This happened after someone made some changes to their group membership and locked themselves out of everything. You can't be a member of EVERYTHING in the list.

Rule of thumb here is DENY always overrules ALLOW.

He couldn't log in locally anymore, or remotely for that matter.
"The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively"
Turns out this person had been playing and added him to a group that was denied permission to log in locally.

This just may be the case in your event. If so then check the group membership for such a person. Or maybe Group Policies.

Run
secpol.msc

Navigate to “Local Policies”, then select “User Rights Assignment”.
Find “Allow logon through Terminal Services”. Check and make sure that “Administrators” and “Remote Desktop Users” are in the list. If they aren’t, click “Add User or Group”, and add the user.

No matter how you got to this point is irrelevant but what is, is how to get rid of this cracker.

When you open Internet Explorer 7 you either get a blank page or just won't go away no matter how many times you save your settings.
Maybe you see an error that says:

Thank God for programmers and people smarter than myself to figure this annoyance out.

Outlook error, freezing

We could not check the message you are trying to open for viruses because the virus check engine reported an error. To open the unchecked message check OK.

I fixed this by simply disabling all the add-ins and is working fine now.

This was occuring in Outlook 2003.

Resetting Word to Factory Default Settings

Close Word and Outlook.

This will not work if Word is running. This is because Word saves configuration information as it exits. If you make changes and then exit, you overwrite any resetting you did.

You should make sure you rename the Normal.dot file to a different name, and you should remove any files from the Startup folder.

back up the Registry first, and then you can accomplish the following steps:

Choose the Run option from the Start menu.

In the Open box enter regedit & click ok.
Find the path according to the version of Word you are using.

If you are using Word 97, select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/8.0/Word key.

If you are using Word 2000, select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/9.0/Word key.

If you are using Word 2002, select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/10.0/Word key.

If you are using Word 2003, select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/11.0/Word key.

If you are using Word 2007, select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word key.

Press the Delete key.

Click on Yes.

Close the Registry Editor.

Restart Word. Word has been reset to default settings.

I have only had this happen on a Vista machine so far.

The Send command is unavailable.
The E-mail command is missing.

Backup your registry & close all programs

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem
Locate the following registry values. Typically, these values are listed in the Windows Messaging Subsystem key.

If any of these registry values are missing, follow these steps to add the values:

Click the command that you want, and then click Add to add the command to the Quick Access toolbar. For example, click Send for Review, and then click Add to add the Send for Review command to the toolbar.

Norton Antivirus Removal

Escape - Esc is used to back out of situations. When you find yourself in a place where you don't want to be, try the Esc key. In PowerPoint this key will stop a running slide show. The keyboard combination Ctrl + Esc will open the Start menu.

F1 - While working in an application, depressing this key will bring up the applications help menu. If there is no open application F1 will open Windows Help.

F2 - Choose this key to rename a selected item. Alt + Ctrl + F2 to open a new document in MS Word Ctrl + F2 to open print preview in MS Word (this is a toggle, tap the keys again to return to the edit page)

F3 - Depressing this key will display the Find: All Files dialog box. 2 - Shift + F3 will change case in MS Word. Continue to press F3 (with the Shift key depressed) to toggle through all choices.

F4 - Holding down the Alt key while depressing F4 closes the current active window. If there is no active window this opens the Shut Down dialog box. 2 - Repeat an action with F4. For example, if your last action was to format a word as Bold, you can repeat the procedure by highlighting another word and depressing F4. This continues to work until your next action. F5 - Select this key to refresh the contents of a dialog box, such as the Save As or Open dialog
boxes, or in a window such as a Windows Explorer window. 2 - Refresh a browser window; IE refreshes immediately, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari all ask for confirmation before refreshing 3 - Open the Find and Replace dialog box in MS Word 4 - F5 + Ctrl + Shift to insert a bookmark in MS Word 5 - Use this key to start a slide show in MS PowerPoint

F6 - F6 + Ctrl to move to a previous window if you have multiple documents open in MS Word 2 - F6 + Alt to move to a previous window if you have multiple documents open in MS Word

F7 - Perform Spell and Grammar check in MS Word 2 - F7 + Shift when a word is selected to access the thesaurus in MS Word

F10 - Activates Menu Bar options. Use right and left arrows to select menus and down arrows to display pull down menus. This is especially useful on the newer versions of IE because the menu bar is not displayed by default. 2 - F10 + Shift - Depressing this key combination will display the selected item's shortcut window. This is the menu that is displayed by right-clicking.

F11 - In Internet Explorer this key will allow you to toggle back and forth between full screen view (all toolbars compressed into one thin line) and normal view 2 - In Excel this key will make a chart using data that you have highlighted 3 - F11 + Shift - in Excel this keyboard combination will add worksheets to the workbook. Each time you tap F11 a new worksheet is added.

F12 - Open a new document in MS Word 2 - F12 + Ctrl + Shift to print in MS Word 3 - F12 + Shift to Save in MS Word 4 - F12 to open the Save As dialog box in MS Word

Print Screen - Don't look at your printer after pressing this key. This sends a copy of whatever is on the screen to the clipboard. One common use of this action is to paste the clipboard into Paint to copy a portion of an image for use in another application. That was produced by copying a small portion of the desktop image and pasting into a web page developer. If you wish to copy only the active window, hold down the Alt key, then tap on the Print Screen key. It will copy only that window that is active, not the whole desktop. (Thanks to Bruce Ellis with Dallas ISD for pointing this out)

* (Asterisk) - Ctrl + Shift + * to select the current region around an active cell in MS Excel. This can be quite useful in creating charts.

Hyphen (dash) - Ctrl + - (Hyphen) to bring up the Delete dialog box in MS Excel [ - Ctrl + [ to decrease font size of highlighted text one point at a time (MS Word and MS PowerPoint) ] - Ctrl + ] to increase font size of highlighted text one point at a time (MS Word and MS PowerPoint)

P - Ctrl + P to print in many applications 2 - Ctrl + P to bring up the pen if you are showing a PowerPoint show

E - E to erase whatever you drew using the pen during a PowerPoint show

A - Ctrl + A to select all in many applications 2 - Ctrl + A to replace the pen with the arrow pointer if you are in a PowerPoint show

B - Ctrl + B to make selected text Bold 2 - B to make the screen Black if you are showing a
PowerPoint show [this does not work in edit mode, just in show]

W - Ctrl + W to close a window 2 - W to make the screen White if you are showing a PowerPoint show [this does not work in edit mode, just in show]

Z - Ctrl + Z to undo (to Zap an error)

X - Ctrl + X to cut selected text or images

Q - Ctrl + Q to quit (or Exit) the active application

C - Ctrl + C to copy selected text or images

V - Ctrl + V to paste text or images that have been cut or copied

S - Ctrl + S to save a document

D - Ctrl + D to make a favorite in Internet Explorer

Tab - This key can be used to move forward through options in a dialog box. 2 - Ctrl + Shift + Tab can be used to move backward through the options. 3 - Ctrl + Tab allows movement from one open window to the next in an application with more than one open window. 4 - Alt + Tab displays a list of open application windows. Keeping Alt depressed and selecting Tab cycles through the list. Releasing selects the highlighted application window.

Caps Lock - An obvious function, but some things that are not so obvious need to be said. This key should be used with caution, if at all. A document, even a headline of a document, produced in all caps is hard for the eye to scan. If you are producing documents, or slide shows, for the purpose of communicating with some audience, you should avoid anything that makes that communication less clear. All caps is difficult for voice recognition software to interpret. All caps in Email is widely understood to be shouting or yelling at someone. Furthermore, new users should not be taught to use the caps lock key in place of depressing the Shift key to produce capital letters.

Shift - The obvious use of this key is to allow selection of capital letters when depressing the alphabet characters, or selecting the characters above the keys on the row just below the F keys. 2 - Depressing the Shift key while inserting a CD-ROM will bypass auto play. 3 - Use the keyboard combination Shift + Delete to permanently delete a selected item, not simply moving it to the Recycle Bin. 4 - Shift + arrow key(s) to extend the area of selected data in MS Excel 5 - Adding the Shift key to most keyboard shortcuts will perform the reverse action. For example: Spacebar scrolls down in IE but Shift + Spacebar scrolls up, in MS Excel depressing the Enter key moves to the cell below and Shift + Enter moves to the cell above, likewise in MS Excel depressing the Tab key moves to the cell to the right and Shift + Tab moves to the cell to the left.

This can be caused by a corrupted setup information (.INF) file.
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps and delete the C:\Windows\INF\INFCache.1 file:
1. Double-click the My Computer icon from the desktop or Start menu.
2. Click Tools on the Menu bar, and then click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. Under Hidden Files And Folders click the button next to ´Show hidden files and folders´.
5. Click to clear the check boxes next to Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating system files if necessary.
6. Double-click the My Computer icon from the desktop or Start menu.
7. Double-click the hard drive icon that Windows is installed in.
8. Double-click the inf folder icon.
9. Scroll up the list to find the file INFCACHE.1, then right-click it and choose Delete.10. Restart your system

NOTE: After you deleted the file, please be sure to return step 1-5 of these settings to their previous condition.

Test your device and removed and put it back in a few times. I found that the infcache.1 would corrupt if not removed properly so I created a batch file to delete it to make it easier.

del INFCACHE.1

Enable the Hidden, Administrator Account in Windows Vista

Open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator"

Enable the hidden administrator account
net user administrator /active:yes

Disable the hidden administrator account
net user administrator /active:no

Adminstrator account has no password so you will have to go to user accounts in control panel and set on up if you want to.

USB Device Not Recognized or Malfunction

Recently I came across a computer that wouldn't recognize any of the USB drives and did some research and found this helpful.

Make sure you have all your latest motherboard drivers and/or latest BIOS.

I found that, in XP, after a USB port isn't used for a while the built in driver sets the OHCI controller to suspend. Sometimes when you plug a device back in, it can fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 so make sure you have the latest XP service packs as well.

If updates don't fix your problem then try this:

Run regedt32.exe and navigate to; HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.

Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.

Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software.

Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;

USB peripheral devices (printers,etc.)
HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.
USB Root Hub(s)
USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers) Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.

Finally, boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub.

If none of this works, try a fresh install of Windows XP. If that doesn't cure you, get used to it or by another PC.

QuickBooks Install Failed error 1304 & 25015

I recently had issues with a QuickBooks reinstall after some computer corruption and couldn't get it to reinstall for the life of me.

Exhausting all resources and finally fixing it I am going to let you know what I did for fix it.

I was getting error 1304 (Error 1304: "Error writing to file [file name]. Verify that you have access to that directory.") first and was saying my cd drive was bad but I wasn't installing from cd as it was the exe file downloaded from their site.

I found after numerous hours and trial and error that the .net was the culprit and I tried to uninstalled and reinstall and then got:
Error 25015 failed to install assembly system error 0x80131107 failed to install because of system error 0x80131107

I could not get it to reinstall. I had to rename the C:\windows\assembly folder and clean out all the .net files from the c:\windows\microsoft.net folder. I then reinstalled the .net 2.0 successfully this time, rebooted and then installed my QuickBooks successfully.

Conficker Worm, April 1st, or April Fools

April first, really now?

Conficker Worm to destroy the world, right after the Rapture and the Y2K. Usually this is something that happens then they talk. They have first hand knowledge of this worm and yet they can't stop it? I know they are not that dumb.

As always I tell everyone, backup and don't open anything you don't recognized and keep your AV up-to-date. Offsite is the best next to you sitting down and doing it the old fashioned way and burning to disk or use to external device. I like to set it and forget it and have a copy far away from me.

I use Mozy backup, they give you 2gb free and you can purchase more. Out of all the backup solutions I have used over the years this is the easiest and cleanest program I have ever had the pleasure of using. The recover is awesome as well. Give it a whirl.

Error message when you try to start Outlook 2003: "MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or

1. Start Windows Explorer.

2. Locate and then open the following folder on your computer:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Msmapi\1033

3. Right-click the MSMapi32.dll file, and then click Rename.

Note The file (Msmapi32.dll) that you are renaming differs from the file
(Mapi32.dll) that is mentioned in the error message.

4. Type Msmapi32.old, and then press ENTER to rename the file.

5. Start Outlook 2003.

Outlook folders are stored in a PST file. They are not real folders and cannot be protected with the software program Password Protect Folders.

To set a password on your Outlook folders, you do not need any software programs. Just follow these steps:

If the Folder List is not displayed in your Outlook, click View > Navigation Pane > Normal.
Right-click Personal Folder (the highest folder in your folder tree) and select Properties for Personal Folders from the right-click menu.
On the General tab, click on the Advanced button.
Click on the Change Password button.
Type your password into the New Password and Verify Password boxes.
Make sure the Save This Password in Your Password List check box is cleared and click OK.

That is it. You will be prompted for a password next time you start Outlook. However, please note that Outlook folders are not the only folders you should set a password on.

To safeguard your folders containing important private and work information from unwanted access, install Password Protect Folders on your computer. Password Protect Folders is fully integrated with Windows Explorer. That is you can use the right-click menu in Windows Explorer to protect and unprotect your folders.
