OIly Jeffries Wins BRCA 1/12 Modified Title

There are very rare occasions in RC racing when a car and driver are in perfect harmony, but it would seem that Olly Jefferies and his Reedy-powered 12R5.1 found that sweet spot last weekend as the combination dominated both the 10.5 Stock and Modified classes at the weekend’s BRCA 1:12 national.

The Teesside venue is slightly different than the majority of 1:12 tracks with its unusual L-shaped layout. However, this technical track seemed to play to the strengths of Olly, as on Saturday he set the fastest time in every round of qualifying to sit on pole for the Stock A-final ahead of multiple World Champion David Spashett. If anyone looked capable of taking the fight to Olly, it was David.

In the Stock A-final Olly eased a comfortable lead, which he maintained to the end and took the win ahead of David Spashett and Mark Stiles. The result means that Olly only needs a top six finish in the final round at Chesterfield to secure the national Stock title.

Olly dominated once again during Sunday’s Modified class action. For this report it could have been “copy and paste” as once again Olly took every round of qualifying and sat on pole for the A-final ahead of Andy Griffiths and Mark Stiles.

Once Olly got into his stride he cruised to what looked like an easy victory over Andy Griffiths and Mick Farrell. By winning this round, Olly secured this season’s BRCA Modified title with one round still remaining.

Avid RC Buggy and SC Wheels

From time to time I stop by my local tracks to see if I can spot anything the manufacturers might be ‘testing out’. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t. Last night I rolled up into West Coast RC Raceway, one of the premier indoor off-road facilities in SoCal. Sitting at the back of the room was a good friend of mine, Kurt “Coach” Wenger. Recently Coach left a cushy position at Team Associated to work with an up-and-coming parts designer, Avid RC.

As I strolled back there to talk to him and see how his new job was working out, he saw me coming and quickly closed his computer lid. Flag #1. And because he was sitting way in the back of the building with his back to the wall, that threw up Flag #2. Flag #3 was the easy one…I could see new wheels on his B4.1WC that I haven’t seen before.

We talked for a bit and I was able to get the scoop on a few new products Avid RC is coming out with. First up was a brand new set of 1/10 buggy wheels. These wheels have a few trick features not yet seen by other wheel manufacturers. For one, if you look closely at the lip of the wheel, it’s beveled abit away from the wheel’s face. If you use thin glue, this bevel helps prevent the glue from running down the face of the wheel. The second trick feature is the area the locknut goes. Check out the swirl design. These wheels are designed to work with non-locknut wheel nuts, and that swirl design helps grip the wheel nut and prevent it from loosening up.

Coach also showed me their new Short Course wheel. This wheel also features the knurled locknut area as well as the glue lip. The lip is a little different, but the idea is the same.

Next up was the clamping wheel hexes for the B4.1. I was able to sneak a pic of the silvery prototypes but was told that the production units would be anodized black and include a stainless screw. THese wheel hexes fit the Avid buggy wheels perfectly…of course.

The final product was a new set of front and rear buggy springs. These springs are hand-tested and labeled prior to shipping. A label is printed and pasted on the spring container (wait until you see this container) to show you how close they are that they are a matched set. This extra step ensures that you are getting a matched set of springs instead of a pair of springs that ‘might be the same’.

I got the 411 on a few other products but can’t release that info yet. Keep an eye out for these guys…they’re the new kids on the block that now do more than just bad-ass bearings!

Four Victories at Motorama for Team Associated/Reedy/LRP

Thousands of spectators flocked to the 2012 Motorama event watching and participating in everything from motocross to karting to sprints and RC. Team Associated was there supporting our customers, promoting remote-control car racing, and competing in each class offered.

The event featured two different racing tracks. One was designed for competition among traditional 1:10 offroad vehicles including 2WD buggies, 4WD buggies, and stadium trucks on a clay surface. The other, larger track featured racing for 1:8 electric buggies and truggies along with 2WD and 4WD Short Course. With spectators filing through the event throughout the two-day period, many were witnessing competitive remote-control car racing for the first time.

On the 1:10 track, Chad Due was on fire with his Team Associated B4.1 WE and B44.1 buggies, taking the victory in the two premier classes on that track – 2WD and 4WD Modified. Chad used Reedy LiPo batteries and Reedy Sonic motors combined with LRP SXX V2 speed controls to bring home the double victory. Also taking a class victory in 17.5 Stadium Truck with his Reedy Sonic/LRP-powered Team Associated T4.1 was Dave Duncan from JConcepts.

Not to be left out of the winner’s circle was one of Team Associated’s latest signings, Max Flurer. Max took his FT SC10 truck to the top step of the podium and backed up his top-qualifying effort with a victory in the 2WD Modified Short Course class on the larger 1:8 track. Max also used a Reedy 5500 mAh 60C battery and a Reedy Sonic 7.5 motor with a LRP SXX V2 speed control to power him to victory.

Congratulations also goes out to podium finishers Steven Hartson (4WD Buggy), Chad Due (2WD Modified Short Course) and Brent Thielke (1:8 Expert eBuggy). With such a large opportunity to showcase RC cars to a massive group of potential customers, Motorama represents an event unlike any other. If you have the opportunity to attend, it’s a highly recommended experience to interact with people discovering the fun of remote-control cars for the first time.

Serpent 1/10 1/8 Centax True Motion Clutches

Serpent introduces new Centax clutches for 1/10 and 1/8 onroad.

The development of the Centax clutch continues. Serpent’s designer Ron Ton was the innovator of this revolutionary clutch system in the mid 90-ties. Soon it became the industry standard in onroad racing, as all other brands adopted similar systems. Many variations have been tried, but in the end it still comes close to the original idea.

In the latest development the tapered shape has been moved from the flywheel to the pressure plate instead, improving punch and reliability. Serpent continues the use of the hard Centax spring to set preload, as its less critical and fast to adjust.

The 1/10 scale Centax True motion clutch has the red shoe and steel clutch housing. Black and yellow shoes can be tried as well, as well as the alu or light steel clutch housing.

The 1/8 scale Centax True motion clutch, has the black shoe and aluminum cutch housing as standard. Yellow and red shoes can be tried as well, as well as the steel or light steel clutch housing.

The Team Takes Three at Rumble in the Rockies

This past weekend MHOR R/C Raceway in Denver, CO, hosted the Rumble in the Rockies. There were nearly 200 entries with drivers from many parts of the country, which made for some great racing. The layout for the event was very high speed, and combined with a small track size, the lap times dropped into the 11-12 second range.

Modified 2WD Buggy
Kody Numedahl and Michael Schoettler qualified second and third overall respectively. Kody took A-1 and Michael took A-2, which meant that A-3 would determine the winner. Kody bobbled on the first lap but made his way back up to second only 1.2 seconds behind the leader. A three-way tie went in Kody’s favor by .2 seconds, giving him the overall win.

Modified 4WD Buggy
Again, Kody took the TQ of this class, followed by some of Tacoma WA’s best in Michael Schoettler and Luke Smith. Kody saw some mechanical issues in A-1, which dropped him out of the race, leaving Michael to cruise on to an early win. In A-2, an early bobble from Michael let Kody return the favor and take the easy win. A-3 would decide the overall winner and proved to be a close race. Kody made a mistake early, letting Michael get around. He followed him closely but another mistake while pressuring for a pass let Michael take the overall win.

Modified 4WD SC
Adrian Redding took the TQ, followed by teammate Scott Brown. A-1 went just like qualifying — Adrian took the win followed very closely by Scott. In A-2 both drivers had small bobbles, causing them to finish second and third. A-3 was a battle from start to finish. They swapped positions many times but a last corner pass by Scott gave him the win in A-3 and the overall win by 1.2 seconds.

Overall it was a great weekend for Team Associated, taking home three out of the four modified classes.

JQProducts Introduces THE Oils

THEOils, JQProducts’ own line of Silicone Shock and Diff Oils have been out for a while already, but we haven’t actually officially released them. So here goes. The Shock Oils come in large 115ml bottles, and range from 250cps to 750cps. The Diff Oils come in 85ml bottles, and range from 1000cps to 12500cps.
