There were countless rumors before the actual release, lots of leaked photos were seen and the anticipation was just rather too much. The hype died the very day iPhone 5 was released and lots of iOS users were disappointed. Though statistics shows that the device sold millions in the first day, that shouldn’t be enough reason to go for it. Samsung Galaxy S3, which is seen as a close competitor, is a much better alternative. If you’re wondering if you should still go for iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S3, these points below should convince you.

1. A much bigger screen

Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a 4.8 inch screen and this makes doing certain things on mobile much more easy. With a wide screen, watching movies is much more enjoyable and everything looks so realistic. iPhone 5 comes with a tiny 4-inch screen with a resolution of 1,136×640 while Samsung Galaxy S3 has a generous 4.8-inch screen with 1,280×720 pixels resolution.

2. External storage support

iPhone limits its users to 64GB storage and Samsung Galaxy S3 has a storage of 32GB but even at that, you can expand it to 96GB by using a 64GB SD card. Expandable memory is one thing that will never come to Apple devices.

One problem you always face when you use a powerful smartphone is battery drainage. Both phones have a 8MP rear camera but an added advantage to Samsung Galaxy S3 is the from camera that’s 1.9MP while iPhone 5 comes with a 1.2MP front camera. Video calls on Samsung Galaxy S3 will be much much better with the resolution the camera has to offer.

7. A faster processor

Another disappointing factor on iPhone 5 is its new Apple A6 Dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, the speed doesn’t measure up to Samsung Galaxy’s 1.5GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 processor.

8. Problem With Apple Maps

Apple removed Google services including Youtube and Google Maps on iOS6. Google Maps was replaced with Apple Maps (or whatever they call it) but this should’ve been named iLost according to a funny commercial by Motorola. To say the least, it’s inaccurate and can really get you lost.

Comparing both these mobile devices, it’s quite obvious Samsung Galaxy S3 is a much better alternative. Maybe iPhone 5S (if there will ever be one) will measure up to Samsung Galaxy S3 but for now, The Samsung Galaxy S3 rules.

Run Java Apps On Android Devices

There are numerous people who have decided to stick permanently with their J2ME phones. This is simply because they do not want to lose their favourite Java apps. An old friend I hooked up with yesterday has a similar experience. He had to stop a particular activity because he couldn’t get the Android version of the J2ME application.

By default, Android devices cannot run Java apps(.jar or .jad). Many of you might as well be looking for a way to run your favourite Java apps on your Android phones. There are two “personally tried” methods you can apply to get this done:

NetMite

Netmite is an online service that helps you convert your .jar/.jad apps to the .apk file extension which is recognized by Android.
This is the first service I tried and it worked perfectly for me.

Follow the following instructions to enjoy Netmite:

-Visit Netmite for android’s website here

-You need to first of all download the Java app runner for Android to your device. Without this installed, no java app will run on your device even after you’ve converted it to .apk. So, Download it now. Then install it normally on your Android device.

-Get the .jar/.jad of your Java app on your computer and upload here. Or just copy the URL of your .jar/.jad file and paste it in the space provided on Netmite’s Conversion page.

-Your .jar/.jad app should now be uploaded and converted to .apk. Upon completion, your .apk extension will download.

-You can then install your converted app to your Android device normally.

Jbed 1.20 for Android

Jbed 1.20 is an Android app which allows you to install and run Java apps. This approach is easier, preferred and recommended, at least from my experience with the two. JBed 1.20 can run on Android 1.5 – 2.3 devices with each version having it’s Jbed 1.20 version. Select the download link of your Android device below to download Jbed.

Once you have downloaded and installed Jbed 1.20, all you have to do is to install any .jar/.jad file into your device.

NOTE: This app doesn’t appear as Jbed in your apps list, instead it is simply named “Java”.

*You will not be able to use the normal Android installer to install your .jar/.jad apps. This is because Android is built to install only .apk files. So, I suggest you navigate to the directory of your .jar/.jad file using any “File Browser app”, and click on it. You will be asked to “Complete Action using…”

*Select “Java” from the list of apps displayed. You will be warned that the app you are installing is untrusted. Just “Continue Anyway” by clicking on “OK”.

*To launch your newly installed app, you will have to first navigate to “Java” in your apps list, and the select the exact app you want to launch.

Conclusion
I prefer installing my J2ME apps with Jbeb 1.20 instead of the Netmite online service. I just don’t buy the idea of first uploading my .jar files and then downloading my .apk files. The process is a bit long for me. I prefer just installing my .jar files directly. Also, I have noticed that apps installed with Jbeb 1.20 perform better.

You may not enjoy 100% effeciency on all converted apps, depending on your device. One issue you may experience has to do with screen size. On my tablet some of the apps just open in the top left corner while some others supports full screen.

You don’t have to miss the experience of your old java apps (especially those that don’t have Android versions) any longer.

Android : How (and when) to clear app cache or data

Apps sometimes can misbehave. Before you go reaching for that task killer (don't do it!) here's something else to try. Above is the screen you'll see if you go to Settings>Applications>Manage appliations and tap on an app. You've got a bunch of buttons and numbers. The top buttons are pretty self-explanatory -- force stop makes an app quit. Uninstall either uninstalls an app -- or if it's permanently loaded onto the phone (like the Android Market should be), you'll have the option to uninstall updates.

But when we have a misbehaving app, first thing we'll try is to clear the cache. That wipes out temporary files that might be causing trouble. Your app's still there, as are all your settings.

Clearing data is a little more drastic, basically giving you a clean installation of the app, with all of your settings and log-ins returned to zero. It's pretty much the same as uninstalling and reinstalling, just quicker.

So if you're having trouble with an app, try clearing then cache, or go all-out and clear data and see if that doesn't do it for you.

Android Won't Download Apps (Android Market Stuck at Downloading)

Various solutions have been discovered, and these are listed below. As you can see from the responses I've had, every one of them has some chance of solving the problem. The simplest (and most convenient) solutions come first, so I recommend working through them from top to bottom. Please tell me if any of these solutions work for you - your information will be useful to the many other people experiencing this problem.

First, check your available space (Settings -> SD Card & phone storage). If space is low, solutions (d) or (i) will probably work for you. The problem may re-occur if your space runs out again though - consider investing in a better memory card!

a) Restart your phone.[17 people told me this worked]
Restart your phone by switching it off and switching it back on again (not just the screen - you need to shut it down!).

b) Make sure your phone is not on a Wi-Fi network.[20 people told me this worked]
Some Wi-Fi networks may block port 5228, used by the Android Market. If your phone is connecting to the Market via a Wi-Fi network, turn it off (Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Turn off Wi-Fi) and
your phone will then connect using APN (i.e. internet access via the mobile network). Alternatively, if you have admin access to the network, open port 5228 (UDP and TCP). Then return to the Market and restart your downloads.

c) Log into Google Talk.[21 people told me this worked]
There should be a Google Talk application already installed on your phone, which will log you in as soon as you load it up. Do this, and then go back to the Market and restart your downloads. If you can't log into Google Talk, try connecting to a wireless network (Settings -> Wireless -> Turn on Wi-Fi). If you still can't log in, the Wi-Fi network may have a firewall (see above), in which case you will need to find a less restrictive Wi-Fi network. Once logged into Google Talk, you can turn off Wi-Fi to switch back to APN connections.

d) Refresh your data syncronization settings.[148 people told me this worked]
Try disabling your application syncronization setting and then re-enabling it (Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> Background data). Uncheck the box and then recheck it. Then restart your downloads.

e) Clear your application data.[25 people told me this worked]
Try clearing up your application data and caches (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications). Ensure they are all listed (Menu -> Filter -> All), then go into each of your applications and tap "clear data" or "clear cache". There will be a lot of apps listed, but you probably won't have to clear caches for all of them - do it for as many as you can, particularly the ones you recognise. Caches may be taking up too much storage space, preventing new apps from being downloaded. After clearing caches, restart your downloads.

f) Uninstall the Market update.[48 people told me this worked]
Many users have found that the problem started after installing a Market update. Try uninstalling it (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Market). Tap "clear cache" and then "uninstall updates". Then return to the Market, sign in, and restart your downloads. (Don't worry about losing functionality - the update will reinstall, hopefully without the problem returning).

g) Uninstall the Download Manager update.[6 people told me this worked]
Many users have found that the problem started after installing a Download Manager update. Try uninstalling it (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Download Manager). Tap "clear data" and then "uninstall updates" (my phone doesn't have this option - and lists the version as version 7. Please let me know if your phone is different). Then return to the Market and restart your downloads.

h) Disable Data Saver.[3 people told me this worked]
Find the Data Saver (Settings -> Battery & Data Saver) and uncheck "Enable Data Saver". Then return to the Market and restart your downloads.

i) Upgrade your phone software.[2 people told me this worked]
Connect your phone to a computer and upgrade your phone's software. You may need to install a PC companion to do so. Then disconnect and restart your downloads.

j) Change your google account password.[4 people told me this worked]
Change your password using a computer. Your phone will ask for the new password when you reload the Market. Then restart your downloads.

k) Switch your googlemail account to a gmail account.[8 people told me this worked]
Log into your googlemail account on a computer. Click on "Settings", then "Accounts and Import" and find the option to switch your address from "@googlemail.com" to "@gmail.com". Then use this account for the Market instead. You may need to reset your phone to link it to the new account format (Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset). Annoyingly, if you sign up for an account through your phone, you will be forced to create a googlemail account. But reports indicate that the Market has trouble communicating with googlemail accounts. Switching your account to a gmail account, or using a gmail account you already own, may solve the problem.

l) Uninstall some apps.[2 people told me this worked]
Apps may stop downloading if your phone runs out of space. Try uninstalling some apps and then restart your downloads.

m) Restore your phone to a previous restore point.[2 people told me this worked]
If your phone has software which creates restore points (such as "nandroid"), try restoring your phone to a past state wherein the Market did work. Then try downloading again from the Market.

n) Reset your phone.[29 people told me this worked]
Try resetting your phone (Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset). Then try the Market again with your existing Google Account. If this is an undesirable solution, consider the other solutions at the bottom of this page first.

o) Create another Google Account.[13 people told me this worked]
Try creating a new account. You may need to reset your phone to do this (see above). You can either create the account on a computer, or create the account on your phone (both methods have been reported to work). This solution worked for me.

Some other solutions that have worked for only one person:
- Correct the date on the device, if it's set to the wrong date. "Market will not work if date is too far off."
- Correct the timezone on the device, if it's set to the wrong timezone.
- Cancel the automatic updates and manually update instead.
- Download Archtools (from Appslib) and "install Market version 3.3.3(ish)".
- "Clear the downloads log from the browser menu"

Where's My Water by Disney is astonishingly simple and incredibly addictive game for Android that works on devices of all shapes and sizes. To put things in perspective, I have never ever played a game in my Android so passionately. Where's My Water is a lot fun. Period.
