bell, TELUS, Rogers, SaskTel, Videotron, WIND Mobile and Mobilicity. The smartphone that was "designed for humans and inspired by nature" boasts many updated features from the Galaxy S II, including voice recognition software, a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, more memory (the S III will also be available in a 64GB model, as well as having the ability to support 64GB microSDHC cards), a more powerful battery (2100 mAh over the S II's 1650 mAh) and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. The camera on the device remains the same as it's predecessor at 8.0 MP, but improvements have been made to the camera app. Carrier model specifications, pricing and availability should be announced in the coming weeks, but we expect a launch date sometime in June.

Nova Scotia Aims to Regulate Cellphone Fees

Following in the footsteps of Ontario, who earlier this month announced a proposed legislation, Nova Scotia has also announced its plans to regulate the mobile phone industry.

If the legislation is put into place, the people of Nova Scotia will clearly know what their contract entails, and will no longer have to fear excessive or hidden overage fees. The amendments to the province's Consumer Protection Act would cap cancellation fees to $50 and require carriers to provide minimum monthly costs of service in contracts and advertising. Companies would also have to inform customers of contract changes that would increase their bills and would be restricted from automatically renewing or extending contracts.

Industry regulation would see:

Cancellation fees capped at $50;
All-inclusive minimum monthly costs stated in advertising and contracts;
Carriers required to inform customers of contract changes and/or rate increases;
Restriction from automatically renewing or extending contracts;
Carriers required to work with the government as it implements measures to combat cyberbullying.

The amendment would see Nova Scotia joining Quebec (Quebec's Bill 60 took effect in 2010) and Manitoba (who recently announced legislation will come into effect September 15, 2012).

Today Samsung Canada announced that Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) would be available on select Galaxy devices, and will continue rolling out to other devices and carriers over the next few months.

Android 4.0 features a new user-interface with improved multi-tasking, notifications, Wi-Fi hotspot, a full Web browsing experience and innovations such as Face Unlock, which uses the front-facing camera for facial recognition to unlock the smartphone.

Manitoba Announces New Cellphone Legislation

Good news for Manitobans! Similar to Quebec's Bill 60, Manitoba's upcoming new cellphone contract legislation, The Consumer Protection Amendment Act (Cell Phone Contracts), will create greater transparency in cellphone contracts and create fair practices for cellphone services.

Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Rondeau says "These new rules will ensure Manitobans will have clearer cellphone contracts, fair cancellation fees and reasonable rules for unilateral changes to contracts."

As of September 15, 2012, the new legislation will require carriers to:

Provide a copy of the contract to consumers before the contract begins;
Fully disclose and explain all charges, fees and terms;
Be restricted from making unilateral changes to contract terms;
Allow consumers to cancel contracts at any time for a reasonable cancellation fee;
Include the minimum monthly cost in cellphone advertisements;
Be restricted from making automatic cellphone contract renewals; and
Increase consumer protection for cellphone contracts not made in person (including contracts made over the Internet).

The legislation will still allow companies to charge reasonable fees when consumers end contracts early in order to recover costs for equipment provided or subsidized as a selling incentive.

Under the new legislation, the Consumer Protection Office can issue administrative penalties to carriers for non-compliance of up to $1,000 for the first offence, $3,000 for the second offence and $5,000 for all subsequent offences.

Ontario Proposes Cellphone Legislation

The Canadian Press - Too many Ontarians are being hit with unexpected charges on their cellphone and smart phone bills, Consumer Services Minister Margarett Best said Thursday as she promised new legislation to govern wireless service contracts.

The issue is consistently among the top 10 consumer complaints to her ministry, Best told reporters.

"One common problem we are responding to is the cell shock that many consumers experience upon opening their monthly bill," she said.

"The cell shock results from consumers being surprised for charges on services they were not aware they would be charged for or services they did not know would cost extra."

The proposed legislation will require:

Cap the cost of cancelling a contract and charge only a "modest fee" for leaving fixed-term contracts.
Notify consumers of any changes to their contract.
Get consumers' consent to renew, extend or amend a contract.
Use plain language in contracts.
Include all-inclusive price advertising for cellphone plans.
Not charge consumers for services while devices under warranty are being repaired.
Give notice to consumers who are about to incur additional charges for exceeding service limits.

"There is a need to provide additional protection for consumers in their agreements with (wireless) service providers," she said.

"Our government's goal is to provide greater clarity and fairness for Ontario's consumers with respect to cellphone agreements," Best said.

"The cancellation fees are grossly excessive, the automatic renewal features that are imposed on consumers are unfair and biased," said Liberal backbencher David Orazietti, who sponsored previous bills trying to rein in cellphone charges.

"It's important to ensure that consumers know what the full price of getting into a contract will mean," he said.

"The advertising aspect needs to include the highest, most prominent price, that's got to be the most visible for consumers to understand the true cost of entering into these contracts."

The bill would also require service providers to notify consumers when they are about to exceed the minutes in their contract before they rack up extra charges.

Orazietti said the federal government isn't taking steps to ensure there's real competition among wireless providers in Canada, so provinces like Ontario and Quebec are trying to do what they can to protect consumers.

"I say to the federal government the voluntary code of conduct is a farce, it's insulting to consumers and it does not address the competition issue and the costs that consumers need to bear," he said.

"It gets back to a belief federally that there's adequate competition. Clearly there's not."

Ontario and Quebec are introducing legislation "where they have the Constitutional and legal authority to do so, which is around the (wireless) contracts," said Orazietti.

"I would suspect other provinces will follow suit and there will be an appetite in other provinces to take similar measures given the steps that Quebec has taken and that we're taking."

There is no word when the Ontario Liberal government plans to introduce the bill in the legislature.

HD Voice Now Available at Bell & Virgin Mobile

Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile have joined WIND Mobile with the roll-out of HD Voice. Available on the Bell mobility 4G HSPA+ network, the enhancement is designed to give you the clearest call quality available - richer sound quality, significant reduction in background noise and an ease of voice recognition (when there is more than one person speaking).

There are a few conditions - both callers must be using a Bell Mobility or Virgin Mobile SIM card, both callers must be within the Bell 4G HSPA+ network, and both callers must have a HD Voice compatible phone.

Currently, the following phones are compatible with HD Voice (expect to see more in 2012):

TELUS Samsung Galaxy Note Coming Soon

The LTE-capable Samsung Galaxy Note will soon be heading to TELUS. Featuring a huge 5.3" Super AMOLED display, 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 8.0 MP camera with full HD video, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and up to 48 GB of memory (16 GB internal + up to 32 GB microSD), the Galaxy Note packs a punch. This smartphone also comes with a stylus ("S pen - advanced smart pen"), which neatly stores in the back of the device, comes pre-loaded with Google Maps turn-by-turn voice guidance navigation and Google Maps in 3D, and is Skype capable. No word yet on pricing or a release date, but we expect to see the Galaxy Note in stores sometime in February.

Rogers to Update Early Cancellation Policy in January 2012

In light of regulation updates in Quebec and Manitoba regarding consumer protection (known as "Bill 60" and "Bill 35"), Rogers will apparently be updating their Cancellation Policy nationwide. This means if a customer decides to cancel their service with Rogers or Fido, the customer will pay the remaining subsidized amount of their handset plus a $12.50 "Economic Inducement" fee.

For example, if you get the Apple iPhone 4S 16GB for $159 ($649 no contract) on a 3-year agreement (36-months) and decided in the first year to cancel, the new cancellation fee would be calculated by taking the Hardware Subsidiary x ( Remaining Months Left On Term / Total Term Months ) + the Economic Inducement Fee. In other words, the new cancellation fee would be ($649 - $159) x ( 24 / 36 ) + $12.50 = $339.17.

The new policy will apply to new activations or renewals on January 22 or later.

Facebook iPhone App Updated to Support Timeline

With the release of Timeline last week Facebook has updated their iOS app to support it. The Facebook also appears to run a little zippier with faster photo uploads as well.

WIND Mobile Launches in London

Today, WIND Mobile officially launched in London, Ontario with the announcement of the WINDthanks London Community Grant. As a way to introduce itself to the community WIND will give a $10,000 grant to one organization or charity in London to support a project that brings positive change to the community.

With its launch, WIND Mobile becomes the first new wireless in London in over a decade. Since launching nearly two years ago, WIND Mobile has now secured more than 350,000 subscribers and expanded into markets like Waterloo and Niagara regions this year with plans for further network expansion throughout the country. Some of the cities where WIND will launch next year include Barrie, Peterborough, Windsor, Kingston and Belleville in Ontario as well as Mission in British Columbia. WIND will also be the first new carrier to expand to the east coast, Manitoba and Saskatchewan when it launches in Halifax, Winnipeg and Regina in 2012.

On top of providing positive change to wireless consumers, WIND is also dedicated to giving back to the communities where it operates. The WINDthanks Grant allows Londoners to make recommendations to WIND about projects that they think will make a difference in their community. Projects will be judged based on how the project will benefit the community, the innovation, uniqueness or need for the project in the community and the support the project receives from Londoners.

Individuals, organizations and charities can nominate projects for the grant online at www.WINDmobile.ca/WINDthanks. The deadline for submissions is January 13th, 2012 and the grant recipient will be announced in February 2012.

Rogers LTE Devices Now Available

Long Term Evolution (LTE) devices are now available at Rogers in areas with LTE coverage. Rogers started shipping phones to customers on the national reserve list on Tuesday. The new devices include the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Raider smartphones, HTC Jetstream tablet, and Sierra Wireless 313U Rocket Stick (which has been available for a few weeks now). In the coming weeks Rogers will also be releasing the Sierra Wireless 754S LTE Rocket Mobile Hotspot.

This year, Rogers will have LTE devices capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Today, devices are capable of downloading up to 75 Mbps and Rogers LTE customers are experiencing typical download speeds ranging from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. As device selection evolves, customers will be able to take advantage of the full potential of the Rogers LTE network and maximum theoretical download speeds will increase to up to 150 Mbps.

The devices are not available at all Rogers locations, so it is recommended to contact your local Rogers dealer to see what they have in stock before heading out.

Apple Expected to Announce iPhone 5 This Week

The Associated Press - Apple fans are amped. The computer and gadget maker is expected to announce a new, more powerful version of its wildly popular smartphone this week - more than a year after it unveiled the iPhone 4.

The new iPhone is expected to have a number of changes, the biggest of which will likely be under the hood: the inclusion of Apple's latest iOS mobile software, iOS 5, which has been slated for release this fall.

IOS 5 will include things such as wireless device setup and content synching and beefed-up camera, e-mail and Web browsing apps. A new service called iMessage will allow iOS 5 users to send text messages to each other over Wi-Fi or wireless carriers' data networks, while a folder called Newsstand will corral newspaper and magazine app subscriptions in one place to make it easier to find them. When it comes out, the software will also be available for Apple's iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS and the two most recent generations of the iPod Touch.

A new iPhone is also expected to include Apple's forthcoming iCloud service, which will store content such as music, documents, apps and photos on Apple's servers and let you access them wirelessly on numerous devices.

As for hardware, a new iPhone isn't expected to look that much different from the iPhone 4, though it could be thinner and have a bigger screen. The existing iPhone is 0.37 inches thick and has a display measuring 3.5 inches at the diagonal.

An improved camera is anticipated, too. The existing iPhone has a 5-megapixel camera on its rear. A number of recently released smartphones have moved to 8-megapixel cameras.

One of the most notable hardware changes many industry watchers are predicting is the inclusion of a more powerful chip: Apple's dual-core A5 processor, which is the same chip it uses in its current iPad. The iPhone 4 runs on Apple's older A4 chip, and the move to a more capable chip should improve things such as multitasking, opening apps and gaming.

As for when a new iPhone would be available, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu suspects it would be fairly soon after it is announced. His research indicates production plans Apple set with its suppliers in Asia called for manufacturing to start in October, so he would expect it to be available within a couple weeks of its announcement.

Rogers Expands LTE Network

Rogers Communications Inc. announced today its Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network service is now also live in Canada's three largest cities - Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Expanding upon Canada's first LTE network launched in Ottawa on July 7th, more than 5.5 million Canadians now have access to the world's fastest wireless network technology.

"We're thrilled to be the first carrier in Canada to offer LTE and the fastest mobile speeds to Canada's three largest provinces and to more Canadians than any other carrier in Canada," said John Boynton, Rogers Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "With Rogers LTE wireless network coverage, customers have access to speeds similar to broadband connections, making it easier for people to use their devices to download apps, stream HD videos and music or play on-line games, with virtually no delays or buffering."

Rogers also announced it will launch the Rogers exclusive HTC Jetstream LTE tablet, the fastest tablet in Canada, on October 18. TELUS' HSPA+ dual cell network now online in Atlantic Canada offers manufacturer's rated peak wireless internet download speeds of up to 42 megabits per second with an expected average of 7-14 megabits per second¹ and is now available to 70 per cent of Canadians coast-to-coast.

Bell Begins 4G LTE Network Rollout

Bell Mobility today announced the launch of its next generation 4G LTE wireless network service in areas of Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph.

With super-fast Internet and data access speeds for both business users and consumers, 4G LTE from Bell offers HD quality online TV and video; wireless video conferencing and chat with quality previously available only on wireline or high-speed Wi-Fi connections; unprecedented mobile download times for apps, large attachments, presentations and apps (with VPN compatibility for secure file access); and mobile gaming on a whole new level, with stand-out graphics and video quality.

Bell's 4G LTE roll-out will bring coverage to additional Canadian markets this year and through 2012. Bell is focused on an urban rollout first, with the timing of broader rural and remote coverage deployments contingent on the outcome of Industry Canada's 700 MHz spectrum auction.

LTE Mobile Internet Access

Saskatchewan to Get New Area Code

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that starting in May 2013, 10-digit local dialling will be required for all local calls made in Saskatchewan, except for calls made from Kinoosao or Uranium City. The CRTC also announced that a new area code, 639, would be introduced in the province.

The transition to 10-digit dialling will begin on February 25, 2013, and will be gradually introduced over the following weeks. During this transition period, customers who dial 7 digits will hear an announcement advising them to include the area code in future calls, after which their call will be completed. 10-digit dialling will become mandatory by May 11, 2013.

At the same time, in order to prevent a shortage of telephone numbers in Saskatchewan, the CRTC is introducing a new area code, 639, as of May 25, 2013. This means that customers seeking new telephone numbers could be given a number starting with area code 639. Existing customers will keep their current area code and phone numbers.

These measures are being implemented in response to the Canadian Numbering Administrator's notification that Saskatchewan is expected to run out of telephone numbers by August 2013.

Rogers LTE Network Goes Live in Ottawa

Rogers Communications Inc. announced today the commercial launch of Canada's first Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, bringing the latest global wireless technology to the Ottawa region. Rogers also announced that network rollout to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal will occur this fall, and that LTE-enabled smartphones from Samsung and HTC will be available later this year.

LTE delivers unparalleled connectivity and increased usage capacity to provide an unrivalled mobile experience for Ottawa customers, and soon, to other Canadians. Rogers LTE will expand to a further 21 markets by the end of 2012, changing the way Canadians use their mobile devices for work and play by enabling fast mobile Internet in any location, on any LTE-enabled device. LTE delivers higher speeds and lower latency than 4G HSPA+ which means a better experience for customers using highly interactive applications like multi-player gaming and rich multi-media communications. It will deliver more usage capacity which means more users can access the network at top speeds simultaneously.

Rogers is working with Ericsson to build Canada's first LTE network. Rogers and Ericsson began conducting comprehensive technical trials of LTE in Ottawa and Montreal last fall. The tests measured data speeds, quality of signals and interoperability with Rogers' existing 4G HSPA+ wireless network. The tests confirm that Rogers LTE network in Ottawa is significantly faster than any other Canadian wireless network. At launch the Rogers LTE Rocket Stick will be capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 75 Mbps on the Rogers LTE Network. Typical download speeds can range from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps, which is significantly faster than the speeds Canadians experience on any other network today. As device selection evolves, maximum theoretical download speeds will increase to up to 150 Mbps.

Ottawa is now Canada's fastest city, with LTE network coverage spanning a broad area from Arnprior, Ontario in the west to Orléans, Ontario in the east and includes the Hull and Gatineau regions of Quebec.

Yet another Android device will soon be joining the TELUS smartphone lineup. The HTC Status - powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense Landscape - is Canada's first device to feature a Facebook share button to share information instantly from almost anywhere. Bell today announced it will introduce its 4G wireless broadband network to Saskatchewan customers next week, offering the fastest wireless speeds, largest coverage area and the leading smartphones and other data devices available only on Canada's Best Network.

Samsung phone used to send Tweet from the Top of the World

How great is this? A British mountain climber and guide, none other than Kenton Cool, has sent what it thought to be the first ever Tweet from the summit of Mount Everest. The ascent, the ninth for the mountaineer was sponsored by Samsung, who naturally supplied the Galaxy S2 used to send the record breaking message.

The Tweet read: "Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!"

He is not the first to use a mobile phone at the top of the world though - and the first ever phone call was made by another British mountaineer, Rod Baber in May 2007 - who was sponsored by Motorola for the record breaking attempt.

That earlier call was made possible as a upgrade to the local surface level network by China Mobile to put a base station within line of sight of the summit. Since then, more base stations have been installed in the area, especially on the Nepalese side of the mountain.

Other notable high altitude base stations can be found on the summit of Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Apple Planning Automatic OS Updates for iPhone 5

Apple is reported to be considering switching to smaller OS updates, delivered over-the-air for its next generation iPhone 5 instead of the current, sometimes lengthy OS update delivered via a USB cable and iTunes.

Citing multiple sources, the Apple watching website 9to5mac said that Apple is in talks with the mobile networks to deploy such a facility for its next smartphone. Although incremental updates are individually smaller than Apple's usual large deployments, they collectively add up to a large amount of data and the networks need to be consulted before each update is sent out.

Using networks to deploy updates can also lead to staggered deployments where some customers are able to gain the new OS quicker than others if the networks need to defer the upgrades due to capacity constraints.

Although some OTA updates software providers claim to be able to update a smartphone OS without impacting on the handset content, it would be expected that Apple will deploy its long-expected cloud based back-up service before offering OTA updates to the OS.

Typically, it can be expected that the cloud-based OTA would be charged for as a premium service, with the iTunes based service remaining as free.

Smartphones Will Account for Over Half of Phone Sales in 2015

Total handsets sold to end users globally will reach 1.46 billion in 2011, while smartphone sales will account for 27 percent of total handset sell-through. Driven by demand for inexpensive Android models, this figure will almost double to 53 percent in 2015, according to Pyramid Research's quarterly smartphone forecast released this week.

"Much of the projected total market growth in 2011 will come from the Africa and Middle East (AME) region, which will see a strong demand for low-end smartphone models, ultra low-cost handsets and dual-SIM and full touch-screen feature phones," says Bokun.

"The main drivers of the demand in the developed markets will be the launches of a number of flagship high-end devices and new features and technologies," Bokun explains. "However, inexpensive smartphone models, particularly those from Huawei and ZTE, also will be in high demand in some of the richest Western European, Asian and North American markets."

Android-based smartphones will continue to shake the smartphone world, but Pyramid's recent findings predict that by 2015, Windows Phone will overtake Android and other major competitors and establish itself as the leader in the smartphone OS space.

Apple Updates Tracking Software

Apple has released a software update to fix a problem that enabled its mobile devices to collect and store customers' location data, making good on a promise it made last week.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, who is on medical leave, had promised to adjust the company's mobile software to store less location data after a firestorm broke out over whether Apple was monitoring the whereabouts of its customers.

The update, which is available through its iTunes stores and automatically pops up when an iPhone or iPad is synced, said it "contains changes to the iOS crowd-sourced location database cache."

The company said in the update that the software fix reduces the size of the location storage, ensures that the device no longer backs the location information in iTunes, and enables the iPhone or iPad to stop collecting data when Location Services is turned off.

Apple's software update comes ahead of a U.S. senate subcommittee hearing on mobile privacy on May 10. Representatives from both Apple and Google Inc have agreed to testify at the hearing.

Concerns about tracking came to a head earlier this month when two computer programmers presented research showing the iPhone was logging locations.

Apple has denied that it was tracking the movements of its iPhone customers but has acknowledged that it does keep a database of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers. This has raised concerns from privacy advocates, who say the process would make it possible, for instance, for someone with access to a person's computer to retrieve information about their movements.

WIND Mobile Introduces HD Voice, Successfully Trials 4G

WIND Mobile today announced their successful 4G live trial and introduction of High Definition Voice Calling (HD Voice) to the North American marketplace as one of only a few wireless carriers in the world to offer the advanced technology on their new and evolving all-IP 3G+ network.

WIND has been building a technologically advanced 3G+, all-IP network from the ground up, and building faster and further than any other new entrant to the Canadian marketplace. Recent Long Term Evolution (LTE) testing confirms that the network is in line to advance to the next evolution of 4G compatible technologies.

LTE is the next generation (4G) mobile network technology and successor of 3G. LTE takes a huge leap forward in the way network resources such as spectrum, bandwidth and capacity are used, and how the network is deployed and managed. LTE delivers much faster speeds (up to 100Mbps) with lower latencies and superior customer experience with strengthened coverage and seamless handovers between sites. Manitoba Gets 3G+ Coverage March 31

After a long, much anticipated wait, Manitobans will finally have access to high-speed wireless voice and data services. Today both MTS and Rogers announced that their expanded 3G+/HSPA+ networks will go live on March 31. Customers will be able to purchase the latest devices including Android, BlackBerry and iPhone, and access data speeds of up to 21 Mbps. And coverage will increase considerably, with service soon to be available to 96-97% of Manitoba's population.

Rogers' Upcoming Manitoba Coverage

Rogers stated in its news release today "This major network expansion will both improve and considerably expand Rogers' wireless coverage in Manitoba. Rogers already offers service in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba and is expanding into Manitoba's northern communities while, at the same time, upgrading the existing Rogers' coverage footprint in Manitoba to high speed 3G+/HSPA+. The new network will significantly increase Rogers 3G+/HSPA+ coverage to service 96 per cent of Manitobans as it brings choice to many new markets including Thompson, The Pas, Flin Flon and more."

MTS' Upcoming Manitoba Coverage

MTS wireless has invested over $100 million in their new network, and will also be offering up exclusive MTS bundled services. Their new HSPA network will provide more extensive, reliable coverage in Manitoba, and "faster speeds than ever before and deliver next-generation broadband wireless services to 97 per cent of the population. Outside of Manitoba, MTS HSPA+ customers will be able to roam in more than 200 countries around the world." MTS will also continue to support its CDMA network, stating "MTS will also continue to sell and support an exciting lineup of its CDMA based handsets and operate its current CDMA wireless network in Manitoba to support existing MTS customers and carry other wireless roaming traffic. Bell Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7 Coming Soon

Bell has announced the upcoming launch of the Windows Phone 7 HTC HD7. Sporting the "the largest display in the world (4.3") on a Windows Phone 7 device", the HD7 also features a 5.0 MP camera with dual-LED flash and HD video capture, a kickstand for handsfree viewing, Xbox Live and Facebook integration, Office Mobile, Outlook and access to Zune's streaming service. Exclusive Bell services available at launch include Bell Live TV & Radio and Remote PVR. The HTC HD7 has a large 16 GB internal memory, but no microSD slot for expansion. It also features built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, plus all you standard messaging options.

The only pricing released right now stands at a steep $599.95, but we expect to see that drop with a contract when the device launches on February 10, 2011. We'll post more details and full pricing at launch.

Mobilicity to Bring Google's Nexus S

Mobilicity's CEO Dave Dobbins said that the Nexus S would indeed be headed to Canada.

"The Nexus S is going to everybody, so we'll have it. It will be AWS band. And Bell, TELUS and Rogers will have it. I mean everybody will have the phone. So nothing special about it... it will be all over the place... so the Nexus S will I think will be available in March", remarked Dobbin.

For the uninitiated, the next generation of Google phones, Nexus S has been developed together by Google and Samsung. It is paired up with a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and 16GB of memory. Claimed to be one of the fastest phones available, Nexus S is already loaded with Google apps, Internet Calling NFC support, and full web browsing. Nexus S users apparently receive software upgrades and new Google mobile apps as soon as they are made public.

Google Shows Honeycomb, the new Android 3.0

Google showed off the first preview of features in Honeycomb, its upcoming version of Android 3.0 designed for tablets, during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"We wanted our tablet experience to be better, not just bigger," said Mike Cleron, principal software engineer for Google.

"Honeycomb is the next version of the Android platform, designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. We've spent a lot of time refining the user experience in Honeycomb, and we've developed a brand new, truly virtual and holographic user interface. Many of Android's existing features will really shine on Honeycomb: refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. We've also made some powerful upgrades to the web browser, including tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing."

Honeycomb also features the latest Google Mobile innovations including Google Maps 5 with 3D interactions and offline reliability, access to over 3 million Google eBooks, and Google Talk, which now allows you to video and voice chat with any other Google Talk enabled device (PC, tablet, etc).

Gmail has been completely redesigned for tablets with Honeycomb. It displays columns with the left one listing folders, the middle a list of contacts and the right column showing recent messages.

Cleron also showed off Google Maps 5.0 with new features that were recently added. The audience sounded impressed with the feature that lets a user drag two fingers on the screen to tilt the map and show drawings of buildings.

Honeycomb receives notifications of new messages but includes a bit more data than in previous Android versions. For instance when a user receives an email, the notification that pops up includes a small phone of the person who sent the message.

Bell Samsung Rugby II Available December 16

Bell first announced its pending arrival back in October, and now the Samsung Rugby II is almost here. Although the phone doesn't officially launch until next Thursday, "all participating retailers are encouraged to sell the Samsung Rugby II as soon as product arrives in an effort to support Bell Mobility clients who are eagerly anticipating this device during the 2010 Holiday season".

The tri-band HSPA device is built to military standard 810G certification for vibration, shock, dust, extreme temperatures and rain, and will retail for $299.95.

Smart Phones Track Deals for Shoppers

Smart phones and tablet computers with the best GPS tracking and Internet access are expected to emerge this holiday season not only as top gifts but also as indispensable tools to make shopping easier, more efficient and more economical.

Deal-conscious consumers who are rapidly warming to online shopping can use their phones and iPads to locate merchandise, get directions to stores, research products and compare prices, all while on the go.

A National Retail Federation survey found that more than 1 in 4 of the estimated 60 million to 70 million smart phone users in the United States planned to use them to shop this holiday season. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, the number increases dramatically, to about half.

The effects on the shopping experience could be enormous as the number of smart phone and tablet-computer users grows.

Shoppers can scan a bar code with their smart phones to check the price of the item at stores all over town, and can also check reviews from other consumers to determine whether a gift will be a hit or a dud. Sometimes they find that online prices can be lower than at brick-and-mortar stores, particularly if the shipping is free. If the best price is at an online store with free shipping, shoppers can use their phones to order and pay for the item.

The new devices are a game-changing technology for retailers, who have been given a new vehicle to inexpensively engage and communicate with customers. If an item is moving slowly, retailers can mark it down and blast the sale information instantly to customers' cell phones. If a new shipment of a high-demand, previously out-of-stock product comes in, retailers quickly can notify customers of its availability.

"It's all about reaching customers where they are," said Bob Friedland, a spokesman for Toys R Us.

Sarah Ingham of Phoenix, Ariz., recently used her Android phone to visit two of her favourite stores: the Shop at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the MoMA Store at the Museum of Modern Art, both in New York.

"They have some incredible things," she said.

Simon Buckingham, CEO of Appitalism, a clearinghouse for smart phone apps, estimates there are more than 25,000 programs related to shopping and retail. This year, they include a growing number of applications related to Black Friday.

Most major retailers now offer free smart phone applications that allow consumers to connect to their websites with the touch of a button. On the sites, consumers can find the nearest store, check hours, peruse recent ads and fliers, chat on Facebook and Twitter pages, order products and pay for purchases.

For example, Target customers can download coupons to their smart phones that can be scanned at checkout. They also can use their phones to scan products' quick-response codes in the company's Christmas catalogue to access more information and make a purchase.

New Google Phones to Replace Wallets & Credit Cards

Google has been showing off its latest Android phone on the West Coast of America, which it says will double as a mobile wallet. In fact, the new handset will come equipped with software that will enable users to pay for goods and services instead of breaking out their credit cards. Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, said yesterday that support for the Near Field Communications technology is being integrated into the next version of Google's Android software, "Gingerbread", which, he said, will be introduced in a few weeks.

Speaking at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco, Schmidt commented, "One way to think about it is, this could replace your credit card." He predicted that there are likely to be some "500 new start-ups in the mobile payment space as these platforms emerge." He wants his company to partner with traditional credit card industry players, such as payment processors, rather than compete with them.

Of course, NFC technology is nothing new, indeed BWCS produced a report on how it could affect the mobile industry several years ago, however, interoperability with Google's Android software could drive the uptake of it. Android is currently the second most popular smart-phone operating system according to figures from Gartner Research, which places it behind Nokia's Symbian but ahead of the Apple iPhones.

Schmidt also said that his company's ability to offer smart-phone software with Internet-based services such as real-time driving directions and "live" foreign language translation, would distinguish Android from its rivals.

Bell Mobility today released its first smartphone running on the new Windows Phone 7 platform, the LG Optimus Quantum, the only Windows Phone 7 device available in Canada to feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard to accompany the touchscreen. The Optimus Quantum also "organizes information on six hubs - People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace and Office while the ScanSearch application brings together online and offline worlds with real-time shopping, dining, weather, entertainment and banking information." Other features include a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 5.0 MP camera with HD video, Office Mobile apps, Xbox LIVE integration, Zune Media player, WiFi and unique 'Live Tile' start screen. The LG Optimus Quantum is available starting from $99.95 on a 3-year term with minimum $50 voice and data plan.

Other Windows Phone 7 devices released today in Canada were the Samsung Focus at Rogers, and the HTC 7 Surround & LG Optimus 7 at TELUS.

TELUS HTC 7 Surround Windows Smartphone Now Available

TELUS released two new Windows Phone 7 devices today, the LG Optimus 7 and the HTC 7 Surround. The HTC 7 Surround comes loaded with features, including integrated Dolby Surround Sound with SRS enabled speakers, an integrated Zune Media player, a large, 3.8" touchscreen, 5.0 MP camera with HD/720p video, Wi-Fi, pre-installed Facebook application and unique slide-out dual stereo speakers and kickstand. TELUS services however are limited on this device to your standard text, picture and instant messaging, email and web browsing (TELUS mobile radio, TELUS mobile music, TELUS mobile TV, games and video messaging are not currently available). The HTC 7 Surround is available for the special introductory price of $99.99 with a 3-year term (regular 3-year term pricing is $299.99).

Other Windows Phone 7 devices launched today were the Samsung Focus at Rogers and the LG Optimus Quantum at Bell.

MTS Kyocera Rio E3100 Coming Soon

MTS has announced the Kyocera Rio E3100 handset will be available in time for the holidays. Stan Kurtas, Vice President of Marketing at MTS says "The Rio offers customers access to voice, email and text messages as well as music and other media. There is even a thread view for text messages so customers can keep track of their conversations." The Kyocera Rio E3100 also features a 2.8" resistive touchscreen with interactive touch feedback, up to 16 GB of additional storage via microSD, threaded view text messaging and a 1.3 MP camera with digital zoom and editing tools. The Kyocera Rio will be available from MTS for $0 with a 3-year term.

MTS Motorola Milestone A854 Coming Soon

MTS has announced it will soon launch the Motorola Milestone A854 (the Milestone is only currently available in Canada at TELUS - but not available in Manitoba or Saskatchewan). The Motorola Milestone A854 is an Android-powered device offering a more advanced mobile web experience with its fast processor, touchscreen and 3.7" widescreen display. Users can also access thousands of widgets and apps from the ever-expanding Android Market, and there is also access to a full suite of Google apps including YouTube, Gmail, Google Talk and Google Maps with Google Latitude. We're expecting to see more high-speed devices appear at MTS as they approach the switch to the HSPA+ network (expected to launch the first quarter of 2011).
No word on pricing yet.
