Buy a new IBM server or renew your maintenance?

As your mid-range servers get older and maintenance renewal dates loom closer, you are faced with a decision:

Should you renew the maintenance or should you replace or consolidate your servers?

Our customers often think that IBM midrange servers are expensive, but IBM have done a good job of giving you much more bang for your buck as each new family of servers is released.

Every scenario is different of course, but we find it is quite common that the price of a new Power System server is very comparable to paying three years of hardware and software maintenance on your existing IBM iSeries or pSeries server, particularly if your existing server is three or more years old.

However as you look further at the overall picture, buying new equipment becomes more and more attractive – even more so if you have a few servers you can consolidate through partitioning.

Benefits of a new system

First of all, when you buy a new IBM Power System, it comes bundled with three years of hardware warranty and it is very cost effective to include three years of software maintenance with the server purchase.

As time goes on you get much more processor performance (CPW or rPerf) for any given software tier, so often customers find they can significantly increase performance AND move into a lower software tier (or at least stay in the same software tier). This of course translates directly to keeping a lid on your licensing costs.

Also as your hardware ages, your business risk increases as a disruptive hardware failure is more likely. Support costs also rise over time for both hardware and software.

If you leave it too long to replace your server, you’ll also find your compatibility between your operating system and applications can be an issue. In addition to being unable to take advantage of the benefits of new application releases, the time, effort and cost of migration goes up as well.

Then there’s your internal customers (your users) complaining about response times…

Computer Merchants would like to thank all those customers who recently joined us for lunch at the fabulous Nobu restaurant at Southbank, Melbourne and the equally fabulous restaurant at Kings Street Wharf, Sydney, to learn about IBM Tivoli End Point Manager.

For those of you who wanted to come, but could not take the time, sorry – you missed a fabulous lunch!

Combining a brief product presentation, a lively Q & A session with fantastic food and drink proved to be a
winning combination for all, if the smiles all round at the end of the day were any indication. So much so that
we may need to consider more events.

It has also been considered a very efficient use of our customer’s time – to effectively be able to learn
something new during a lunch break – although not everyone appears to have the same amount of time
allocated to their lunch breaks. The lunch end time was flexible and rumour has it that there were those who
clearly needed to know more, much, much more and were prepared to spend many hours, apparently
getting down to the real nitty, gritty of the product.

Refurbished Hardware: Save Time, Money And Keep Your Options Open

From the past few newsletter articles, you would be familiar with Computer Merchants and our ever growing business offerings including hosted solutions, thanks to our brand new premises completed in June.

Our offerings in terms of new hardware, software and solutions portfolio continues to grow in line with the business needs of today. You may or may not be aware that refurbished infrastructure is still widely purchased by many businesses nationwide. Here are just a few points where you can find benefit in going with refurbished:

Save money

Refurbished is a way to save money. The best analogy to use here is to compare to a new car. Once it leaves the floor, the showroom or the yard, it now has a decreased value due to it now having a previous owner. Who has not bought a used car before? And what are the leading points to sway a person in buying a used car over new? It may have a couple more kilometres on the clock, maybe even a tiny scratch from a trolley, but the features and performance are at a more swallowable price than stretching the budget for new. Perhaps the job can just be done by something a year or two older?

Save time

If I’m going to compare to vehicles, let’s compare this: typically do you expect to wait longer for the keys to be in your hand for a second hand car or for a new one to come from plant? Does that mean that new cars are not in stock? No, but maybe it can take two to three weeks or even months for the one you’d like. Use refurbished to your advantage. We carry a range of parts in our warehouse and utilise parts from other sources to build each server or solution to your required spec. Parts in stock can often be delivered within just a couple of days from order.

Keep your options open

You keep your options open with refurbished hardware. It might be that you have a server sitting quietly in the corner that’s only required every now and again. If it’s not under hardware support we can:

arrange a maintenance contract for you or
provide replacement parts that are no longer available new.

Another example is an Intel system – small or large – that after running for a little while just needs additional CPUs or a memory upgrade. Due to time, these may not be available to purchase new anymore. Pressure on the budget to make this server(s) last until the next refresh may be prevalent. Or a push for budget to be brought forward and more budget provided next time round, so that a purchase of a system fully configured is purchased to save the second and third year performance heartache of not being able to maximise the configuration because the parts are no longer orderable new. Your options are practically unlimited due to our access of in country and overseas stock of vendors.

Keep uniformity

We understand there are circumstances that require similar or identical hardware in your environment. This requirement can sometimes be for a number of years. It could be a test and development system where the system has to be the same or very alike. In that situation the new expense may be tough to have approved and, in a “do more with less” driven economic state, the premium price of a new system to perform this task eats away at the budget. A refurbished system for your Disaster Recovery (DR), can provide the same result and gives you the opportunity to match your configuration and performance and software license group at a possibly more acceptable price point.

Host Your iSeries Disaster Recovery Solution With Us

A quick note to let you know that you can host your iSeries disaster recovery (DR) system at our premises.

Success Story

Recently a customer purchased a high availability solution from us for their IBM iSeries environment. This involved Maxava HA software licenses, installation and setup of the Maxava HA software and associated ongoing maintenance.

IBM iSeries 810

As part of the solution, the customer purchased their DR server from us. In this case, due to a requirement for an older OS release, they purchased a used iSeries model 810 along with maintenance. This server is being hosted in the data centre at our new purpose-built premises. The server is power protected by UPS and our generator.

The customer also purchased our iSeries monitoring service for both their production and disaster recovery servers. For this service, their servers are configured to provide alerts to their designated e-mail addresses, including SMS providers if required.

Our technical specialists also receive these alerts. The alerts include:

hardware and OS software errors,
completion of overnight backups,
disk capacity and CPU utilisation exceeding thresholds,
loss of communication between production and disaster recovery servers,
application subsystems inactive and
Maxava HA messages.

IBM Power7 Updates and Improvements – Fourth Quarter 2011

IBM have witnessed a very impressive year so far with regard to the midrange POWER product line.

Market share for IBM POWER in the Unix environment was up 4.3% since the introduction of Power 7 – in a period showing the largest shift of customer spending in Unix history. To date, IBM have published 3,900+ successful migrations to POWER technology, most coming from HP/UX and Oracle/Sun along with some X86 consolidations. Power 7 has been massively successful and in middle of its life cycle, there have been some further announcements made.

New models have been announced. 710 – 740 ranges have been refreshed as well as the 770 and 780 at the higher end. Memory capacity has been doubled and at the top end more cores are available and higher speed processors.

The 770 and 780 range

Finance Industry System i Migration In Under 5 Hours

Migrating your System i can be a very risky operation, especially if your business is running 24/7. However, you can minimise the risks with the right planning and expertise.

Here at Computer Merchants, our iSeries specialist team perform system migrations all the time. We have proven methodologies to suit all sorts of situations to minimise the risk, and make the transition as smooth as possible.

System i migration success story

We have recently performed a migration for one of our customers in the finance industry. It was important for them to have their machine available to service their clients 24/7. We were given an outage window of five hours to complete the migration. Usually doing a cutover using save restore will take an average of twelve hours.

By using Maxava HA software, our engineers knew we could cutover within the outage window of five hours. We were able to replicate the databases so that both machines were in sync, and then tested the data to see that it was accurate to the last transaction. We then did a couple of dry runs to test the cutover process which proved to be successful.

The final go live was at midnight on a Saturday night. To ensure a smooth cutover we were going to perform all the steps that were documented in the practice runs. In less than two hours the systems were completely backed up and were available to be used by the customers once again. The business was very happy with the time that it took to complete the migration. They are now successfully running on their brand new Power7 hardware and reaping the rewards and benefits.
