Instructions

Things You'll Need:

A Windows based computer
A general understanding of the programs on your system

Step 1
Go to Start-Run and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes). If you have Windows Vista, just type "msconfig" into the Start Search bar.
Step 2

Windows System Configuartion Utility - Startup Section
Click the Startup tab at the top. Here you will see a list of all the applications on your computer. The ones that are checked are set to run at Startup. Check the services you want to run at Startup, and uncheck those that you do not. If you have less services set to run at Startup, your computer will boot faster.
Step 3
Once you have finished click Apply and restart your computer.

Have you ever noticed in Windows vista you can delete your favorite Recycle Bin ;)
yes seems crazy but Windows vista has a bug ,
Microsoft created Windows vista as most secure,powerfull Operating system software but still have few bugs like this, really strange. This may be possible that Microsoft has given Deletion of recycle bin as one of the feature !! we cant predicate there facts , God knows what Bill gates think.
So have you deleted your Recycle bin from your Desktop of your Vista ?
Here is the Simple Answer how to get it back,
1. Right click on desktop,
2. got to 'personalize', then in the left column click 'change desktop icons'.

3.Afterwards, click on the 'recycle bin empty' icon and change it with the icon
that shows the recycle bin full…and do the same for the 'recycle bin full'
icon.
4.Click apply. Now when the recycle bin is full it will show empty and
when empty it will show full.
5.Go back and change them to the normal icons as they should be and it will solve the problem.

i think this problem is not actual problem, i think its one of the feature provided by Microsoft to organize desktop icons.

Once again another trick have been found for NTC. You can call it whatever tips, tricks, tweaks, HACK or loophole since this feature has not been officially launched yet. The system I am talking about is Voice mail system for GSM Pre-paid users of NT. This will allow you to send receive voice message to specified phone (the receiver and sender both must have activated voice mail system in order to exchange voice messages).
And the thing which makes it special is that it's FREE, totally free. NTC doesn't charge any fees for sending and receiving voice message. This feature may come handy when you don't have any balance to call or SMS.
To ACTIVATE VOICE MAIL SERVICE you'll have to follow the instructions below
.

Dial the code in bold letters in your phone, *21*011614# (This will send a service command to service provider and a message pops out with, Call Diverted or some thing similar to this. Never mind as you've dialed the number any message will be OK :) )
Now you'll see a call divert icon in your normal stand by screen, the icon resembles the curved or turning arrow.
Now use any other cell phone or PSTN landline phone to ring the phone which you are working on. (I mean call the phone where you want to activate your voice command by different phone.)
Wait until you get instructions about the call divert and then the welcome voice about the Voice mail service.
Then you can cancel the call.(Please don't skip this step even it sounds nothing.)
OK now get back to the phone where you have activated call divert option. Again in the stand by screen dial #21# . This will disable the call divert option and the call divert logo will disappear from your screen. Not every phone model shows call diver logo.

It is not a trick or a advertisement of a product. We all think about it. Yes, the question is the same. Can we increase the connection speed of our ADSL line?
We know that TCP/IP is packet based, each time a packet is sent, it must be acknowledged via an acknowledgment packet. This slows down the system. To keep the sender from having to wait for every packet to be acknowledged before sending another one, you can increase the window size (TcpWindowSize) value on the receiver end. Then, the sender can send packets until that value is reached before the receiver needs to send an acknowledgment. To tweak the TCP/IP parameters to increase the
window size, you need to manually update the registry:

Start regedit.exe.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.
From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value.
Enter a name of TcpWindowSize, and press Enter.
Double-click the new value, change the Base value to decimal, and enter a value of 32767. Click OK.
Close regedit.
Reboot the machine.

In step 5, you can actually specify a higher value (up to 256000). However, on slow networks, this larger window size means that more data will need to be retransmitted.

The first time we experienced the ADSL connection from Nepal Telecom, they give the same username and password to all of their visitors. And changing the NTC ADSL password is not that easy stuff, one has to go thru a lot of steps in Telecom’s site. Create a new a/c into their online customer center (which rarely worked for us, the page was never opened in fact), fill up all requirements (most of which are so confusing ones) and others to complete the steps.

So, comshelper Team suggest you to change your ADSL password as soon as you feel like you’re unsafe or just for a fun.

The other problem might be with the Router which connects the two networks ie the NTC’s server and Your home computer network. Ensure that you are safe with your Wi-Fi connectivity. Encrypt it or allow certain MAC addresses or devices which you want to. (More on this on later articles with video)

Is your Wi-Fi unsecured? The Homegroup or Workgroup in Windows can bring you a lot of jeopardy if your not password safe. Change or ensure them to be @#$%*.

Another one is with your landline or PSTN telephone number. Always register to NTC ADSL broadband internet service with the number that is least know to others, in case if you have more than one landline numbers. You’ll know that you’ll not repent on doing this later.

Note : I recommend making a copy of you "Boot.ini" first, just in case you do something wrong and your window is not booting, restart and when your pc is in post(the black screen) press F8 and boot in safe mode, and replace the "Boot.ini" with your backup of "Boot.ini" and it should get back to its former state.

All of us are accustomed to seeing the Windows XP logo at system startupbut how about getting a custom message at first before the logo appears?

Heres how to do it. Its easy and simple.

Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load? This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]:

1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE
[You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon]

2. Click Properties
3. Add ' -nohome' [with a space before the dash] after the endquotes in the Target field.
4. Click OK
Fire up IE from your modified shortcut, and be amazed by how fast you are able to use IE!

Open registry editor by going to Start then >> Run and entering >> regedit.

Once in registry, navigate to key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings. Right click @ windows right > New > DWORD.

Type MaxConnectionsPerServer > You can set value (the more higher the no, the more good speed u get, e;g : 99). [99 in hexa so 153 in binary]

Create another DWORD >type MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. Then put a high value as mentioned above.

Restart I.E and you are done.

When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth, this is obvious. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that tcp/ip really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although WinXP and win2000 has a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below:

FIX IE 6 SLOWDOWNS AND HANGS.

1. Open a command prompt window on the desktop (Start/Run/command).
2. Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager, i.e - Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Processes/End Process for each).
3. Use the following command exactly from your command prompt window to delete the corrupt file:
C:\>del "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"
4. Restart Windows Explorer with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Applications/New Task/Browse/C:\Windows\explorer.exe[or your path]) or Shutdown/Restart the computer from Task Manager.

SPEED UP WEB BROWSING.

Iv'e personally found a dramatic increase in web browsing after clearing the Windows XP DNS cache. To clear it type the following in a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns.

ALLOW MORE THAN 2 SIMULTANEOUS DOWNLOADS ON IEXPLORER 6.
This is to increase the the number of max downloads to 10.
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value , and then add the following registry values:

IPV6 INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS XP.

This protocol is distined to replace the Internet Protocal Version 4 used by Internet Explorer it uses hexadecimal ip addresses instead of decimal example (decimal ip 62.98.231.67) (hexadecimal IP 2001:6b8:0:400::70c)
To install To install the IPv6 Protocol for Windows XP:
Log on to the computer running Windows XP with a user account that has local administrator privileges. Open a command prompt. From the Windows XP desktop, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. At the command prompt, type: ipv6 install

Here's an easier way to get to index.dat file as addresse in another tweak submitted here.
1. click on Internet Explorer
2. go to to your root dir (usually C:)
3. open Documents and Settings folder
4. open "your username folder"
5. open UserData
6. **close IE if you have it open**
rename index.dat to index.old
logoff and log back on (don't need to restart) open up IE and go to a web page or site that always seemed to load slowly. It should load a lot more quickly now. NOTE. Always rename or backup .dat or other system files before deleting.

Saving Web Pages with Internet Explorer 6

Occasionally, you may want to save an entire Web page on your computer (text, hyperlinks, graphics, and all). To save the Web page that currently appears in Internet Explorer, choose File-->Save As to open the Save Web Page dialog box shown in the following figure. Select the folder in which you want the page saved and then click the Save button.
After saving a Web page on your hard drive, you can open it in Internet Explorer and view the contents even when you're not connected to the Internet. If your motive for saving the Web page, however, is to be able to view the content when you're not connected to the Internet, you're better off saving the page as a Favorite marked for offline viewing. That way, you can decide whether you want to view other pages linked to the one you're saving and you can have Internet Explorer check the site for updated content.
You can also e-mail a Web page or a link to the page to a colleague or friend. To send the current Web page in a new e-mail message, click File-->Send-->Page by E-mail on the Explorer menu bar and then fill out the new e-mail. To send a link to the page instead, click File-->Send-->Link by E-Mail. To create a desktop shortcut to the Web page, click File-->Send-->Shortcut to Desktop.

This tip is designed for increased BROADBAND speed in Windows XP while using standard Network Interface cards (NIC) that are connected to ADSL modems, or when using any directly-connected USB ADSL modem.

To speed up the Internet connection speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the NIC or the USB modem.

This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Step #1 - Identify the IRQ used by the NIC/USB modem

1. Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.

2. Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.

3. Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel® PRO/100+ Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21).

In case of USB modems you will first need to find the right USB device used by your modem. Follow these steps:

1. Open the Device Manager tool by running DEVMGMT.MSC from the Run command (or by right-clicking My Computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager button).

2. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.

3. Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Note that you might need to do so for all listed USB Root hubs (if there are more than one) in order to find the right one.

4. In the Power tab, look for your USB ADSL modem.

5. In the Resources tab look for the assigned IRQ (in this case - IRQ21).

6. This is the IRQ we're looking for.

Note: IRQs and modem names might vary...

Step #2 - Modify the system.ini file

1. Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

2. Expand the system.ini file window.

3. Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

4. Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type IRQX=4096 where X is the designated IRQ number we found in step #1, in my case it's IRQ21.

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

5. Click on the File menu, then choose Save.

6. Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

How can I speed up my Windows XP PC?

One of the stranger aspects of computers is that they do indeed suffer from old age, as you are noticing. Oddly enough, the longer you use a computer - particularly a Windows PC in my experience - the slower it ends up running. It could be a plot forcing you to always buy newer and faster systems, but more likely it's just that as you use the system, you put increasing levels of demand on the hardware with different helper apps, more running in the background, animated desktops, flashing icons, custom cursors, RSS readers and stock tickers, and even programs helpfully checking for updates at random intervals. It all adds up.
One strategy for improving things is rather draconian: back up your computer files, reformat your hard disk, then reinstall the OS from scratch and the key applications you use. Total time lost? Probably a couple of days by the time you get everything restored, but it's really a pretty good annual task for PC users, in my experience.

There are also a variety of specific steps you can take to try and isolate the resource hogs on your system and give them the proverbial boot too, and Bob Rankin has generously granted me permission to reproduce his amusing recipe for accomplishing just that.
Here's Bob's recipe for Making Windows XP Run Faster:
I have this theory that sludge builds up inside a computer over time, much like an automobile engine. After a while, it doesn't start right up like when it was new, it stalls unexpectedly, and performance is sluggish on the (information) highway. Here's my special recipe to clean that icky goo out of your computer's pipes, so Windows will start quicker, run more reliably, and go faster on the info-superhighway.

If only it was so easy! But actually, it's not so hard to take action on those items I listed above. Here's the scoop on how to implement each step.
Apply Windows Updates
If you run Windows and you use the Internet, you simply MUST stay up to date with the system patches that come out in response to the privacy and security exploits that are discovered every week. Failure to do so is an open invitation to hackers and crackers to invade your privacy and enslave your computer in a spam spewing network. To get the latest fixes and configure your system for automatic updates, open Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Windows Update.
Clean out Viruses and Malware
Are you running a good anti-virus program, with automatic updates? Have you scanned your system for spyware, adware and other unwanted pests? If not, see my articles How can I avoid computer viruses? and Spy, Counter-Spy for details on how to protect yourself from those risks. Viruses and malware can slow down your system a LOT, because they use your resources to generate popup ads, send spam, and often interfere with the operation of good programs.
Remove Unnecessary Software
You may have a bunch of software packages on your hard drive that are no longer needed, or they were gratuitously installed when you downloaded some other package. Toolbars, file-sharing programs, free email enhancers, online shopping "companions" and download managers are notorious for this practice. These uninvited guests can put a big drag on your startup time, cause web pages to load slowly, and generally bog down your computer. Go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Software to see what packages are installed. Remove the ones you know you don't need, and do a web search to learn about the ones you're not sure about.
Scrub That Hard Disk
Both Windows and application programs tend to leave temporary files lying around on your hard drive, taking up space needlessly. A hard drive that is close to being full can cause Windows to act strangely, and will slow down or interfere with efficient disk access and virtual memory operations. And if you surf the web a lot, your temporary internet files folder can become quite large, causing Internet Explorer to slow down or malfunction. Cleaning up unneeded files, scanning for disk errors and defragmenting the hard drive can help to restore some zip to your system.
First, open My Computer, right-click on the C: Drive icon, select Properties, then click on Disk Cleanup. (Optional: Select the More Options tab to find and remove even more unwanted files.) To run a defrag, open My Computer, right-click on the C: Drive icon, select Properties, then Tools. Click the Check Now button to scan your disk for errors. When the scan is complete, click the Defragment Now button to run the defrag, which reorganizes your hard disk so Windows can find and access files more efficiently. (It's highly recommended that you close all running programs and disable your screen saver before running a defrag. Otherwise, updates to your files may trigger defrag to restart endlessly.)
Okay, Now Take a Breath...
We're more than half-way done with the process of cleaning the junk out of your computer. The rest of the steps may seem a little more geeky, and you can skip any or all of them if you don't feel comfortable digging a little deeper into the workings of the Windows operating system. But there is definitely bang for the buck here. Some of peskiest Windows performance problems can be solved by giving attention to these areas.
Slim Your Startup Selections
There are certain programs that Windows will start every time you boot up your system, and during the startup phase, they're all jockeying for a slice of your CPU. Extra or unwanted items in the startup list will defintely increase your startup time, perhaps by several minutes. To manage the list of startup programs, click on Start / Run, then type MSCONFIG. Press Enter, then select the Startup tab. If you see items in the list you know you don't need to run at startup time, UNcheck the box(es) next to them and press Apply. Some common examples are things related to AOL, RealPlayer, Napster, instant messengers, and video managers. If you're not sure about an item, no big deal. You can turn it off, restart your PC, and see if everything seems to work. If not, you can always go back and re-enable an item in the Startup list. This helpful list may help you decide what to keep or drop.
Clean Your Registry
The REGCLEAN utility from Microsoft, though no longer officially supported for Windows XP, cleans your system registry of unnecessary entries that are created when you install or remove programs on your computer. Sometimes an "orphaned" registry entry can confuse Windows during startup and cause a delay. And in general, slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster. Note: This program is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, but many users report that it works fine on Windows XP systems. You can also try RegSeeker which is a highly rated registry cleaner.
RAM and Virtual Memory Settings
When you run out of physical (RAM) memory, Windows will use a check of your hard disk to create virtual memory. This is a nice feature, because it allows application programs to access huge amounts of memory. The only problem with virtual memory is that it's a lot slower than real RAM. So installing extra RAM on the system board is a good idea because it's pretty cheap and easy to pop in. Find out how much your system will accommodate and install the maximum amount.
Extra RAM will probably do more to boost your overall system performance than anything else!
But getting back to Virtual Memory, it's wise to let Windows manage the amount, unless you are a Wizard, with a capital W. Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced, then press the Settings button under Performance. Click Advanced again, then press the Change button under Virtual Memory. If System managed size is selected, you're all set. If you want to fiddle with the Custom Size options, be my guest!
Turn Off Extraneous System Services
We're heading into uber-geek territory here, so be forewarned. Windows doesn't know exactly how you're going to use your computer, so it starts a whole bunch of system services that manage network connections, database access, error reporting, remote access and other nerdy-sounding things. You may not need all these services, and disabling some of them can reduce your startup time and system overhead. But choosing which ones to nuke is a bit daunting, unless you are an expert on Windows operating system internals. Here's my advice... look at these explanations and advice then disable only the ones that you're sure about. If you encounter a problem, you can always go back and turn a service back on.

Optimize your computer for peak performance

The following tips can help improve your computer's performance. These examples use Microsoft Windows XP. Some of the screens may differ from version to version, but overall you'll find these tips work for all versions of Windows, including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

By the way, in no way can you blow up your computer or files with any of these procedures. These tasks use utilities provided within the Windows operating systems to aid you in achieving the best system performance. This article does not address tinkering with the registry files.

Clean up disk errors
Run once a week

Whenever a program crashes, or you experience some power outage, your computer may create errors on your computer's hard disk. Over time, the errors can slow your computer. Luckily, the Windows operating system includes a Disk Check program to check and clean any errors on your computer and keep it running smoothly.
To run Disk Check:

1.In your Start menu, click My Computer.
2.In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (for most of us this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.
3 In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab. In the Error-Checking section, press the Check Now… button. A Check Disk dialog box displays, as shown below.

Access Check Disk to check for errors on your computer.
4.In the Check Disk dialog box, check all the check boxes. Click Start.
5.You will see a message box that says you can schedule the disk check to start the next time you restart your computer. Click Yes. The next time you restart your computer, it will automatically run through a disk check before displaying your login screen. After the disk check finishes, Windows will automatically bring you to your login screen.

Note: Check Disk can take more than an hour to check and clean errors on your computer.

Remove temporary files
Run once a week

Your computer can pick up and store temporary files when you're looking at Web pages and even when you're working on files in programs, such as Microsoft Word. Over time, these files will slow your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup screen to rid your computer of these deadbeat files.
To run Disk Cleanup:

1In your Start menu, click My Computer.
2.In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (for most of us this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.
3.In the Properties dialog box, click Disk Cleanup.

Use Disk Cleanup to help clear unused files from your computer.
4.Disk Cleanup will calculate how much space you can free up on your hard drive. After its scan, the Disk Cleanup dialog box reports a list of files you can remove from your computer, as pictured below. This scan can take a while depending on how many files you have lying around on your computer.

5.After the scan is complete, in the Disk Cleanup dialog box, click View Files to see what Disk Cleanup will throw out once you give it the go ahead. You can check and uncheck boxes to define what you wish to keep or discard. When you're ready, click OK.

6.You can also select the More Options tab within the Disk Cleanup screen to look for software programs you don't use much anymore. You then have the choice to remove these unused programs.

Rearrange your data
Run once a month

Don't be shocked, but your computer can get sloppy. Your computer often breaks files side by side to increase the speed of access and retrieval. However, as files are updated, your computer saves these updates on the largest space available on the hard drive, often found far away from the other adjacent sectors of the file.

The result: a fragmented file. Fragmented files cause slower performance. This is because your computer must now search for all of the file's parts. In other words, your computer knows where all the pieces are, but putting them back together, and in the correct order when you need them, can slow your computer down.

Windows includes a Disk Defragmenter program to piece all your files back together again (if only Humpty-Dumpty had been so lucky) and make them quicker to open.
To run the Disk Defragmenter:

1.In your Start menu, click My Computer.
2.In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (for most of us this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.
3.In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab, and then in the Defragmentation section, click Defragment Now….
4.In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, select the Volume (most likely your Local Disk C:) at the top of the screen, and then click Analyze.
5.After analyzing your computer, the Disk Defragmenter displays a message stating whether you should defragment your computer. Press Defragment to clean up your computer if necessary. The Disk Defragmenter will reorganize files by placing together and organizing them by program and size, as shown in Figure 5.

Make Internet Explorer run faster

The Web is a sparkling achievement of modern society. It's everywhere—from the home to the classroom. We use it to communicate, to work, to play—even to waste time when there's nothing else to do.

Yet there's nothing more frustrating than having this technical marvel at our fingertips 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, only to watch our computers access the Internet at a crawling pace. Thankfully, Microsoft Internet Explorer provides some useful options for quicker Web surfing. Let's look at these options now.

Reduce the size of your Web page history

Internet Explorer stores visited Web pages to your computer, organizing them within a page history by day. While it's useful to keep a couple days of Web history within your computer, there's no need to store more than a week's worth. Any more than that and you're collecting Web pages that will slow down your computer's performance.
To reduce your Web page history:

1.In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.In the Internet Options dialog box, in the History section, find the Days to keep pages in history: box. Type "1" in this box, as pictured in the image below. Click OK.

Don't save encrypted Web pages

Encrypted Web pages ask for usernames and passwords. These pages scramble information to prevent the reading of this sensitive information. You can define Internet Explorer to not save these types of pages. You'll free up space by saving fewer files to your computer, as well as keeping secure information off your computer.
To not save encrypted Web pages:

1.In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3.In the Settings section, scroll down to the Security section. Check the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" option, as shown in the figure below. Click OK.

Automate Microsoft Update
Configure once

Microsoft works constantly to release updates to Windows and other Microsoft products, including Office. At Microsoft Update, you can find and install all these updates—not just the critical ones. Often, these updates will improve your computer's performance.

You can make life easier by automating Microsoft Update so your computer downloads and installs all the updates without you having to worry about them.
To automate Microsoft Update:

1.In your Start menu, click Control Panel.
2.In the Automatic Updates dialog box, check the Automatic (Recommended) check box. You can define the time of day when your computer checks for updates. If the computer finds any updates, it will download and install them automatically for you.
3.Click OK.

Firefox browsers in particular, are finicky when it comes to throwing JavaScript scripting errors and this
peculiar behavior should not be attributed to Firefox meeting standards which other browsers do not meet. Unfortunately, most web authors do not realize the extent to which their web pages can throw scripting errors under different circumstances and many surfers do not realize or properly understand that a web page they are viewing, may not be working properly or as the page author intended.

However, there is one group of web developers who are not working blind and who do understand the extent of this problem, and these are the developers who use the JavaScript 'window.onerror' event to trap and record scripting errors on their web pages. This Web page you are viewing utilizes such a system and if you view the source Markup of the page, you will see near the top of the page, the JavaScript routine that traps details of scripting errors before transmitting this information back to the web server. These scripting error records are appended to a scripting error log file on the server which we then use to repair and try to eliminate scripting errors from all the pages on our Website.

A JavaScript error event occurs when the users browser encounters a JavaScript script syntax error or a JavaScript script runtime error. A JavaScript error event does not occur for ordinary browsers errors like for example, 'file not found'.

Understanding The Scale ...
Prior to our introducing error trapping to record scripting errors on our web pages we thought that our JavaScript scripting was mature and error free. After all, we were experienced programmers and had tested all our routines on a number of web browsers running on our Windows 2000 workstations.

At the time we introduced the error trapping system (March, 2006) Web-Wise-Wizard was serving between 1,500 to 2,500 content pages a day to human visitors and you can imagine our annoyance when we discovered that the daily scripting error log files were in excess of 100KB in size. It soon became obvious that our well behaved JavaScript scripts that worked well on a Windows PC running Internet Explorer, could often throw scripting errors when for example, the page was loaded into a Firefox browser running on a different platform. At this point I feel that we should make it clear that we are not picking on one particular browser because all browsers can throw scripting errors from time to time, depending on the environment they are running in and also depending on the quality of the scripting on the web page in question.

It is our intention to provide a seperate tutorial showing you how you can introduce JavaScript error trapping on your own web pages. The tutorial will include various client-side options and for those of you that have a CGI capability on your web sites, we will also provide a working Perl script that will record errors in a script errors log file on your server.

Reducing The Errors ...
These unwelcome revelations brought to light by our scripting error log forced a rethink on how we tested the scripting on our web pages. After all, we used the W3c validators to validate the HTML Markup and the CSS styles on our web pages but we had no way of checking or testing the scripting on our web pages or in our JavaScript library files. The problem lay in the fact that there was no central authority like W3c who could set standards for scripting on a web page or provide facilities to validate scripting on web pages. The situation is made even worse by the fact that we are no longer able to specify which version of JavaScript we were coding to when creating our JavaScript scripts.

An eventual solution presented itself when we discovered a tool called JavaScript Lint and this tool made a pretty good job of error checking all our JavaScript scripts for common mistakes without actually running the scripts or loading the web pages. This service is completely free of charge (they do not even require you to register or provide an email address) and I recommend that every JavaScript scripter should test their own web pages or library files using this type of service. We provide the following link to their online service which you can try out and use immediately.

Online JavaScript Error Checker
The effect of our error checking the scripts on our web pages and in our JavaScript library files was immediate. Once we started using the error checking service we found errors that we did not know about. The number of scripting errors recorded in our scripting error log fell overnight, by as much as 60%/70%. For this reason we strongly recommend that all web authors error check their JavaScript scripts in this manner, even if they do not incorporate an error trapping system for the scripts on their web pages or in their JavaScript library files.

At Web-Wise-Wizard, we are starting the process of developing an online JavaScript error checking service of our own. It will be based on the JavaScript Lint checker which is open source code but it will have a user interface similar to the W3c validators which many web authors will already be familiar with.

'Error Loading Script' Errors ...
Reducing the number of errors and potential errors in our web page and library scripts had the effect of dramatically reducing the size of our daily scripting error log files. There were still a considerable number of scripting errors each day and with the benefit of hindsight these errors can be split into two categories; those errors that were within our control to fix and those errors that were not within our control to fix.

If we start by discussing those remaining errors that were within our control to fix. Every day we would examine the scripting error log file and having determined the details of each error we would load the offending web page or JavaScript library file into our HTML editor and then correct or rework the scripting to gradually eliminate this category of error. These errors were fairly easy to fix because the error log file provided information about the URL, line number, error description, users browser, etc., and we found that each individual offending page or library file could be the cause of a large number of the remaining errors in the scripting errors log file.

If we then move on to discuss those remaining errors that we eventually found were not within our control to fix. This group of errors can be easily identified by the following information contained in the error record and you can compare this information with the scripting error log file record displayed below (the one with the double black border around it).

1.Firefox/Chrome/Mozilla Browser (and presumably other Gecko based browsers too).
2.All error events are recorded as happening on Line 1.
3.The error message is typically 'Error Loading Script'.
4.File not loaded is a legitimate JavaScript library file.
I was bugged by these errors and spent a lot of time on my own Website trying to find the cause of the problem. I could not even recreate the error so I started haunting the blogs to find an answer. I came across many guesses and suggestions as to the cause of the problem and with the benefit of hindsight the only suggestion that I would give any sort of credence to is to make sure that all the JavaScript scripting is error free. At a minimum, this means that you must error check and correct the scripting on your web pages and JavaScript library files.

The Amazing Error Log Entry ...
Then in late November, 2008 came the breakthrough I had been hoping for. Late one night I was examining a daily scripting errors log file and came across the following entry for a Google, New Zealand Webpage. I loaded the URL into a browser and noted that the fourth search result down the page pointed to a page on the Web-Wise-Wizard site.

Immediately following the Google error record was another error record, this time displaying the more familiar 'Error Loading Script' error and this record was legitimate for the Web-Wise-Wizard site. Both records were from the same IP address and had an identical time stamp and if you are wondering how this could happen it is because the Web-Wise-Wizard error trapping routine is designed to handle multiple errors, one immediately after the other in an split second.

It is also worth noting that I checked if the 'clk is not defined' error could be legitimate for the Google search page and found that they did use (or misuse) the variable 'clk'. I then tested the Google search page source Markup in the JavaScript error checker and found a variety of warnings and errors, not including the 'clk is not defined' error.

This article offers solutions to errors you may receive in Firefox or Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey when attempting to connect to some or all websites. Error messages may include "The document contains no data" and "The connection was refused when attempting to contact..." or an error page may tell you that the server could not be found or that the connection has timed out.

If you can't get any website to load immediately after updating your browser, it is almost certainly your firewall or other security software blocking the connection.

As with anything else, the problem may go away once you reboot your system.
Make sure you are connected to the Internet. To make Firefox/Mozilla Suite autoconnect when it starts, see this article.
Make sure that File -> Work Offline is not checked.

If your Mozilla application can't connect but other programs such as Internet Explorer can...

[edit]Connection settings
Make sure your connection settings are correct. If you have Internet Explorer and it works, compare Internet Explorer's connection settings (e.g., Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections: LAN) to those of Firefox (Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network / Connection -> Settings) or Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies).

If your connection settings are not correct but any changes you try to make are not saved after restarting your Mozilla application, make sure you don't have a utility program such as "Hide IP Platinum" that modifies your connection settings. Even if the utility is no longer installed, the user.js file may still contain the modified settings [1]. To resolve this problem, open the profile folder and look for a user.js file. If found, either remove the user.js file or edit it to remove any "proxy" settings it may contain as outlined here, then reset the connection settings.

[edit]Firewalls
Make sure that your firewall program is configured to allow internet access to Firefox/Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey. The Firewalls article includes configuration information on some of the more popular software firewalls.

Most firewalls will ask you whether to allow a new program to connect to the internet, so it is important to always allow access for new or updated Mozilla applications. Even if you see permission in the firewall list of permitted programs, it could be for the previous program version, as firewalls require permission to allow an updated program to access the internet [2].

Some firewalls can be rather tricky to configure, or even to disable or uninstall. In some cases they may continue running silently after supposedly being uninstalled or disabled. They may also have bugs that prevent the Internet access list from being updated correctly. The "EnumProcess" tool for Windows, available here, enumerates all running processes and identifies firewall processes. It also identifies some of the other security programs (but not necessarily all) that are known to cause problems.

Firewalls have many ways of blocking Internet access. Some firewalls and other security software manage all aspects of Internet connections and Web traffic, including domain-name service (DNS), access to secure Web sites, and browser access to your computer. Kaspersky software can block domain-name service (DNS) for some programs but not others. [3] You must allow DNS access for normal Web browsing.[4]

[edit]Other security programs
Besides personal firewalls, other security programs, including Norton or Symantec Antivirus, [5] [6] can block internet access or cause other connection issues, especially after the browser is updated. Older versions of Panda Anti-virus can cause connection problems. (Information on this is no longer available on the Pandasoft Web site.)

Note that some antivirus packages include web scanning features, such as Avast! "Web Shield" and Kaspersky "Web Anti-Virus", that process all HTTP traffic, which may cause intermittent timeouts and failed page loads (see below, under Websites randomly do not load) .

[edit]IPv6
By default, Firefox/Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey will use IPv6 ("Internet Protocol version 6") if it is available. However, the user's local network or Internet environment may not be equipped to handle IPv6. (Read this discussion for an example.) To disable IPv6, change the preference network.dns.disableIPv6 from "false" to true . Here are the steps:

1.Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
2.Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
3.Right-click -> Toggle.
4.Restart your Mozilla application and try again.
If this doesn't work, re-enable IPv6 by resetting the preference to "false".

For help with network and Internet connections read this Microsoft article: "How to troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity with Windows XP". There is also a Windows 2000 version of the article. Much of the article is also applicable to other operating systems, with some variations.

[edit]Router
Most routers can be configured with rather complex Internet access restrictions. For example, specific Websites can be blocked, and specific computers can be blocked at certain times of the day. Access to HTTP sites or HTTPS (secure) sites can be blocked. Access to certain services such as domain-name resolution (which is required for normal browsing) can also be blocked.

In combination, the rules could also appear to be erratic. For example, if access were determined by IP address, the rules might appear to change when IP addresses change.

For help with router configuration, contact your system administrator or refer to your router's documentation. If possible, see if you can connect without hooking up to the router.

[edit]Viewing system logs
System event logs may contain information on important events such as service failures, and application updates and failures. For an example of an Internet service interruption, read this. To view the Windows Event Viewer, Start > Run > eventvwr.

[edit]DNS
If your domain name system server (DNS server) becomes overloaded, you may be unable to view some or all websites. Your DNS server translates web addresses (URLs) that you enter in your browser, into IP addresses that are used on the Internet. If you can open a website by entering the IP address into the Location Bar but not the URL (for example, if http://64.233.167.147 works but http://www.google.com doesn't) you may have a DNS problem.

You can check the speed of your DNS server by downloading the "wdnslookup" utility for Windows, available here. OS-X, Linux, and UNIX users can use program "nslookup", which is part of the operating system. Remember that both local DNS servers and your own computer cache the results, so a lookup may be much slower on the first attempt. For accurate results you should use the "Clear Cache" button in the wdnslookup utility before resolving the host name you enter. This will clear the DNS cache in your computer, but not the server cache. See this forum post for additional information.

As a first step toward fixing the problem, you should contact your ISP. You can also use an alternative service such as OpenDNS (discussed here), or TreeWalk. Other ways to find a more reliable service are discussed here. In some cases replacing your DNS may result in a dramatic, general improvement in Internet speed.[7] As a last resort, it may help to increase the DNS query timeout for the operating system, although this will not result in any improvement in speed. A related DNS server issue that can result in failure of repeated attempts to open certain websites is that Windows 2000 and XP cache unsuccessful DNS lookup attempts. This means that you may not be able to view a particular website until the cached result expires. By default, the expiration time is 5 minutes. As a workaround, you can flush the DNS cache (For Windows XP, "Start -> Run -> ipconfig /flushdns") then try loading the site again. If you want, you can permanently disable negative caching by editing the registry, as shown here. The registry entry is officially documented here (Windows 2000) and here (Windows XP).

If programs other than Firefox/Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey are also having problems connecting, the problem may be with your Internet Service Provider. Contact them.

[edit]Norton Internet Security
The popup blocker in the Addon Pack for Norton Internet Security can cause an interruption in the Symantec Network Proxy service, thereby interrupting your Internet connection.[8]

[edit]Spyware and other malware
It is possible that Spyware or other malware (malicious software) is causing connection problems. Your antivirus and security software may not detect the malware so you should install and run another anti-malware application or visit a forum that specializes in detecting and removing malicious software from your computer. Some recommended applications and forums are listed here.

[edit]Error loading some websites
If Firefox or Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey can connect to some websites, but not others:

If you receive an error message from a website, the error message may be cached. Attempts to reload the site may yield only the cached error message. To force a reload from the Internet, hold down the key and press the Reload button. [9]
Clear the browser cache:
Firefox 3: "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network / Offline Storage -> Clear Now"
Firefox 2: "Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network / Cache -> Clear Now"
Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey: "Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache -> Clear Cache"
Message: "firefox can't find the file at", even though the file actually exists. Since the message comes up in a pop-up there is no chance to retry with Ctrl+F5 (Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) to reload bypassing cache , solution: clear cache as described immediately above.
Delete any stored cookies for the problem site [10] and also make sure that cookies from the website are not being blocked.
Temporarily turn off ad-blocking. Extensions and Internet security software that block advertising or other unwanted content can cause problems loading webpage content; you may see an error message, The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. [11] [12] (Note that some ad-blocking software add entries to the hosts file that can also cause this error. [13]) You may be able to determine that part of the site has been loaded by selecting "View > Page Source" from the menu.
A hosts file has the ability to redirect Internet requests. Review your hosts file to see if it contains any entries other than 127.0.0.1 localhost .
If the website is a secure site such as a bank, Paypal, eBay, or any site that begins with "https:", see Error loading secure sites.

The page is not redirecting properly
You may be infected with spyware or other malware that can cause search engines to fail, redirect you to unwanted websites, or prevent certain websites from loading. [14] Scan your system with something other than your normal security software or visit a forum specializing in malware removal (recommendations are listed here).
If you enabled network.http.pipelining (a "tweak" designed to improve page loading time), disable it in about:config by typing "pipelining" in the filter, right-clicking all entries, and choosing "Reset". (Also remove the associated entry in the user.js file, if it exists.)
If repeated attempts fail to open a website, Windows may have cached an unsuccessful DNS lookup attempt. This means that you may not be able to view a particular website until the cached result expires. As a workaround, you can flush the DNS cache (On Windows XP: "Start -> Run -> ipconfig /flushdns") then try loading the site again. See this discussion and this example.
If only web pages with IP-addresses beginning with one particular number won't load, then there may well be a problem with the subnetmask in the router. Check by sending a ping. Pings to all addresses beginning with this number will get lost, while others don't. Define the subnetmask more precisely. This has solved elusive problems more than once. An example of what has actually worked: IP-address: 85.x.x.x. Subnetmask that didn't work: 255.0.0.0. Subnetmask in the router that has solved the problem: 255.255.255.248.
The website may have blocked your IP address.
The Outpost Pro Firewall can sometimes interfere with loading certain sites. [15],[16]
The website may only allow Internet Explorer users. You can work around this problem by installing a user agent spoofer, such as the User Agent Switcher extension, to make the website think you are using a different browser.
Make sure you've entered the correct address.
Try loading the same website from another computer or browser; if it still doesn't load, the problem is likely with the website.
[edit]Websites randomly do not load
If Firefox or Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey randomly cannot connect to websites:

The site may be down or experiencing difficulties. Try loading the site from another computer or browser to see if this is the case.
Intermittent timeouts and failed page loads can be caused by web scanners bundled with certain anti-virus packages that process all HTTP traffic, such as Kaspersky "Web Anti-Virus" and Avast! "Web Shield". (Avast users have reported the error, Connection Interrupted. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. [17] [18]) In such cases,
In the Kaspersky "Web Anti-Virus" component, you can uncheck the "Scan HTTP traffic" option. [19]
In the Avast! "Web Shield" component, you can disable the "scan all files" web protection option and enable scanning only for downloadable executable files in web traffic. [20] [21]
If you are using the Comodo firewall, it can cause a conflict with your antivirus scanner and interfere with file downloads. Try updating Comodo to the latest version. See this forum thread for details.
If you enabled network.http.pipelining (a "tweak" designed to improve page loading time), disable it in about:config by typing "pipelining" in the filter and right-clicking all entries and choosing Reset. (If you set this preference by editing the "user.js" file, remove this edit.)
You may have problems with your domain name service (DNS).
Sometimes when you first try to use the Internet, your computer may take some time, perhaps up to a minute, to establish a connection. In this case, whichever application is first to use the Internet may experience temporary difficulty, but once a connection is established, all programs should work correctly.
Try disabling IPv6 (see above).
Problematic extensions can cause problems loading web pages (see the linked article for specifics). Try updating all extensions to the latest version first, then disable your extensions or try Safe Mode. Examples of problematic extensions:
The Skype Extension for Firefox may cause pages to continually reload or stop loading [22] [23]
The DownThemAll extension can cause random pages or all pages to stop loading [24] (Note that DownThemAll 1.0 changes certain "network.http" preferences that must be reset, even if you disable or uninstall the extension.)
