(A telescoped aircheck removes the commercials and irrelevant content of a broadcast. This interview was broadcast Thursday, April 19, on WMBS-AM 590 Radio, Uniontown, PA, near Pittsburgh.

Last month’s unique weather and geology, which featured an earthquake and a hurricane in our area, reminded us that it’s always important to have an emergency plan for our families. It’s also important to think about protecting your vital technology assets from a natural disaster.

In this month’s CompuSchmooze column in the Jewish Community Voice of Southern New Jersey,  I offer some suggestions for protecting technology and data when Mother Nature reminds you she doesn’t like being fooled.

The Society for New Communications Research has issued a call for entries for the 6th Annual SNCR Excellence in New Communications Awards. These prestigious awards honor the work of organizations that are innovating the use of new communications tools and technologies, social media, ICT, and mobile media in business, media, and professional communications, including advertising, marketing, public relations, corporate communications, and CRM, as well as entertainment, education, politics, and social initiatives.

Entrants are asked to submit case studies detailing their initiatives and technologies. Winning case studies will be published on SNCR.org, and will be honored at the Society for New Communications Research Symposium & Awards Gala, which will be held November 3-4 at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.

Ted Mann, digital media director for Gannett newspapers in New Jersey, was the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Jewish Community Voice of Southern New Jersey in Voorhees, Camden County, on June 1, 2011. Mann discussed the digital changes and technology innovations rocking the news media industry, and its impact on traditional print newspapers. You can read Ted’s blog, TurkeyMonkey and learn more about him professionally.

Mann was introduced by Steve Lubetkin, managing partner of Lubetkin Global Communications, who is the Voice’s technology columnist.

A sad postscript to the cautionary comments in Ted’s keynote is the post on his blog July 10, announcing that he had killed Gannett’s hyperlocal effort, InJersey.com, with a detailed explanation of why it went dark.
