TELUS Samsung Galaxy Apollo Android Smartphone Coming Soon

According to Best Buy Mobile, the Samsung Galaxy Apollo Android smartphone is to be released by TELUS (screenshot below). Pricing is apparently to be determined, as the cheapest version of the phone is listed as $299.99 - though we expect a 3-year contract price to be lower than $300 judging by past Samsung Galaxy phones.

The Galaxy Apollo features a large, 3.2" touchscreen, built-in Wi-Fi and A-GPS, a 3.0 MP camera, media player, FM radio and virtual QWERTY keypad. The external memory is expandable up to 32 GB via microSD, and the talk and standby time are exceptional by cell standards, providing up to 9 hours of talk time and up to 24 days of standby. The phone will operate on TELUS' 3G+ network, and will run on the Android 2.1 Éclair OS.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Available September 24th

Over the last 2 days, 4 carriers have announced they will be releasing the BlackBerry Torch 9800 on September 24th. Bell (via Twitter), Rogers (via their website), Telus (via press release) and Virgin Mobile (via Facebook/Twitter). If you're looking to get your hands on the first smartphone running on the new BlackBerry OS 6.0, the choice is yours.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 features a redesigned interface, and new browser that will allow you to view HTML web pages quickly and clearly. It will also offer better messaging capabilities and RSS feeds, offering integrated access to your instant messaging applications and social networking sites. Plus, there's the enhanced multimedia functions and universal search feature. Fido to Expand HSPA+ Network Coverage in Manitoba

According to the Fido website, Fido is planning on expanding their current 3G network in the province of Manitoba. Currently the network only goes as far north as the area around Swan River, Eriksdale and Lac du Bonnet, with 3G high-speed only available in Winnipeg. The network expansion will bring the current GSM/GPRS/EDGE coverage area HSPA+ high-speed voice and data access. They will also be building out the HSPA+ network further north (note: this will require an HSPA+ compatible device, as there are no plans to build out the GSM/GPRS/EDGE network up there). The Fido website states, "Tentative projected in-service dates are for late 2010." If all goes well, Fido Manitobans outside of Winnipeg will finally be able to upgrade their phones and access the high-speed network much of the country already enjoys.

Current customers from Swan River to Melita to Falcon Lake will enjoy the upgraded HSPA+ network.

Bell expands HSPA+ network in Saskatchewan, Quebec

Bell customers in Northern Quebec and Saskatchewan - or customers passing through - will be happy to know Bell has expanded its HSPA+ network into these areas. Users will now be able to experience download speeds much of the country already enjoys - up to 21 Mbps - and also upgrade their devices to the latest HSPA+ compatible phones, smartphones and mobile internet sticks. The Bell network has been expanded across the Telebec territory in Northern Quebec, and in partnership with SaskTel, service is also available now across Saskatchewan. As with TELUS, who announced their new 3G+ coverage in Saskatchewan yesterday, and SaskTel, who announced their 3G+ coverage last week, Bell expects to have full HSPA+ coverage across the prairie province by the winter of 2011.

In addition to the network enhancements in Northern Quebec and Saskatchewan, Bell Mobility also launched more than 60 new cell sites across the country.

TELUS 3G+ Coverage in Saskatchewan Now Available

TELUS customers in Saskatchewan will be pleased to know the 3G+ network has finally arrived. Customers in 3G+ coverage areas will now be able to upgrade their phones (no word yet on which 3G+ devices will be released) and experience download speeds of up to 21 Mbps. This news comes exactly one week after SaskTel announced their new 3G+ network. Coverage is not complete, but TELUS plans to provide full coverage to be available to the Southern half of Saskatchewan by the winter of 2011. Note, at this time, prepaid activations are still not available in Saskatchewan, and TELUS customers from other provinces with a prepaid 3G+ device will only be able to access voice and text services.

This is good news for light internet users - no long-term contracts, no overage rates - just a little internet access when you need it. Bell's HTC Legend Discontinued Early

Effective yesterday, Bell has discontinued the HTC Legend 'due to ongoing supply constraints from the manufacturer'. This comes just 2 months and 2 days after the June 16th launch date. If you had your heart set on the Legend, you better start calling around - remaining units in store will continue to be sold until the inventory is out. Bell has stated anyone who is interested in the HTC Legend should be 're-directed to Bell's terrific line-up of Android smartphones'. The Android smartphones currently available at Bell include the Motorola Dext with MOTOBLUR, the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, and it's predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy.

No word yet on whether the Virgin Mobile HTC Legend will be discontinued. The Android smartphone is still available for sale on their website.

Bell today launched the Huawei E182E Turbo Stick. It's capable of downloads speeds up to 21.6 Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps. It comes preloaded with Mobile Connect software for Windows operating systems (sorry Apple users, this one doesn't support Mac OS). The Huawei E182E is compatible with the HSPA network, and has an expandable memory of up to 32 GB. You can also use this stick when you travel as it has global access. If you sign up for a 2- or 3- year term, you can get the Huawei E182E for free.

The phone looks sleeker than its predecessor, offering a larger 3" touchscreen, a 4-row slide-out QWERTY keyboard and double capacity for external memory at 8GB. The Apple iPhone 4 is now available in Canada from Apple Stores, Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Fido & Virgin Mobile. Apple Store are selling the smartphone unlocked at full retail price of $659 for the 16 GB and $779 for the 32 GB.

Rogers reveals iPhone 4 Pricing and brings back the $30 6 GB Data Plan

Rogers became the first of the big three to officially reveal their Apple iPhone 4 pricing. They will be offering the iPhone 4 to new customers for $159 (16 GB) and $269 (32 GB) on 3 year voice & data contracts. They also have brought back their $30 per month 6 GB data plan that you can pair with the iPhone 4. We've got full details on what discounts apply to each type of Rogers customer below.

Are you a new iPhone customer?

New customers can purchase a 16GB iPhone 4 for $159 or a 32GB iPhone 4 for $269, each with a new three-year voice and data plan on Canada’s proven and reliable network.

Did you activate or upgrade your Rogers iPhone on a term contract between June 7, 2010 and July 29, 2010?

You are eligible to purchase the 16GB iPhone 4 at $649 or the 32GB iPhone 4 at $749.

Did you activate or upgrade your Rogers iPhone on a term contract between January 1, 2009 and June 7, 2010?

Then you’re eligible for at least $250 off the no-term device price. That’s an iPhone 4 16GB/32GB for $399/$499 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.

WIND Mobile counters Chatr with new Advertising

WIND Mobile has launched some new advertising meant to counter the new Chatr brand. They've put an emphasis on the fact that they're network does more than just "Chatter" and features the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Chatr will not be selling any Smartphones which we assume WIND Mobile hopes to capitalize on.

Google no longer selling the Nexus One

Google has sold out of it's last shipment of Nexus One's and will no longer be selling the phone through their web site. This marks the end of Google's experiment to sell the Android Powered Smartphone directly to consumers through their web site.

Google.com/phone now shows the following message:

Other providers throughout Europe will continue to sell the Nexus One for Google through their stores. Google isn't expected to announce plans for a follow-up smartphone and will instead focus on improving their Android OS.

HTC Wildfire Android Smartphone Coming Soon to Bell

Bell will be adding another Android Smartphone in coming months with the HTC Wildfire. The HTC Wildfire is an entry level Android Smartphone that isn't quite as powerful as the other Android Smartphones in Bell's line-up. Bell currently offers three Android Smartphones with the HTC Legend, Motorola DEXT and Samsung Galaxy. Bell also plans on releasing the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant later this summer. No word on an HTC Wildfire release date but we'd expect a fall 2010 release date.

BlackBerry Curve 9300 3G Coming Soon to Bell & Rogers

It sounds like the new 3G version of the BlackBerry Curve will be coming to Bell & Rogers later this year. The BlackBerry Curve 9300/3G will most likely ship in the fall of 2010 and come pre-loaded with the new BlackBerry OS6 that everyone is looking forward to. The new Curve 3G is a similar upgrade to the Pearl 3G in that it has the new optical trackpad, wi-fi, hspa and GPS all built in.

No BlackBerry Curve 3G pricing has been announced but expect it to fall somewhere between the existing Curve and BlackBerry Bold 9700.

Bell Pushes the Palm Pre in new Advertising

At today's Apple press conference they also finally provided a Canadian launch date for the iPhone 4 of July 30th. We're expecting that Bell, Fido, Rogers, TELUS & Virgin Mobile will all be carrying the Apple iPhone 4 on launch day.

We don't have pricing yet but we expect the iPhone 4 will match AT&T pricing.

Apple Press Conference: Free Bumpers for iPhone 4 Customers

Apple held their press conference today to address iPhone 4 antenna problems. Steve Jobs addressed the issue insisting it really isn't a problem but they will be giving away free Bumper Cases to all Apple iPhone 4 customers.

Apple has sold over 3 million iPhone 4's and has only received antenna complaints from 0.55% of those customers (16,500). AT&T and Apple will also be offering a 30 day return on the iPhone 4 if customers aren't happy.

Apple holding iPhone Press Conference Tomorrow

Apple has announced that they will be holding a press conference tomorrow, Friday July 16, where it's expected they will address iPhone 4 antenna problems. Antenna problems have so far plagued the otherwise successful iPhone 4 launch.

Earlier this week Consumer Reports released their review of the Apple iPhone 4 where they did not recommend the new smartphone due to the antenna problems. They have since reported that the $30 iPhone 4 bumper sold by Apple does solve the antenna problems.

It's expected that Apple will announce some sort of a fix that may involve a recall or free bumpers for all iPhone 4 owners.

We also hope that a release date for Canada might be announced. Bell, Fido, Rogers, TELUS & Virgin Mobile will all be carrying the Apple iPhone 4 it's just a matter of when.

We'll have more information after the 10 am Pacific Time press conference tomorrow.

Consumer Reports doesn't recommend the iPhone 4, Apple Stock takes a Dip

Yesterday Consumer Reports released their review of the iPhone 4 where they could not recommend the Apple iPhone 4 to consumers. Consumer Reports confirmed antenna problems that have plagued the iPhone 4 since it's release last month and recommended the Apple iPhone 3GS instead. Surprisingly Consumer Reports still rates the Apple iPhone 4 as one of the best smartphones on the market. You can find the full video review and web site review below.

Apple stock is down $5.50 (2.1%) today based on "antennagate" fears that might see Apple step in to do something about the antenna problems.

RIM reveals more BlackBerry 6 Features

Samsung Gravity Touch coming to Bell on July 21st

Bell will be bringing yet another Samsung phone to their network later this month with the Samsung Gravity Touch. The Samsung Gravity Touch, set to launch on July 21st, will be exclusive to Bell and will be compatible with their HSPA network.

Bell has already added the Samsung Entro cell phone and Samsung Wave smartphone just yesterday and plan on adding the Samsung Galaxy S later this summer.

The Samsung Gravity Touch is a premium messaging HSPA device that features a 2.8” full touch-screen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Videotron Launching new 3G+ Network Very Soon

Videotron has made some changes to their web site to reveal that their new 3G+ network will be launching very soon. Videotron is expected to launch 17 new phones & smartphones that will replace all of their existing Rogers phones. They have currently suspended the sale of phones through their web site while they prepare for the launch.

Rogers nabs naming rights for home of Vancouver Canucks

Yesterday Rogers announced that they had reached a 10 year agreement with Canucks Sports & Entertainment to become their telecommunications sponsor and take over the naming rights of their building. GM Place will become Rogers Arena over the next few months and TELUS will no longer be the arena's telecommunications sponsor.

Exert from the announcement:

The telecommunications sponsorship includes extensive branding and advertising placements, including in-ice, in-building and rink board signage, Canucks.com, 300-level concourse branding, in-game features, interactive hockey themed concourse displays and mobile applications. As Canada's largest provider of wireless voice and data communications services, Rogers will work with the Canucks to explore new and innovative ways to use wireless technology to engage fans anytime, anyplace. They will also join forces on local charitable initiatives.

As of today the GM Place logo had already been removed from the building and GeneralMotorsPlace.com now redirects to RogersArena.com.

Rogers launching Chatr, new unlimited talk and text brand

Today Rogers announced that they will be launching a new unlimited talk & text brand called "Chatr" later this summer. Chatr is expected to launch in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver to compete with the wireless entrants WIND Mobile, Mobilicity and Public Mobile.

Chatr will most likely launch with the Nokia 2680 Slide, LG Sapphire and Samsung Gravity.

Public Mobile goes live in Montreal

Today Public Mobile officially went live with their new Montreal network. Previously Public Mobile only had coverage in the Toronto area. The launch of their Montreal network puts Public Mobile behind WIND Mobile but ahead of newly launched Mobilicity in terms of network coverage.

Public Mobile previously went live with their Toronto network on May 26th of 2010. They currenlty have big plans for our network that will run from Windsor all the way to Quebec City.

Apple iPhone 4 Launch features Long Lines and Antenna Problems

The Apple iPhone 4 became officially available in the US yesterday where long lines and reported antenna problems made headlines.

Antenna Problems

Many users are reporting Antenna problems with the new iPhone 4 when they hold it firmly around the outside where the new antenna resides. Macrumours has a great video showing how holding the left hand corner of the iPhone 4 will slowly drop the signal that can be seen below.

Steve Jobs has actually emailed Engadget regarding the problem stating:

Just avoid holding it that way.

Doesn't seem like it'll be a big issue but certainly something to keep our eye on.

Long Lines

Twitter was abuzz yesterday with reports of people waiting 4 - 7 hours in line to get their hands on their pre-ordered Apple iPhone 4. Cnet has posted a great video showing the line-up outside the Apple Store in Palo Alto California that we've embedded below.

Apple iPhone 4 US Pre-Orders Surpass 600,000

Yesterday both Apple & AT&T suspended pre-orders for the iPhone 4 due to overwhelming demand. It was announced that over 600,000 iPhone 4s have already been pre-ordered. As of today Apple has once again begun accepting pre-orders but it comes attached with a July 14th shipping date.

Apple stock has hit a new all-time high of just over $272 a share with some analysts predicting $340.

Apple has yet to announce a Canadian release date for the iPhone 4 but the new July 14th second round of pre-orders date may be similar to what we'll see in Canada.

Apple will be selling the iPhone 4 unlocked through its web site. They will also make the 8 GB iPhone 3GS available unlocked. The move will allow Canadians to choose between Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Fido & Virgin Mobile for their iPhone service.

You will also be able to purchase the iPhone 4 locked at any Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Fido or Virgin Mobile point of sale location.

Google is currently selling their Nexus One unlocked via their web site and recently announced that they will be ceasing this practive and moving to selling their phone in stores only.

Cellular expert Al Kilburn says Wind is just too small to effect that kind of change.

Mobilicity given go ahead to launch by the CRTC

Today Mobilicity was granted the go ahead to officially launch by the CRTC. Dave Wireless, now doing business as Mobilicity, invested $243.1-million in 10 Canadian Wireless Spectrum licenses in July of 2008. At the time the CRTC had foreign ownership concerns which they have investigated, made modifications requirements and finally given them the go ahead to launch.

The CRTC's decision stated:

In this decision, the Commission sets out its determination in the ownership and control review of Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless Inc. (DAVE Wireless). In its review, the Commission considered whether non-Canadians own or control DAVE Wireless. The Commission determines that, subject to certain modifications to the Amended and Restated Shareholders Agreement, as set out in the Appendix to this decision, DAVE Wireless will meet the requirements of the ownership and control regime and will therefore be eligible to operate as a Canadian telecommunications common carrier.

HP Acquires Palm for $1.2 Billion

HP announced today that they have acquired Palm for $1.2 Billion. The sale of Palm comes as no surprise as they have been actively seeking a buyer for the past few months. HP will be buying Palm at $5.70, a 23% premium over today's closing price of $4.63. The sale is expected to close by the end of July.

Analyst believe the key to today's deal was Palm's webOS mobile platform. HP has dabbled with Windows Mobile phones in the past and is currently working on Android based Smartphones. The move shows that HP is looking to put more emphasis in today's growing wireless market. HP is also getting over 1,500 patents that Palm currently controls.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G Coming Soon to Bell, Rogers & TELUS

Today it was announced that the BlackBerry Pearl 3G (9100) would be coming to the big 3 Canadian carriers of Bell, Rogers & TELUS. The Pearl 3G is follow-up to BlackBerry's Pearl line and will be compatible with 3G+/HSPA networks.

It is expected that the BlackBerry Pearl 3G will be availalbe mid-May in Canada. Rogers will be offering it in a gradient red finish while TELUS will be offering it in Black & Pink. No word on what sort of colours Bell will be offering but we should expect it in Black.

Rogers extends HSPA+ coverage to 21 more cities

Rogers today announced it has expanded its HSPA+ network to an additional 21 Canadian markets. Now major cities in provinces that previously had no coverage will be able to enjoy the faster speeds that have up until now only been available in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.

Rogers states that these new markets will be able to experience download speeds of up to 21 Megabits per second (Mbps).

The 21 cities now covered include:

Saskatchewan: Regina & Saskatoon

Microsoft Reveals Social Networking Phones, Kin One and Kin Two

On Monday, Microsoft revealed its much anticipated smartphones, the Kin One and the Kin Two – devices which features are centered on social-networking.

Says Robert J. Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, “This is aimed at 15- to 30-year-olds who are social-networking enthusiasts.”

The Kin One and Kin Tow allow users to sync their favourite social networking site, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. They also sport a unique photo-montage style menu, and 5 (Kin One) and 8 (Kin Two) megapixels cameras.

Both phones feature a touch screen and slide-out keyboard. Kin One is smaller and more compact, while Kin Two is designed for two-handed texting. The Kin Two also features double the memory at 8 GB, as well as the ability to record high-definition video.

The phones' home screen, the KIN Loop, offers real-time feeds and status updates from social networking sites. To share an item with friends, users just drag it into a small circle called the Spot. Graphically, the item then disappears, and poof! - it's shared.

KIN will be the first Windows Phone to feature a built-in media player powered by Microsoft's Zune software. And those with a Zune Pass subscription using Zune software on their PC can listen to millions of songs from Zune Marketplace on their phone.

Kin phones, manufactured by Sharp, will debut in the U.S. in May on Verizon Wireless. Vodafone will be distributing the phone in Europe. No pricing has been disclosed at this time.

Apple Revealing iPhone OS 4 this Thursday

Apple has sent out media invites for a special envent this Thursday where they will be revealing iPhone OS 4. Earlier this weekend the iPad was released in the United States selling 300,000 on Sunday alone.

It's expected that the new iPhone OS 4 will have a multitasking feature based on Apple’s Exposé. We wouldn't expect the OS to be made available until the summer giving developers time to get build new apps.

The other big possibility will be the revealing of the iPhone 4. Alot of rumours have begun circulating that it will be coming this summer and may even be coming to Verizon in the fall.

We'll have more information as soon as the press event begins at 10am pacific on April 8th.

Virgin Mobile Creates Safe Text Zones in Vancouver & Toronto (April Fool's)

Virgin Mobile got in on the April Fool's fun with a video promoting their new "Safe Text Zones".

Each year, thousands of Canadians are injured by horrible cases of "textus interruptus" after walking into poles, mailboxes, bike stands and other dangerous obstacles that line our streets.

This spring, Virgin Mobile, working with the consumer advocacy group CRASH (Canadians Raising Awareness for Street-related Harm), began a pilot campaign of Safe Text Zones in Toronto and Vancouver. The goals is to raise public awareness and lobby the government to have similar safe zones installed in busy streets across the nation.

It seems as though BlackBerry has revealed that their devices will soon be coming to Koodo Mobile with the launch of koodomobile.blackberry.com. The addition of BlackBerry devices to Koodo Mobile seems like a logical next step for TELUS owned & operated cellular provider. We're hearing that Koodo Mobile will be launching with the following CDMA based BlackBerry's:

BlackBerry Curve 8530
BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230
BlackBerry Pearl 8130

WIND Mobile Launches in Ottawa

Today WIND Mobile officially launched their network in Ottawa. They have launched with two Blockbuster retail locations with more to follow. WIND Mobile recently added Edmonton in late February and is expected to be launching in Vancouver later this year.

Melissa from WIND Mobile stated:

Robot Touchscreen Analysis by MOTO Development Group

Earlier this year MOTO Development Group put the Touchscreen of a number of Smarpthones to the test. Since then users have asked them to test more devices and eliminate the possibility of human error. Responding to critics the MOTO Development Group has put the Touchscreen of 6 Smartphones to the test with the use of a robot. You'll find the video showing the results embedded below.

Rogers & Fido Extend Tethering Policy Indefinitely

Rogers & Fido customers received some good news this week when it was announced that their tethering policy, expected to be phased out on May 3rd, would be extended indefinitely. Customers with a data plan of 1GB or more will be able to share the internet connection on their smartphone with their laptop.

Samsung Announces the Samsung Galaxy S Android Smartphone

Today Samsung announced a new iteration of their Galaxy line with the Android powered Samsung Galaxy S. The Galaxy S features a number of improvements over previous iterations and will be available worldwide later this year. Samsung made the announcement at the annual CTIA show in Las Vegas.

The Samsung Galaxy S (Model: GT-I9000) will feature:

"Smart Life" Content Ecosystem integration

Native GPS with 3g maps

WIND Mobile now offers tethering for their BlackBerry Bold 9700

WIND Mobile now offers tethering for their BlackBerry Bold 9700 and any other future BlackBerry devices. Customers with the Infinite BlackBerry ($35/month) add-on can take advantage of this offer at no cost while others will be charged $0.1 per 25 KB.

What is Tethering?

Since then we've learned that Fido, TELUS, Bell, Virgin Mobile & WIND Mobile customers can also purchase it. Paid Apps Now Available on Android Market for Canadians

Paid Android Apps are now finally available to purchase for Canadians. Up until earlier this week Canadians only had access to free Android Apps.

Earlier today MobileCrunch reported that Google is now offering over 30,000 apps through their Android Market. Google grew from 16,000 apps in December to 30,000 apps in March, almost doubling their existing App Count in just 3 months.

Google Nexus One Now Available from Rogers

A Rogers Wireless & AT&T compatible Google Nexus One is now for available for purchase via Google.com. This is a huge surprise as the original Google Nexus One was only compatible with WIND Mobile.

Google posted a short announcement via their Nexus One blog that:

Starting today, an additional version of the Nexus One is available from the Google web store that is compatible with AT&T’s 3G network. This new model can be purchased as an unlocked device without a service plan. In addition to AT&T’s 3G network, this device will also run on Rogers Wireless in Canada. And like the first version of the Nexus One, it can be used with most GSM operators globally.

Additionally, Nexus One devices can now be shipped to Canada from Google’s web store, and will work with a SIM from Rogers Wireless. To find out which version you should purchase, based on your mobile service provider, please visit our Help Center.

Making of Virgin Mobile Random Acts of Love Flashmob

Virgin Mobile organized a number of contests & promotions centered around Valentine's Day earlier this year. They also put together an impromptu flashmob dance at Yonge & Dundas Square in Downtown Toronto that they have just revealed the making of through their Youtube channel.

Will WIND Mobile Succeed?

Last week WIND Mobile announced that two senior executives, chief information officer Scott Waller and head of customer service Chris Robbins had left the company. The move comes just 3 1/2 months after their launch in mid-December. Many in the industry feel WIND Mobile launched too early, without enough network coverage and insufficient marketing.

1.5 Million Subscribers

SeaBoard Group, an industry research firm, estimates that has added about 30,000 wireless subscribers in Toronto, Calgary & Edmonton. WIND Mobile has stated they have plans to hit 1.5 million subcribers in the next 3 years. This would mean adding about 41,500 subscribers per month which not even Bell, Rogers or TELUS have managed as of late.

To put things in perspective Q4 2009 Net Activations for the big three were:

Bell - 163,000 (40,750 per month)
Rogers - 109,000 (27,250 per month)
TELUS - 122,000 (30,500 per month)

Retail Distribution

WIND Mobile is currently only available in a few retail mall stores and select Blockbuster locations. They are rumoured to be in negotiations with Best Buy Canada to add their devices to all Future Shop, Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile store locations. This would definitely benefit WIND immenesely as Best Buy has pratically re-organized their shopping experience to focus on wireless.

Looking Forward

WIND Mobile has plans to launch their Ottawa & Vancouver networks very soon which will should boost sales but without better retail distribution and marketing it will be very hard for them to reach their subscriber goal. Will this stop WIND from trying? We doubt it.

Motorola Backflip, Dext & Quench Coming Soon to Canada

Rogers Launches RedBoard Web Site to Connect with Customers

Today Rogers launched their official blog where they plan on discussing news and ideas as well as industry issues and trends. The RedBoard web site is seen as a new way for Rogers to communicate with their customers along with their twitter accounts.

Keith McArthur, Senior Director of Social Media at Rogers, stated in their first post:

We’ve been finding our voice in these online conversations – joining in on discussion forums, leaving comments on blogs, answering your questions through the @RogersHelps Twitter account and telling you about the latest Rogers news through the @RogersBuzz account.

Today we’re excited to launch a new forum for these conversations. RedBoard will be a place where we can talk about our vision, explain our services and policies and geek out about the latest new technology. Our goal is to keep jargon to a minimum and to focus on providing useful information, interviews with decision makers and answers to your questions.

Only time will tell as to whether this new RedBoard web site will be a success. The first comments from Canadians have been a mixed bag. Gary from Toronto stated:

Is this new venue going to ignore me like the @RogersHelps does when I have a problem? You can set up all the social media channels you want but it doesn’t change the fact that the people on the phone can’t fix my problems with my service.

Apple Sues HTC over Patent Infringement

Apple announced today that it is suing HTC for "for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware". We've got a full copy of Apple's press release below.

Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement

CUPERTINO, Calif. March 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

Apple reinvented the mobile phone in 2007 with its revolutionary iPhone®, and did it again in 2008 with its pioneering App Store, which now offers more than 150,000 mobile applications in over 90 countries. Over 40 million iPhones have been sold worldwide.

HTC has commented on the story stating:

We only learned of Apple's actions based on your stories and Apple's press release. We have not been served any papers yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.

Apple is asking for a permanent injunction, which would bar HTC from importing or selling phones in the US that use these patents, along with triple damages with maximum interest.

WIND Mobile Launches in Edmonton

Yesterday WIND Mobile launched their Edmonton network joining Calgary & Toronto. They plan on launching in Ottawa very soon with Vancouver to follow. WIND Mobile has setup 2 retail locations and 4 blockbuster locations for you to switch to their network.

Ken from WIND Mobile stated:

Highlight of the week was Edmonton! Yes, we launched in the City of Champions. The home town boy (Chris) should be proud. We launched with 5 stores and a strong network that will get stronger over the coming weeks. Thanks to all of our technical and retail team in Alberta for an exceptional job. Rogers Now Offers DRM-Free OTA Music Downloads

Today Rogers announced that they too are now offering DRM-free over the air downloads through their urMusic.ca music service. The move follows TELUS's recent annoucement of the same ability that enables customers to download, listen and enjoy their music across different devices.

Customers visiting www.urmusic.ca online or via the mobile web portal on their wireless device will now have the ability to purchase DRM-free (also known as MP3) music tracks to their device or computer and transfer them to their other digital music-capable electronic devices, free of charge.

Rogers also announced new track & album pricing of:

New tiered pricing is also available for DRM-free music tracks ranging from $0.69, $0.99 and up to $1.29* per track. Full album purchases generally cost less than $10* for Rogers customers. (*plus applicable download fees)

The main catch in this annoucement is that all music must be downloaded via your Cell Phone or Smartphone in order to take advantage of the DRM-free offer.
