Is It Safe to Delete Windows.old Folders?

I have an ASUS CM5570 that is 4 years old as of Aug 9. It came with VISTA and a Win 7 Home Premium upgrade. I then purchased Win 7 Ultimate. Now I have all of them aboard under Windows, Windows old, Windows old.000 and windows old .oo1. Could I remove any of them because my HD is 3/4 full. I have removed everything else that I did not use, but it did not improve things very much. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Beverly, if you are certain that your laptop upgrade has gone the way you wanted it to, and you have all the files that you need or want onto the main part of your hard drive, it is safe to remove the Windows.old folders.

Before removing the folders, firstly check the following:

Are you missing any files that you want or need from your old installations of Windows?
Are all your preferences how you wanted them to be, following the upgrade? (Do you want anything back the way you had it prior to upgrading?)
Have you been using your installation long enough to know you’ve confidently tested all areas of your laptop that you use frequently?

If you’re certain about all of these, you can then go ahead and remove the Windows.old folders. Though a normal deleting of the files isn’t recommended, as there is a specific Windows function built-in to handle these folds. You can utilise this function by doing the following:

Be warned before starting, once this is done it cannot be undone.

Click the Start button, or the Windows logo on your keyboard.

Type in the following, “Disk Cleanup”

Click the resulting application, named “Disk Cleanup” Select the applicable hard drive. In most cases this will be C:

Disk Cleanup will begin to calculate all the space it can save for you.

Once it is done calculating, you will be presented with numerous options. One of these options will be “Previous Windows Installation(s)” This is the option you want to choose to get rid of Windows.old folders. (See image below.)

Check any other options that you may want to remove also, “Recycling Bin” and “Windows Update Cleanup” are good suggestions for clearing space.

Click “Ok,” and it’ll prompt asking you if you’re sure you want to permanently delete the files. Press “Delete files,” and let the Disk Cleanup application do its job.

Once it’s complete, these folders will be gone.

Enjoy all the space that you’ve freed up, with peace of mind that you’ve removed the folders correctly!

Does My Security Software Cover My Tablet?

My anti-virus software comes with three licenses. Can I use on of those for my Android tablet?

Jeri that will depend on your security provider. I know that some companies that offer an Android app will include that among the devices covered under you license. You simply need to download the app for your Android and register with the proper activation code.

Norton, for example, does this. My mother-in-law was pleasantly surprised when she called to order a separate subscription for her tablet to discover it was covered under the license for her laptop. You’ll need to check with your security provider to see if that option is available.

Help! My Recovery Drive Is Full

I keep getting a pop up warning that my recovery drive is full. I can’t perform backups. What can I do?

Hi Joy, thanks for the question. Some computer manufacturers provide a Recovery drive option built in to the computer, usually on a D: drive. This is not a separate, physical hard drive, but a partition of the main hard drive that is designed to be used only if you need to restore your computer back to its original, factory settings. (You know how when you bought a computer in the past, you used to get a disk with the operating system? This partition replaces that!) This would be done only in extreme cases or problems, as it wipes out all of the changes you’ve ever made to the computer.

That being said, nothing should be stored by the user on that partition. If you ever needed to perform a system recovery, those extra files that have been saved may cause that process to fail. The drive space on the recovery drive is fairly small, and typically is not much larger than would be needed to complete a system recovery.

In working through this problem with Joy, we found that she had somehow saved a backup to that recovery partition, which caused it to be full. Once she deleted or moved that backup to a different drive, her recovery drive was back to being only half full. Keep in mind, since the Recovery drive is designed to be a certain size, it may grow to be almost full. If you get a warning that the D: drive is almost full, that’s OK – as long as you have never added anything to the drive. It’s designed to be almost full.

Remember, a backup should never be set to save to your Recovery drive. One, this will fill up the drive very quickly and make a system recovery difficult if needed. And two, the Recovery drive isn’t a separate hard drive, but rather a partition of the original hard drive. So if something were to happen to the drive, you wouldn’t be able to access that backup anyway. You should set your backups to go to an external drive or flash drive.

Copy, cut, and paste. It’s an essential skill when using an electronic device. I’m sure many of you know how to do this on a computer, but what about on a tablet or smart phone? We’ll review them all.

First, lets review the difference -

Copy – making another copy of the words, paragraph or picture to be placed somewhere else, similar to a copy machine

Cut – removing the selection entirely to be pasted somewhere else, just like cutting with scissors

Paste – placing the selection that was cut or copied into a different location

Now, the steps. On a PC, first you would need to highlight. This can be accomplished by using the mouse and dragging over the words until they are highlighted. You can also accomplish this with the shift key. Move your mouse to where you’d like to start copying, click and then hold the Shift key on your keyboard. Then click where you’d like to end the highlighting.

Once your text is highlighted, you can either use your mouse or some keyboard shortcuts. If you want to use the mouse, point to the highlighted selection and RIGHT click. You’ll see a menu pop up and you can choose copy or cut. If you’d rather use a keyboard shortcut, when the text is highlighted, hit CTRL-C for copy, or CTRL-X for cut.

Then move wherever you’d like to paste, right click, and in that menu hit paste. Or move wherever you’d like to paste and hit CTRL-V.

For a Mac computer, the process is the same, except the keyboard shortcuts. There is no CTRL key on a Mac keyboard. Instead, use the CMD button, or you can use the right click option.

For any touch screen device, like a tablet or phone, all you need to do is press and hold on the text. On an Android device, you’ll see the highlighting start and you can drag the anchors to complete what you’d like to highlight. You’ll see a menu at the top that shows you options for copy If you long press on something already highlighted, such as a web address, you will see a menu pop up like the one below. Then you can copy or cut and then paste to wherever you’d like, it’ll save to your clip tray.

On an iOS device, when you press and hold you’ll see two anchors that you can drag to highlight a selection. You’ll also see the menu options to copy and paste.

You can also use the magnifier to assist with the selecting the word or words you’d like to highlight. When you first press and hold, this is what will come up to allow you to move to the exact word you want to start with.

Again, this will copy to a virtual clipboard and allow you to paste wherever you’d like.

Is It Safe To Delete My Bank Information?

I have windows XP on my desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop. I want to remove my bank information from the desktop but I am afraid I will also delete it from my laptop. What should I do?

if you have information saved as a document on a hard drive on your XP computer, deleting it there will not have any effect on your Windows 7 laptop. If you mean that you have banking information saved in a browser like Internet Explorer on your XP computer, you can still delete the history and turn off the ability for IE to remember passwords without it affecting your laptop.

The only changes made though your browser that would apply across multiple computers would be if you logged into your account with the bank and perhaps changed the password.

Most importantly, you need to stay offline with that XP computer, as there is no longer any security support.

Help! My Yahoo! Email Doesn’t Work On The iPad!

After upgrading my iPad, I can no longer receive my Yahoo e-mails.

Major software updates like iOS 7 can occasionally play havoc with some of your existing settings for email on the iPad. However, it is easy to remedy. Simply follow the instructions below:

1. Ensure you know the correct password for your Yahoo! email account. If you are not 100% sure what that is, it is always a good idea to test it to make sure that the password you are thinking of is indeed the one you use for your Yahoo! email account. So, open Safari and navigate to http://mail.yahoo.com and log in to your account. If you are already logged in, log out and try to log back in again to ensure that your password works.

2. Next, find the Settings app on your iPad and go to Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars to see your existing email accounts.

3. Tap on the Yahoo! account to access the mail settings, and then tap Delete Account. It sounds scary, but you are only removing the account from the iPad. None of your emails, contacts, or calendar events will be erased when you delete the account, they will just be temporarily removed from the iPad.

4. A warning will pop-up, informing you that deleting the account will remove all existing emails, contacts and calendars from the iPad. As stated above, your data is safe, so go ahead and tap Delete to confirm.

5. Next, tap Add Account, and then tap Yahoo!

6. In the pop-up box, enter your full name, email address (including the @yahoo.com ending), and your password. By default, the description will read Yahoo! so you can change that if you like, or just leave it as it is. The description only serves to better identify the email account if you happen to have several different email accounts on the device. Then tap Next in the top right-hand corner to confirm your settings.

7. On the next screen, choose which Yahoo! services you would like to sync to the iPad. If you only need email, feel free to slide the other switches to the left in order to deselect the other options. Click Save in the top right-hand corner to save your preferences.

8. Now you can navigate to the Mail app to find your latest emails. It may take a minute or two for them to sync, but they should appear almost right away.

Radio Station Running XP Hijacked By Hackers

As someone who spent many years working in Broadcasting, I can tell you this is every station’s worst nightmare. Hackers were able to take over the automation system of a three radio stations in Louisiana by getting into the automation system and demanding money to release it.

According to the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters, the stations were running automation programs on a Windows XP computer. The owner thought the stations would be safe, despite the end of security support for Windows XP, because he had a firewall. (Clearly, he’s not been reading the Tech Tips Newsletter) Now he’s rethinking that position, upgrading all of the computers and software in his facilities and encouraging other stations to do the same.

These days radio and TV stations use automation software. They input commercials, songs and programs as digital files and put them in a playlist that runs according to a schedule. Many radio stations prerecord their DJs or use satellite radio programming, so there’s often no one at a radio station overnight.

At this particular operation, when the morning crew went in at 5 a.m., they discovered they couldn’t get audio over the air and couldn’t get into the computer to fix anything. Then ransom e-mails began to arrive, demanding money to allow the station back on the air.

In total, three stations were off the air for seven hours. Posts on other industry websites show that hackers trying to get into broadcast automation systems are not uncommon. One engineer reported multiple attempts to hack into his station coming from IP addresses in Russia and China.

There are a lot of broadcast operations still running on Windows XP. Updated automation software is expensive, but in the long run probably not as expensive as the potential for losing all that ad revenue, viewers and listeners if your station goes down due to a hijacking.

Reduce Junk Mail in Outlook

If you receive a lot of junk mail that is not sent directly to you (something the spammers do often), you can easily create a rule to move it to specified folder. These instructions are from OfficeXP but any differences with other versions should be minor
1.	Start Outlook
2.	Create a folder where you want to move junk mail not sent to you.
3.	Make sure you have the Folders view (View / Folder List)
4.	Right click on the upper most section, Outlook Today
5.	Select New Folder
6.	Give it a name. For this example, it is called NotMe

7.	Go to Tools / Rules Wizard

8.	Click on the New tab
9.	Check Start from a blank rule

10.	Click on the Next button
11.	Scroll down and check where my name is not in the To box

12.	Click on the Next button
13.	Check move it to the specified folder

14.	Double click on the specified in the lower panel

15.	Highlight the folder where you want the e-mails moved
16.	Click on the OK button

17.	Click on the Next button

18.	Check except where my name is in the Cc box

19.	Click on the Next button
20.	Give your rule a name
21.	Check if you want to run this rule on existing messages
22.	Click on the Finish button

23.	Click on the OK button

24.	Now any mail not expressly sent to you will automatically be moved to the NotMe folder.

Configuring Outlook2010

Configuring Outlook2010 is fairly straightforward and not that much different than with previous version If you have a Existing PST file you want Outlook2007 to use, it requires just a bit more to do but saves time in the long-run The steps below detail both procedures.
1.	After installing Outlook, click on the Outlook icon on the desktop
2.	This will bring up the following screen. Click on Next

3.	You will then see the screen to create a new profile. The default name is Outlook but you can also change it to be the person's name

4.	Click on the Ok button
5.	If you have an Exchange account, it can often be faster to enter the information on the first screen

6.	If you have a POP account, typically it is better to Manually configure the server settings. Then click Next

7.	Select the default of Internet E-mail and click on Next

8.	Enter in all the information give by your e-mail provider

9.	If there are additional settings like requiring the Outgoing Server to have authentication or ports be changed, click on the More Settings button
10.	You can change the name

11.	If your Outgoing Server requires authentication, click on the Outgoing Server tab
12.	Check My outgoing server (STMP) requires authentication

13.	If ports need to be changed, click on the Advanced tab
14.	From here you can change the Incoming and Outgoing ports, check if SSL is required.
15.	You can also check to leave mail on the server. This would be useful if you were checking mail from two different computers or devices (like a cell phone or tablet)

16.	Click ok
17	Then click on Test Account Settings

The following section details the steps necessary to configure Outlook to use an Existing PST file or configure it to use one other than the Default
1	Start Outlook
2.	Go to Tools / Account Settings
3.	Click on the Data Files tab

4.	Click on the Add button
5.	Select the type of PST file you want to use

6.	Browse to the location of the PST file you want to use and click on OK

7.	Click on Ok again

8.	Highlight the Outlook file you want to use

9.	Click on Set as Default. Click OK at the following warning

10,	Close and Restart Outlook
11.	Go to the Go to Tools / Account Settings / Data Files tab as before
12.	Highlight the default PST file that got created

13	Click on Remove. Click Yes at the following prompt

14.	Now you will just have the one PST file that you want to use.

15.	Click on the Close button

Configuring OutlookXP and Outlook2003 for E-Mail is fairly straightforward. If you have a Existing PST file you want OutlookXP to use, it requires just a bit more to do but saves time in the long-run The steps below detail both procedures.
1.	After installing Outlook, right click on the Outlook icon on the desktop
2.	Select Properties

3.	Check whether this you want to be prompted for a profile or always load the one you are about to create
4.	Click on the Add button
5.	Give the profile any name you choose. My preference is to give it the name of the person. This makes it a lot easier to identify later on.

6.	Check Add a new e-mail account and then click on the Next button.

7.	Check the type of account you want to add. In this example we will be adding in a POP3account, which is your typical Internet e-mail account.

8.	Enter in all the information requested.

9.	Click on Test Account Settings to make sure everything is configured correctly

10.	Close the test windows
11.	Click on the More Settings button
12.	The default Mail Account name will be what was entered for the POP server.
13.	Enter in a more user friendly name

14.	Click on the OK and Next buttons
15.	If you don't have a different PST file you want to use, you can simply click on the Finishbutton

The following section details the steps necessary to configure Outlook to use an Existing PST file or configure it to use one other than the Default
1	Click on the New Outlook Data File... button
2.	Click on the Data Files... button
3.	Outlook2003 will bring up the following dialog box. Highlight the lower entry and click on the OK button

4.	This will bring up the default location for your data file.
5.	In the Save in: box, browse to the location of the PST file. This can either be on the local computer, file server, or any central location on a network.

6.	Name the file whatever you like.

6.	Click on Ok
7.	Click on Personal Folders and select the lower option. This points to the one you just created.
8.	Click on the Finish button

8.	You will be given a warning about changing the default location for your e-mail. Click on the OK button

9.	To remove the reference to the first PST file, click on the Data Files.... button

10.	Highlight the top entry and click on the Remove button. You will also notice that the other entry points to one on a file server.

11.	Click on the Close button

Warning: Although the procedure we use for this is relatively safe, one of the ways to get it done requires a rooted device. If you’re planning on rooting your device, we always recommend that you backup your data beforehand.

What is it?

Basically, this tweak will modify the Android file system that is used by Android to connect to the Internet. The file contains a TCP / IP configuration used for the interchange of data and by modifying this configuration, we can change the way our device connects to networks. With this change, depending on the device and the mobile network used, you could expect to see an increase in download and upload speeds while on Wi-Fi, 3G, and even 4G connections.

Requirements

Root Permissions: you will need this for the most reliable results. While the app in question that we can use does have a procedure that will work without root, there’s no guarantee that it will work as well the rooted method.
Sysctl.conf file : This is the file we're going to replace / copy in a system folder, which contains the connection parameters. Download it if you want to follow the manual procedure, otherwise the app will take care of everything. In the link you will find a screenshot of the path and the permissions that you must assign to it.
Internet Speed Master: Thanks to this application we can simplify the process by letting you to change the parameters. Those who do not have or do not want to get root permissions, can experience how Improve Internet Connection .

Automatic Procedure

Install the application Internet Speed Master.
Open it and allow SuperSU (or the equilavant) to give Internet Speed Master root permissions if you have them.
If you have root permissions, press the Apply Patch to apply the changes to the system automatically. If you do not have root permissions or want to try the first method less "risky", press Improve Internet Connection.

If you're rooted, you can click Apply Patch and have the app do the work for you.

Manual Procedure

Download the file sysctl.conf .
Copy the file on your device by connecting it to your PC or using the SD card, if available.
Install and open ES File Explorer (or equivalent) and make sure to allow it to have root permissions.
Now copy the file previously transferred by holding down and selecting Copy.
Enter the folder (device) "/ system / etc /" and and paste the sysctl.conf file there.
Change the permissions of the file sysctl.conf by doing a long press on it: More > Properties> Edit Premissions. Activate the permissions for Reading and Writing to the Owner and disable everything else.
Reboot the device.

Checking out the results

For a quick and dirty way of checking whether the speed increased, install the app Speedtest.netand run some tests both before and after you do the procedure.

Issues

If you experience any problems after running these procedures or find that there’s no improvement, you can cancel the procedure by pressing the Restore button from within the app. If you followed the manual procedure, delete the sysctl.conf file that you put in there.

Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for unlocked Moto G arrives

The US-based, unlocked version of the Moto G (2013) is finally getting a taste of the final version of KitKat, that being Android 4.4.4. The update, at just 21 MB, has started to roll out OTA (over-the-air). By now, all Moto G carriers models already have the update, which we reported on way back in June. It's about time though, with Android 5.0 Lollipop just around the corner.

The Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is arriving OTA to Moto G (2013) US based unlocked models.

Among the list of changes that Android 4.4.4 KitKat should deliver, the Motorola Support website lists improvements to the power profile, as well as several stability, framework and security fixes including an update to OpenSSL (remember Heartbleed?).

Moto G owners will also have the ability to pause video recording with a new pause button in the viewfinder image. The dialer also has a new layout and set of colours to match the rest of Android KitKat user interface, and lastly, you can now install the new Motorola Alert app, which is available from the Play Store, which will provide you with alerts from your contacts in an emergency (or vice versa).

Ensure that your phone is charged to 50% and that you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi connection. Tap on the notice to update notification and follow the prompts, or you can check in the settings of your phone under the ‘’About phone’’ category, then ‘’System Updates’’, ‘’Download’’ and finally ‘’Install’’. The version you will then see on your phone is 210.12.40.

Now that the Android 4.4.4 update has arrived, the next update would be Android 5.0 Lollipop, though it could take some time for this to come to the unlocked 2013 Moto G. Check out the list of all Android phones and tablets to get the Lollipop update (that we know so far).

While the original Moto G may not be at the top of everyone's mind, Motorola has still committed to getting it updated, pushing out a 4.4.4 OTA tonight to the U.S. unlocked model. The Moto G was already sitting on 4.4.3 so the update comes in at just 21MB and doesn't include anything shocking other than performance improvements — but getting an update is always a good thing.

As a matter of fact, the Moto G already picked up the update in the U.K. back in July, so the U.S. is just playing catchup at this point. If you've got an original Moto G in the U.S., now's the time to check for updates.

How to Use Your Laptop as a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Have you ever been in a situation where you have no W-Fi router, just one network cable and five people who need to use the Internet? Or maybe you have a 3G dongle that works with your laptop, but leaves your Wi-Fi-only tablet offline. Sounds familiar? It would certainly be handy to share the Internet connection amongst all users and devices without a router, right?

Or maybe this scenario will ring a bell. Many hotels offer wired Internet access for free, but charge you for Wi-Fi and/ or for using the Internet on more than one device. So should you just pay the crazy amount they ask for? Not necessarily.

You can share your laptop or desktop Internet connection via Wi-Fi to other devices, and for the most part, it's quite simple. Mac users face no trouble at all, as setting up Internet sharing in OS X is just a couple of click away, but for Windows users the process can be a little bit more laboured. The built-in options don't always cut it due to the complicated setup and reliability problems.

Internet sharing on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1
Thankfully, there are quite a few apps that let you use your machine as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you use any of these apps, you may want to check the steps onMicrosoft's site to see Windows' built-in Internet sharing and see if you have better luck than we did. We do recommend that you skip that and use a third-party app instead, since the experience is usually much better.

We tested some popular apps that let you do this - Connectify and Virtual Router Plus. The latter didn't work very well for us. Our anti-virus flagged it as a threat and during installation it tried to make us install unwanted software.

We didn't have the same issues with Connectify. It is a reliable app for turning your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you proceed, know that you will need a Windows PC with a Wi-Fi adapter (or built-in Wi-Fi) to make this work. If your computer does not have Wi-Fi, then you can buy one that connects via USB, such as this one.

Here are the steps to setup your Windows machine was a Wi-Fi hotspot:

1. Download Connectify and install it. The installation is pretty straightforward and when installation is complete, restart your computer.

2. After restarting the computer, check whether it is connected to the Internet. If it is, run the Connectify Hotspot app.

3. You'll see two tabs in the app - Settings and Clients. In the Settings tab, under "Create a..." click Wi-Fi Hotspot.

4. Under Internet to Share, you'll see a drop-down menu. Expand it and select the connection you want to share. We tested this app with a wired and a wireless connection and found that it worked perfectly with both.

5. Under that, you'll see some more options. Add a Wi-Fi password. Click Start Hotspot.

That's all you need to do. Now other devices will detect a Wi-Fi network labelled Connectify-me. Key in the password and you're good to go.

Connectify is a paid app, but it has a stripped down free version. You can create a hotspot with the free version, but the main limitation is that it automatically disconnects every 30 minutes and shows pop-ups asking you to buy the pro version. You'll have to re-enable the hotspot manually to start using it again.

The Pro version has more features and costs $25 (Rs. 1,550) for a year and $40 (Rs. 2,450) for a full licence. Apart from unlimited hotspot uptime, you get features such as custom hotspot naming, the ability to share Internet from 3G and 4G networks (for sharing USB Internet dongles), and advanced firewall controls (choose which devices can access Internet and personal files on your LAN).

Internet Sharing on OS X

Mac users have it a lot easier. Here's how to share your Mac's Internet connection.

1. Open System Preferences > Sharing > check Internet Sharing on the left.

2. On the right, expand the drop-down menu next to Share your connection from: and select the connection you want to share. You can share Internet connections from Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or even iPhone USB.

Typically, you'd want to select Ethernet, if you are using a wired Internet connection iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook Pro. If you are using an external Ethernet adapter with a MacBook Air, you'll want to select USB Ethernet or Thunderbolt Ethernet, depending upon the kind of dongle you are using (usually it's USB).

3. Just below that, there's a box next to To computers using: where you should check the box next to Wi-Fi.

4. Click the Wi-Fi Options button below the box. Pick a Network Name, Security Typeand enter the password twice in fields named Password and Verify. We strongly recommend you choose a password, instead of leaving the Security option has None. You can leave Channel as the default value unless you know what you are doing. Click OK.

5. If the connection is active, you'll see a green icon and text Internet Sharing: On under System Preferences.

That's all. You'll be able to use the Internet on other devices now by connecting to the network you specified under Network Name.

iPad Air 2 Is Thinner, Faster

Apple is launching its thinnest tablet yet, the iPad Air 2 is 1/4 of an inch thick and weighing less that a pound, the company says it is the thinnest tablet in the world. The new iPad Air 2 has an improved Retina display and will be available in gold silver and gray colors.

The camera has been upgraded to an 8 mp and includes new features like panorama, time-lapse and slo-mo video. and the display has an anti-reflective coating to prevent glare. Apple says glare could be reduced by as much as 56%.

The new iPad should also be faster, thanks to a new A8X chip, which the company says more than doubles CPU performance with a 10 -hour battery life.

The device also features the Touch ID fingerprint identification. Apple is especially proud of the continuity feature that works with OSX that allows you to start a project or movie on your Mac and pick it up again in the same place on your iPhone or iPad.

There’s also a new iPad Mini 3 available. The iPad Air 2 starts at $99 for the Wi-Fi model and run up to $829 for the 128 GB for the Wi-Fi plus cellular models. iPad Mini 3 will start at #99 and can range up to $729 for the 128 GB model with Wi-Fi & cellular.

Internet Speed Vs. LAN Speed

How does a 150 mpbs speed router increase my speed if I’m only getting a 20 mbps speed from my cable internet carrier?

These numbers actually represent what is called throughput. This is the amount of data transferred between places in a specific amount of time. In this case, Mbps = megabits per second. What you want to remember is that there are several factors in determining your actual throughput. The two big ones you want to look at are your Wireless LAN speed and your Wired Internet speed.

Wireless LAN – LAN stands for local area network. This means all the devices connected to the wireless within your home. If you are transferring between a wireless laptop and a wireless printer, you will get a potentially faster transfer rate than over your Internet connection. This is the 150 Mpbs throughput.

Wired Internet – This is the maximum speed determined by your service provider. It’s the wired connection that comes into your house and into your modem/router supplied by your service provider. This is the 20 Mpbs throughput you are asking about.

Another thing that can affect the actual throughput would be your wireless adapters. Older adapters may only support wireless g or b, but wireless n is much faster. Wireless g can cap out at around 54 Mbps, but wireless n can go up to 300 Mbps or higher and provides a greater range than the previous bands.

Also keep in mind the higher the throughput, the better connection you will have with multiple devices. You’ll have more throughput to “split” between the devices. This can also have an effect on the range of your devices’ wireless connection.

So while over the ‘Net, you may not see any higher than the 20 Mbps your provider offers, there are certainly advantages to having higher throughput if you use multiple devices over a local network.

Malicious Ads Hit 113,000 YouTube Viewers

We’ve told you before about malicious ads – fake or misleading ads that direct you to sites containing malicious code that put botnets and viruses on your PC.

The latest victim of these crooks – YouTube users. According to security experts at TrendMicro, this latest attack hit 113,000 users – 95% of them in the United States over a 30-day period.

Considering that some YouTube videos have millions of views, that’s a lot of victims to pick from. This particular malicious ad was found to be running on a music video with more than 11 million views.

The scammers try to be crafty, but not immediately directing you to the malicious site, but to another site with links to the sites with the code that can mess up your computer.

The crooks modified the information of a Polish government site to make themselves look legit and the traffic passed through a server in the Netherlands before ending up back on the server with the malicious code in the United States.

The exploit used in this attack is called Sweet Orange and it targets Internet Explorer, Flash and Java. The malware includes ransomware attacks. Ransomware locks up your computer and demands payment to release it.

Now if your security software is up-to-date and you’re running the most recent version of Internet Explorer with all the updates installed, you should be fine. There’s been a patch for this vulnerability for nearly 18 months.

Of course, always watch where you go on the Internet and if something starts to look fishy, close your browser. Check to see if anything new and unwanted is installed on your computer. If so, remove the program and run your security and malware software.

Can I Use A Hard Drive From a 32 Bit System With A 64 Bit Computer?

I have a 2.0 USB to sata/ide drive that you can read a hard drive on your computer as another drive. Can you use a 8.16, or 32 bit hard drive on a 64 bit machine or do they have to be the same?

Leone, hard drives are not 64 or 32 bit systems. Those terms only apply to operating systems. A hard drive is a piece of hardware. If you remove a hard drive from an old computer to use as an external drive, it doesn’t matter if the computer it came from has a 64 or 32 bit system.

3 Critical Windows Security Updates You Need Now!

Microsoft has three critical Windows updates available for vulnerabilities already being used by hackers. Critical issues like these are called zero-day vulnerabilities.

Among the flaws with fixes is a patch to Internet Explorer that fixes 14 vulnerabilities. The worst of them could allow an attacker to execute malicious code if you view their website. This fix is called MS14-056 and you will have to restart your computer for this update to go into effect.

Updates also address vulnerabilities in that can allow attackers to take control of your computer and one that allows malicious software to be embedded in TrueType fonts. Yep, they can get to you through your fonts, too. The TrueType vulnerability is in a kernel-mode driver. I point this out because this is a flaw that needs to be fixed at a very basic level – the kernel.

Only Microsoft has the necessary information about Windows to permanently patch this flaw. If you’re using Vista, Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 – the company is sharing the information with third-party security providers to fix the problem. It you’re still running XP, there’s no security patch being shared with third-party security providers, so there’s no way to permanently remove it from your system.

And hackers can reverse engineer the patch and use it to develop attacks against XP. So, keep that XP machine offline.

Another vulnerability addressed in these updates is Sandworm, a bug that has already attacked various government agencies and companies and a flaw that allows attackers to bypass the security measure in Microsoft Developer Tools.

There are 24 vulnerabilities addressed in all. If you have your computer set to update automatically, you should be good.

Java, Flash Security Updates Available

Adobe Flash Player is often considered to be one of the most vulnerable programs running on PCs. Attackers love to exploit any flaws they come across and that’s why it is very important to keep it up to date.

Adobe has released security updates for Adobe Flash Player for Windows, Mac & Linux to take care of vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to take control of your system.

Affected versions include Flash Player 15.0.0.167 and earlier versions, Flash Player 13.0.0.244 and earlier versions and Flash Player 11.2.202.406 and earlier versions for Linux. Several versions of Adobe AIR are also affected.

Adobe suggests the following updates:

Users of the Adobe Flash Player desktop runtime for Windows and Macintosh should update to Adobe Flash Player 15.0.0.189.
Users of the Adobe Flash Player Extended Support Release should update to Adobe Flash Player 13.0.0.250.
Users of Adobe Flash Player for Linux should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.411.
Adobe Flash Player installed with Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 10 and Internet Explorer 11 will be automatically updated to the current version.
Users of the Adobe AIR desktop runtime should update to version 15.0.0.293.
Users of the Adobe AIR SDK and AIR SDK & Compiler should update to version 15.0.0.302.
Users of Adobe AIR for Android should update to Adobe AIR 15.0.0.293.

You version of FlashPlayer may update automatically or you can visit Adobe for the latest update. Make sure you actually go to Adobe and not to a third-party site offering the updates with all sorts of hijackers attached.

Oracle is also offering a critical patch update that contains 154 security fixes for its products, including Java SE. Many of these patches affect database and business suite products. For a complete list of products, click here.

Running updates regularly is key to protecting your PC.

How to Find Lost Gmail Messages

99% of my Gmail is gone, including my folders where I was saving tech info. How do I get my Gmail message back?

Logging in to your email and finding all your mail has gone is a sinking feeling that many of have experienced over the years. However, with any luck it is not gone for good. It may just be hidden from plain sight. Here are some of the usual suspects.

1. The Trash – It may seem obvious, but the first place to look for your missing email is the Trash. Gmail will store emails in the Trash folder for 30 days, but after that, they will automatically be permanently deleted, so don’t delay if it has been a while since you have seen this mail.

Look for the Trash folder on the left hand side of your Gmail inbox, and click it.

If your emails are here select them all by clicking the checkbox above your emails
Then click the folder icon to choose a folder to move your emails to.
Finally, click Inbox to move your files back to your Gmail Inbox

2. All Mail – This one is less obvious. If your email is not in the Trash, it could be in the All Mail folder. This is where Gmail stores all your archived mail. This is mail that was not trashed, but archived using the archive button on the toolbar. However, the All Mail folder could be hidden from view. Here is how to find it.

Hover your mouse over the left hand side of your screen next to the Trash folder we just looked. You should see an option that says More.

Click the More button to reveal additional folders, including the All Mail folder.

Click All Mail to see if your emails are in this folder. If they are, you can repeat the instructions above to select the emails you want and move them to your Gmail inbox.

3. Spam – It is possible that your email may have been accidentally moved to your Junk Mail folder by you or another user. You can find your Junk Mail folder in the same way you find your All Mail folder.

4. POP/IMAP Email Clients – Have you recently set up a third-party email client like Outlook or Thunderbird to collect your Gmail for you? If so, it is possible that it may not have been set up properly and was instead set to delete the email as soon as it was grabbed by your third-party email client. To check your POP settings, see below and any third party email clients that you have set up on your computer:

Click the Gear icon in the top right hand corner and select Settings

Next click Forwarding and POP/IMAP at the top of the screen, and look to see if POP is enabled. If it is, be sure that it is NOT set to Delete Gmail’s copy.

If you use IMAP to access your Gmail, make sure that you use Google’s recommended IMAP settings.

If you can’t find your email in any of these places, there is a high chance that your account has been compromised. You should immediately go to https://www.google.com/settings/security and click the change password link to prevent any further unauthorized access to your account.
