NASA Launches Smartphones into Space

On Sunday, April 21 NASA launched three HTC Nexus One smartphones into space with Orbital Science Corp.'s Antare rocket from the Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia.

As part of the Small Spacecraft Technology Program, three Android-powered HTC Nexus One devices are being orbited into space to determine whether or not consumer-grade smartphones can be used as main flight avionics of a capable satellite.

Transmissions from the trio of ‘PhoneSats,' which have been received at multiple locations on Earth, have indicated that they are operating normally thus far. Should these PhoneSats demonstrate the capability of being able to work as satellites in space, they could potentially allow engineers to build the lowest cost satellites ever launched into orbit.

Housed in a standard cubesat structure these PhoneSats are currently orbiting Earth, taking photos and sending radio messages.

The three devices are to remain in orbit for up to two weeks and will burn up as they re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

Bell Sony Xperia J Coming Soon

Bell has announced the second Xperia device to be added to their lineup, launching on March 27*. The Sony Xperia J will ship with Android 4.1, and features a 4.0-inch scratch-resistant display, 1 GHz processor, and 5.0 MP camera with VGA video recording. The handset will also come preloaded with the Sony WALKMAN app, and features xLoud technology, so you can "crank it up with xLoud loudness enhancement and use your phone as the ultimate DJ deck". And according to the Sony website, if you get your device before the end of the year, you're eligible for 50GB free online storage for life with Box. The Xperia J will be available at Bell in black or white. Pricing has not yet been released.
* UPDATE: On March 26 Bell announced the launch has been delayed to April 9, 2013.

Chatr today released the ZTE F160. This entry-level phone has a 2.4" colour display and a slim, lightweight design. This F160 features a 3.0 megapixel camera with digital zoom, and Bluetooth connectivity. This basic handset also comes with voice memo, calculator, calendar, an organizer and a currency converter. There's also a handy MP3 player to listen to your music, though with the limited memory, you'll need to invest in a microSD card. Available now at Chatr.

HTC One Coming Soon

HTC today announced its new flagship device, the HTC One. The smartphone will ship with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and will be available in Canada in the coming weeks. The updated HTC Sense 5 user interface will also introduce HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound. The One is made from a 'distinct zero-gap aluminium unibody', and features a monster 1.7 GHz quad-core processor, 13 MP camera with full HD video, and a large, vibrant 4.7" display. The HTC One will be available at Rogers, Bell, TELUS and Virgin Mobile. No pricing has been announced.

Sony today announced that the Xperia ZL will be heading to Canada this April! The UMX Companion is a simple, easy-to-use device that comes complete with a stand-up desk charger for easy viewing while charging. The display is only 2-inches, but the font size is adjustable for easier visibility ('Normal' and 'Large'). There is an 'Emergency Switch' which will call up to 3 SOS Help Voice numbers and send an emergency text message to up to 3 SOS Help SMS numbers, 3 quick dial numbers, and the handset is suitable for hearing aid devices (compatible to HAC M3/T3). TELUS HTC One X+ Coming Soon

TELUS today listed another device as 'Coming soon' on their website. The HTC One X+ is pretty similar to its predecessor, the notable differences being a more powerful processor, 4 times the internal memory, and updated Bluetooth (4.0), Android OS (4.1) and HTC UI (Sense 4+). The LTE capable One X+ also comes with Beats Audio, and you can get easy access to music via the HTC Music hub and Sync Manager. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Mobilicity Launches 4G Network

Mobilicity today added 4G speeds to their unlimited network, giving customers speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Along with the upgrade also comes the launch of the Huawei E366 Premium Data Stick, and two new Premium Data offerings targeting heavy data users.

The new Premium Data add-on provides 20GB of data per month, which Mobilicty states will give customers "fast and affordable access to 60 minutes of streaming video, 90 minutes of streaming music, 60 app, game or music downloads, 50 video or photo uploads, 80 webpage views AND 125 emails per day".

The new Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan, designed for use with the Huawei E366, enables "fast and affordable access to 1,400 web pages and 1,400 emails a week, plus the ability to download 850 songs, 300 apps and games and 24 hours of streaming video a month".

The Premium Data add-on can be added onto any Mobilicity regular rate plan for $20/month. The Huawei E366 is available for $79.99, and the Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan is priced at $50/month. The new premium plans and data stick are available at Mobilicity stores across Canada.

Carriers that will offer the device include Bell, TELUS, Rogers, SaskTel, Videotron, Mobilicity and WIND. The combination smartphone/tablet will come kitted out with a large 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a powerful 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 8.0 MP camera with full HD video capture, and the latest Android operating system, 4.1 Jelly Bean. Pricing looks to be similar across the board with a 3-year contract running from $199.99-$249.99, and the MSRP being $729.99. LG Optimus G Coming Soon

LG announced today that they will be bringing the Optimus G to Canada this fall. The high-end smartphone offers an elegant and sleek design, innovative user experience, longer battery life and powerful performance driven by Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad Core processor. The LTE-capable device also features a 4.7" True HD IPS display (1.6x clearer than AMOLED displays), the newest generation Adreno 320 GPU (3x faster than Adreno 224 for enhanced gaming and faster frame rates), and enhanced camera features (Time Catch Shot, Cheese Shutter, Smart Shutter, Low Light Shot Noise Reduction). On September 12th, Apple announced the iPhone 5, officially to launch September 21st. Pre-orders on the Apple US & Canada websites have already sold out (availability is now listed as 2 weeks). Pre-orders are also now available on the Bell, Virgin, Rogers, Fido, and TELUS websites (no word yet on Koodo) - available numbers are unknown, but no doubt limited. New Area Codes for Canadian Provinces

Looks like Canada is running short on phone numbers, as five more provinces are scheduled to receive new area codes over the next year. Area codes in their respective regions will co-exist, providing for a substantial increase in available telephone numbers without affecting existing numbers. The new area codes will not affect local calling areas, and will be introduced gradually depending on demand. Mandatory 10-digit dialling will also be introduced in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The introduction of these new area codes is the result of decisions by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

In the past, new area codes have already been successfully introduced to regions in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

New area codes to be introduced include:

British Columbia: The 236 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 250/604/778. Effective June 1, 2013.
Saskatchewan: The 639 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 306. Effective May 11, 2013.
Manitoba: The 431 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 204. Effective November 3, 2012.
Ontario: The 437 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 416/647. Effective March 25, 2013. The 365 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 905/289. Effective March 25, 2013.
Quebec: The 873 area code will be introduced in the region now served by 819. Effective September 15, 2012.

Other area codes will reach capacity in the next several years - Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, who share the 902 area code, are expected to run out of numbers by April, 2015.

There are some markets outside of the HSPA coverage in Manitoba where Bell is not yet able to sell or activate HSPA devices, or port-in clients from other carriers. Also, at present, roaming outside of the Bell HSPA network in Manitoba is not available. This means that wireless service is limited to certain network coverage areas - 911 will continue to be available as long as customers are in the coverage area of other carriers, but all other calls will not be connected, and SMS and data will not be available.

Virgin Mobile and PC Mobile customers will only be affected if they change from a CDMA device to an HSPA device - coverage will not be the same and they will only be serviced in the Bell HSPA foot print which is different from the CDMA.

Bell 4G LTE Speeds Now in Toronto

As of today, Bell customers in Toronto, Ontario have access to Bell's enhanced 4G LTE network, capable of speeds up to 150 Mbps. The network currently supports Sierra Wireless' U330 Turbo Stick and 763 Turbo Hotspot, with more devices becoming available later this year. Customers on all other 4G LTE devices are unable to access the enhanced 4G LTE network, but they can still access 4G LTE speeds of up to 75 Mbps.

Current devices compatible with the enhanced 4G LTE network offer peak speeds of up to 100 Mbps (with expected average speeds of 18-40 Mbps) while in an enhanced coverage area. Outside the enhanced 4G LTE coverage area, devices will "fall back" to 4G LTE speeds of up to 75 Mbps. Where 4G LTE is unavailable, devices "fall back" to 4G HSPA+ speeds of up to 42 Mbps or 21 Mbps (depending on device specifications).

Future devices will allow for peak speeds of up to 150 Mbps on devices capable of reaching those speeds.

Fido LTE Network Coming Soon

Fido users will be happy, as today the company announced that LTE service will be available to customers this summer. The enhanced network will first be available in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and St Johns, with more cities to launch throughout the year.

The first LTE-enabled device to be released with be the Fido Mobile Hotspot, which will wirelessly connect up to 10 Wi-Fi capable devices. LTE-enabled smartphones will be available later in the year, and all new phones will be capable of running on the Fido 4G HSPA+ network.

Fido plans to have LTE available across the country by the end of the year. Over the coming months, Fido plans to launch LTE in Moncton, Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Québec City, Kingston, Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara, Windsor, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, London, Barrie, Sudbury, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Victoria.

As we're already nearing the end of July, we expect to see the LTE network available sometime next month. Stay tuned!

Apparently there have been more than 9 million carrier pre-orders to date, but Samsung expects shortages to be short lived as they ramp up production to meet this unprecedented global demand. Those of you who have pre-ordered your device will still be receiving them - you'll just have to wait one more week.

Samsung Galaxy S III Available June 20th

Samsung Canada has just officially announced that the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III will launch in Canada on June 20th. They have also released the official specs - the North American version will only have a dual-core processor, not the expected quad-core processor (which will only be available on the international version), and there is no word on a 64GB version being available, but everything else we originally reported seems to be accurate. There will be two models available, the SGH-i747 (Bell, Virgin, SaskTel, TELUS & Rogers) and the SGH-iT999 (Videotron, Wind & Mobilicity). Pricing will vary and has not been officially announced, but rumours have 3-year term pricing ranging from $149.99 to $169.99.

The Galaxy S III will be capable of detecting face, voice and motions with the following features:

Smart say - lets the phone recognize how the user is using their device such as, reading an e-book or browsing the web. By having the front camera identify eye motion the phone maintains a bright display for continued viewing pleasure.
S Voice - an advanced natural language user interface, to listen and respond to user commands (play a song, adjust the volume, send messages, organize schedules, and more).
Smart alert - alerts the user by catching any missed messages or calls with a vibration to notify missed statuses when picked up after being idle.

The S III will also features easy and instant sharing with:

S Beam - a 1GB movie file can be shared within three minutes and a 10MB music file within two seconds by simply touching another GALAXY S III phone.

Samsung Galaxy S III Coming Soon

Just a few days ago Samsung announced the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III, and now Canadian carriers that have committed to carrying the device include - Bell, TELUS, Rogers, SaskTel, Videotron, WIND Mobile and Mobilicity. The smartphone that was "designed for humans and inspired by nature" boasts many updated features from the Galaxy S II, including voice recognition software, a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, more memory (the S III will also be available in a 64GB model, as well as having the ability to support 64GB microSDHC cards), a more powerful battery (2100 mAh over the S II's 1650 mAh) and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. The camera on the device remains the same as it's predecessor at 8.0 MP, but improvements have been made to the camera app. Carrier model specifications, pricing and availability should be announced in the coming weeks, but we expect a launch date sometime in June.

Nova Scotia Aims to Regulate Cellphone Fees

Following in the footsteps of Ontario, who earlier this month announced a proposed legislation, Nova Scotia has also announced its plans to regulate the mobile phone industry.

If the legislation is put into place, the people of Nova Scotia will clearly know what their contract entails, and will no longer have to fear excessive or hidden overage fees. The amendments to the province's Consumer Protection Act would cap cancellation fees to $50 and require carriers to provide minimum monthly costs of service in contracts and advertising. Companies would also have to inform customers of contract changes that would increase their bills and would be restricted from automatically renewing or extending contracts.

Industry regulation would see:

Cancellation fees capped at $50;
All-inclusive minimum monthly costs stated in advertising and contracts;
Carriers required to inform customers of contract changes and/or rate increases;
Restriction from automatically renewing or extending contracts;
Carriers required to work with the government as it implements measures to combat cyberbullying.

The amendment would see Nova Scotia joining Quebec (Quebec's Bill 60 took effect in 2010) and Manitoba (who recently announced legislation will come into effect September 15, 2012).

Manitoba Announces New Cellphone Legislation

Good news for Manitobans! Similar to Quebec's Bill 60, Manitoba's upcoming new cellphone contract legislation, The Consumer Protection Amendment Act (Cell Phone Contracts), will create greater transparency in cellphone contracts and create fair practices for cellphone services.

Healthy Living, Seniors and Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Rondeau says "These new rules will ensure Manitobans will have clearer cellphone contracts, fair cancellation fees and reasonable rules for unilateral changes to contracts."

As of September 15, 2012, the new legislation will require carriers to:

Provide a copy of the contract to consumers before the contract begins;
Fully disclose and explain all charges, fees and terms;
Be restricted from making unilateral changes to contract terms;
Allow consumers to cancel contracts at any time for a reasonable cancellation fee;
Include the minimum monthly cost in cellphone advertisements;
Be restricted from making automatic cellphone contract renewals; and
Increase consumer protection for cellphone contracts not made in person (including contracts made over the Internet).

The legislation will still allow companies to charge reasonable fees when consumers end contracts early in order to recover costs for equipment provided or subsidized as a selling incentive.

Under the new legislation, the Consumer Protection Office can issue administrative penalties to carriers for non-compliance of up to $1,000 for the first offence, $3,000 for the second offence and $5,000 for all subsequent offences.

Ontario Proposes Cellphone Legislation

The Canadian Press - Too many Ontarians are being hit with unexpected charges on their cellphone and smart phone bills, Consumer Services Minister Margarett Best said Thursday as she promised new legislation to govern wireless service contracts.

The issue is consistently among the top 10 consumer complaints to her ministry, Best told reporters.

"One common problem we are responding to is the cell shock that many consumers experience upon opening their monthly bill," she said.

"The cell shock results from consumers being surprised for charges on services they were not aware they would be charged for or services they did not know would cost extra."

The proposed legislation will require:

Cap the cost of cancelling a contract and charge only a "modest fee" for leaving fixed-term contracts.
Notify consumers of any changes to their contract.
Get consumers' consent to renew, extend or amend a contract.
Use plain language in contracts.
Include all-inclusive price advertising for cellphone plans.
Not charge consumers for services while devices under warranty are being repaired.
Give notice to consumers who are about to incur additional charges for exceeding service limits.

"There is a need to provide additional protection for consumers in their agreements with (wireless) service providers," she said.

"Our government's goal is to provide greater clarity and fairness for Ontario's consumers with respect to cellphone agreements," Best said.

"The cancellation fees are grossly excessive, the automatic renewal features that are imposed on consumers are unfair and biased," said Liberal backbencher David Orazietti, who sponsored previous bills trying to rein in cellphone charges.

"It's important to ensure that consumers know what the full price of getting into a contract will mean," he said.

"The advertising aspect needs to include the highest, most prominent price, that's got to be the most visible for consumers to understand the true cost of entering into these contracts."

The bill would also require service providers to notify consumers when they are about to exceed the minutes in their contract before they rack up extra charges.

Orazietti said the federal government isn't taking steps to ensure there's real competition among wireless providers in Canada, so provinces like Ontario and Quebec are trying to do what they can to protect consumers.

"I say to the federal government the voluntary code of conduct is a farce, it's insulting to consumers and it does not address the competition issue and the costs that consumers need to bear," he said.

"It gets back to a belief federally that there's adequate competition. Clearly there's not."

Ontario and Quebec are introducing legislation "where they have the Constitutional and legal authority to do so, which is around the (wireless) contracts," said Orazietti.

"I would suspect other provinces will follow suit and there will be an appetite in other provinces to take similar measures given the steps that Quebec has taken and that we're taking."

There is no word when the Ontario Liberal government plans to introduce the bill in the legislature.

HD Voice Now Available at Bell & Virgin Mobile

Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile have joined WIND Mobile with the roll-out of HD Voice. Available on the Bell mobility 4G HSPA+ network, the enhancement is designed to give you the clearest call quality available - richer sound quality, significant reduction in background noise and an ease of voice recognition (when there is more than one person speaking).

There are a few conditions - both callers must be using a Bell Mobility or Virgin Mobile SIM card, both callers must be within the Bell 4G HSPA+ network, and both callers must have a HD Voice compatible phone.

Currently, the following phones are compatible with HD Voice (expect to see more in 2012):

TELUS Samsung Galaxy Note Coming Soon

The LTE-capable Samsung Galaxy Note will soon be heading to TELUS. Featuring a huge 5.3" Super AMOLED display, 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 8.0 MP camera with full HD video, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and up to 48 GB of memory (16 GB internal + up to 32 GB microSD), the Galaxy Note packs a punch. This smartphone also comes with a stylus ("S pen - advanced smart pen"), which neatly stores in the back of the device, comes pre-loaded with Google Maps turn-by-turn voice guidance navigation and Google Maps in 3D, and is Skype capable. No word yet on pricing or a release date, but we expect to see the Galaxy Note in stores sometime in February.

Rogers to Update Early Cancellation Policy in January 2012

In light of regulation updates in Quebec and Manitoba regarding consumer protection (known as "Bill 60" and "Bill 35"), Rogers will apparently be updating their Cancellation Policy nationwide. This means if a customer decides to cancel their service with Rogers or Fido, the customer will pay the remaining subsidized amount of their handset plus a $12.50 "Economic Inducement" fee.

For example, if you get the Apple iPhone 4S 16GB for $159 ($649 no contract) on a 3-year agreement (36-months) and decided in the first year to cancel, the new cancellation fee would be calculated by taking the Hardware Subsidiary x ( Remaining Months Left On Term / Total Term Months ) + the Economic Inducement Fee. In other words, the new cancellation fee would be ($649 - $159) x ( 24 / 36 ) + $12.50 = $339.17.

The new policy will apply to new activations or renewals on January 22 or later.

Facebook iPhone App Updated to Support Timeline

With the release of Timeline last week Facebook has updated their iOS app to support it. The Facebook also appears to run a little zippier with faster photo uploads as well.

You can download the latest version (4.1) through the Apple App Store. If you don't have timeline on your profile you can switch your profile over at fb.me/tml (bottom of the page).

Version 4.1 of the iOS Facebook app includes:

Access to Mobile Timeline on iPhone (if you already have a timeline). iPad support coming soon.
Access to friend lists, subscribers and subscriptions
